Replace a Lamp Socket

- I show the steps to replace a lamp socket. When replacing a lamp socket make sure to connect the hot wire to the brass screw terminal and the neutral wire to the silver screw terminal. The hot wire will have smooth insulation, and the neutral wire will have ribbed insulation.

Thank you so much for this. I had the socket of a favorite lamp break and had put off trying to repair it for years. It had an older type socket where you need to screw a ring on the top to hold down the shade. I had to get the parts from Amazon because the local Home Depot does not carry that type of socket kit. I followed your video step by step and had it done in minutes. Thank you!

I needed to get the old harp holder off in order to use a new harp. it was so old that it wasn't as easy as in the video, but I worked it out. I never would have tackled this project if I hadn't seen this video. I watched several other videos, but I thought that yours was the best. The most nerve wracking part was reconnecting the wires because on this old lamp the wires were the same in looks and feel, but I did it! Thank you so much!

Exactly what I needed to know for replacing an old wire with inline rocker switch that burnt out, with new one. Mainly taking that socket apart.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I was able to easily rewire a set of really beautiful lamps I got at Goodwill. The only thing I ran into is that the original sockets were hardwired. I just cut the old socket off, then used a wire cutter to remove about a quarter inch of the plastic covering the wires and proceeded from there.

Great video. I removed the tiny set screw and your supposed to unscrew and replace socket. I can't get it unscrewed. Any suggestions?

Hi Fixit - question, I can't tell which is hot or neutral because the two wires are exactly the same, there is no ribbed wire, they both look smooth.
In the broken socket I had, the two wires were connected not by any brass or silver screws - they were each inserted into two separate holes in the old socket, so no differentiation to reference when I tried to replace the socket and rewire the two wires into the new socket.
Also this is a 4 year old lamp - Please help. Is the polarity in any lamp significant? Will the lamp even work if it is not connected - "polarized" right? I also dont have a wire stripper yet, so I haven't begun the hard work. 😰 I just took everything apart and bought a new socket.
Hi, email me at fixitpodcast@gmail.com. I can walk you through how to test the wires with a multimeter, or you can just replace the lamp cord with a new polarized cord. A correctly polarized cord is safe, if it's not wired correctly it can be a shock hazard.
What if I have a white and brown wire? Which is hot and which is neutral?
