This could have been a beautiful image. If Patrick Hutchinson and his friends hadn't gone public to explain that they only saved the white guy because they thought he was about to be beaten to death which, in turn, would have created a massive backlash against black people, then this would truly have been a mind blowing gesture that would have gone down in history. It could have helped to calm the whole thing down. Instead, by revealing in the media that they were only concerned with what the consequences of his murder would be, it has become seen more as an act of self preservation on their part rather than an act of universal kindness towards a fellow human being. They should have just let the image speak for itself, even though (as it turns out) it wouldn't have been telling the whole truth, but still.
