The large green cover outside the vent building is the original shaft they dug out to start the tunnel boring. Check out the video "Hidden Secrets Of The Mersey Tunnel | What's Underneath?" at 01:42 he goes down the steps of that shaft and you see the cover. Great video mate would defo like to see more of this. I've worked on and off in Liverpool for years and I absolutely love the place. So much to look at and the locals are such lovely people. Feels like home to me 👍
Hi Kev. Just watched your Mersey Tunnel video. Great work and very enjoyable. A shame that our heritage is left to decay and so much could easily be be done to improve with a bit of thought. Clearing clutter can’t cost too much! What a difference could be made with a little thought. Just hope it promotes people to realise what we’ve got hidden in plain sight. Great community video. Keep up the good work and keep the channel strong. YNWA ROGE!
Typical of Liverpool Council, if it doesn't involve the Beatles, not interested.....the entrance to the tunnel and the walls and surrounding stone work need a good jet washing, the rubbish needs picking up regularly and that area needs transforming into a little chilling out area...but no, that would be to easy for the clowns 🤡🤡🤡 at the City Council.
LOL - don't get me started about the damned Beatles. I lost count of the number of times I rang up Roger Phillips imploring Radio Merseyside to stop mentioning the band every ten minutes. "And on today's show we speak to Nora Holdsworth who once sat at the same desk as John Lennon in school!"
Yes, in 50’s and 60’s it was a common experience to see them washing the walls down. I remember the tickets issued on paying at the booths (and stories reported about the fiddling that went on!) and for regular travellers a big pile of them built up in the car like a pack of cards.
Gosh you wouldnt see the toll booth driving past just see the rubbish. The ground around the statues should be tended to . never noticed the old lamp posts either areas to proud of They should care more goes to show what you can see if you look cant believe they left in such a state is a beautiful city . Great video speaks volumes.
The green metal lid you asked about i think is the original bore hole for the queensway tunnel i belive the original machine they used is still down as said was too much trouble to get back out there was ment to be a tram line underneath the road
The Mersey tunnel is an histroic site that should be honoured for what it is. At the time of its opening it was the longest road tunnel in the world and referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. Even its ventilation tower close to the Liver Building is an architectural masterpiece (unlike the monstrosity on the dock road for the Kingsway (new) tunnel. As Liverpool has been established as a tourist destination, what you say about the state of the stuff around the tunnel entrance: statues, which I have never even noticed, 30's lights etc. should be properly maintained and kept tidy. This is especially important with the tunnel being so close to St George's Hall, the World museum and the Walker art Gallery. Incidently, the electics feeding the lights are a disgrace and surely don't meet modern safety codes. Anyway, the video is an eye opener and whoever is responsible for the upkeep of the tunnel in the council needs to have a serious look at your video and then do something about it.
Thanks for making this. Very interesting! I knew a little of the history of the tunnels but I didn't know about the statues. It's a shame the area hasn't been made nicer. It could attract tourists. This is Liverpool's history, and it's just been left ignored. Shame!
Good shout Kev. Those old presumably oil lamps at the entrance to the Birkenhead tunnel would look amazing if they were lit. We should cherish these relics whilst we can. I’d love to see it all gleaming like new. I’d even lend a hand picking up the rubbish and scrubbing the walls to bring them back to life. C’mon Liverpool Council. This wouldn’t cost a lot and would make you look like you care about people’s opinions of our great city
It looks wildly different without the flyover. I think Queensway should have been closed a long time ago and Kingsway expanded to take all the traffic. Queensway is dangerous because there's no median between the opposing traffic and incredibly scary when a bus swings over the centre line into your lane. The big circle thing is an original borehole for the tunnel to be dug. They lowered all the equipment and men down that hole.
@@Kevcupo 4 wide rush hour traffic in that tunnel has to be one of the most frightening experiences a driver can have. Once you've done that tunnel at rush hour you should be good for parachuting and bungee without a single concern.

Sadly Kevin bureaucrats don't care about intrinsic value and preservation of history, only practical purpose. They only get conscience when legally obligated to do so. All you have to look at is see how sterile the city under their purview has become. Church street to Lord street used to have flower beds and palm trees, the junction by the Adelphi like a botanic display. And all manner of beautification. Now not so much, unless undertook by the businesses or facilities management. The dulling of modern architecture and sterile civil design I suggest is purposeful - reducing observational stimulus and promoting unstimulated conformity. But that's just my take.
On a positive, as is shown by the one at the Pier Head, at least they've been preserved to some extent. They could have been barbaric and scrapped them like many other artefacts we once had. The odd thing regarding the Cones and signage, they could easily put most of that secreted inside the booth itself.

But where does it say what it is ?
When I moved to Liverpool, if you look across you see Travelodge, that’s why I stopped with a cat and dog and I used to come out at night and always looked at them statue and St George’s Park at nine. It looks amazing not nice 😊👍
George Harrison bought a tunnel booth and put it in his garden at Frier Park
Do liverpool fans boo by that statue 😂
