      Yeah but Lakers -Celtics is considered a rivalry and the Celtics have dominated them and the NBA for the most part. It's about how many times you meet on the big stage that makes a rivalry.

    • @Utuber1265
      @Utuber1265 Před 7 lety +14

      The word "rivalry" does not automatically mean its 50/50. I get that the connotation may mean that in everyday parlance, but it literally just means competition amongst regular competitors, which after meeting for 21 times, Maria and Serena are.

    • @YaboyG2TM
      @YaboyG2TM Před 7 lety

      Veego von DOOM- Reviews! Not a good comparison as the celtics and lakers rivalry has been around for almost 50 years. If you rewinded a few years ago the lakers and celtics battled all the time.

      Shane C, Sharapova is "open"ly lying! Sharapova arrogantly pretends she "knew" Serena was crying about HER (Sharapova's) conceited self after their '04 Wimbledon final, when the FACT is Serena was weeping about her beloved SISTER, Yetunde's DEATH! Serena was STILL tearful about Yetunde in her VICTORY speech after BEATING Sharapova in the '07 Australian Open final! So Sharapova KNEW that Serena'd been crying about her sister in '04 and NOT her. Sharapova's just EVIL.

      I don't think there should be equal pay in tennis for men & women. The men play best of 5 sets in grandslams and women play best of 3 sets in grandslams. Unless the women play best of 5 sets they should be pay paid less as its so much harder to play best of 5 sets tennis.

People described her as pretty yet she was called the N-word and horribly mistreated to the point the mother spoke out about it and was ready to pull her out of professional tennis. But the daughter opted to fight on. IF YOU'RE BLACK NO MATTER HOW ATTRACTIVE YOU STILL HAVE TO FIGHT THE RACISM. Period.

I do think as Tiger Woods did for golf. another high class sport ( Don' t tell Tiger he is black) The Williams sisters did help pave the way for tennis for black athletes. . OK so did author Ashe did years earlyer, . If this is true that Race does play into it as far as marketing it is sad but being what race you are is random and don't think Maria should take the brunt of that. For her Tennis is Tennis

    Comments being made here good or bad reflect or identify the fans or enemies of Maria Sharapova. There are always two sides to a story, whether we all believe it or not. A big figure like Maria can pose many disadvantages to tennis fans, especially being white & beautiful easily the envy of so many, but I feel the advantages outweighs it. Here, she is being interviewed candidly about her life & rise to stardom. I find her very articulate, gave long sensible answers & coupled by the good interview of Sway & Company were able to make Maria comfortable, consequently drawing witty answers from her. Possible she height came from the explosion, interesting. Maria will always be a controversial figure, as expected due to her popularity. Let me say this, there will never be another Maria Sharapova & Serena Williams. So let’s all enjoy the hype before they both retire. Surely, I will miss them both when they go.

Nobody knew she was on it except her dad, a doctor and agent. Wow.... I think Sway was hypnotised by her beauty ha ha ha - This is some slick PR for casual tennis onlookers. Let the tennis talk from now on. She enhanced with a blood booster for a decade. No question about what alternative medication she is on now? For that heart condition? And she doesn't think race is a factor in endorsements - wow! Glad she is coming out from under her rock. Good stuff for students of marketing and how to rescue a slip-up that throws a major sports product into chaos. Slick .

    I am down with Serena absolutely without a doubt, I have been big into Grand Slam Tennis for the past...10 yrs. I always liked Maria. I haven't paid attention to this whole drama but I believe what she said, the doping wasn't intentional. I feel like everyone has made such a big deal about Maria v. Serena on and off the court and have turned it to being more so white v. black. I have mad respect for Maria as an athlete. I saw someone say she was the most overrated tennis player ever. Remember Anna Kournikova. If my memory serves me right she was at least for a time the highest grossing for endorsements and she never won any tournaments, let alone a Grand Slam title.

      Thanks. Black Americans tend to look at *everything* through the racial lens. When there are other factors at play. When it comes to endorsements (female - particularly) attractiveness (or you could say perception of attractiveness) plays a far greater role than anything else.
      Hence, someone like Anna Kournikova who was essentially marketed as a sexpot who plays tennis getting so many endorsement in spite being such an unaccomplished tennis player. If Maria Sharapova looked the way she looked but had melanin she would still have plenty endorsements.
      Further, marketers consider the audience they're marketing to. As the model in the advertising is usually an indicator to the audience from the marketer that they are who the product being marketed is for. So, when you're selling products (that are largely non-tennis related) to a largely White audience in Europe, Australia etc... it makes sense to have someone who looks like them selling the product.
      As Africa's middle class grows, there will be greater opportunities for endorsements in those markets for Black athletes. Black Americans need to stop being so victim-minded. Just because a Black athlete isn't having the success you think they should have doesn't mean it's because of race.
      There are many factors that affect endorsement deals.

      Serendipity Indeed! She speaks very well and vervalizes her thoughts so eloquently. Maria is not just a good-looking lass, I feel she is intelligent & well-raised by her parents that has led her to achieved her many endeavours in life. She is human after all & all these talk about her being cold, & all the negative vibes coming from everywhere is drawfed by the admiration of her fans, millions of them in fact. There is always a price to pay when an individual such as Maria Sharapova becomes a highly accomplished woman. Coupled by her good looks it even gets more complicated. How often in any generation will someone of her caliber graces the courts again. The last time it happened was when Chrissie Evert played back in the 80’s I think. Likewise, how often will we see another Serena Williams play the tennis sport again? Why don’t we just enjoy their presence & appreciate the dedication they’ve so far given in tennis. Besides she keeps mentioning how Forbes don't have the access to her banks account so she never believe those athletes paid list. It's called valuation based on their endorsement deals and prize money. For individual sports like tennis and golf ,it's based on their prize money + endorsements whereas for team sports like basketball and football is based on their salaries/wages + endorsements.

    Race has nothing to do with sponsorship. Maria is probably the hottest tennis player ever to exist and she can play really well too. Common sense would say she would get the most sponsorships. There was a time when Anna Kournikova was making more endorsement deals than Martina Hingis or Lindsay Davenport despite the fact that she never won a single Grand Slam and never became a world no 1 player. But nobody talks about racism back then. It is only a problem when a white player makes more money than a black player. Playing the race card is getting so boring by now. Venus said it herself, compared to what she went through vs many Eastern European players who doesn't have the sports infrastructure, funding, etc. What she went through was nothing and growing up in America is a blessing in her opinion. In America it is race3. Get over it.

  • @ChroniclesofMexico
    @ChroniclesofMexico Před 6 lety +5

    Serena doesn't get as much endorsements because she isn't moving product on the things that she does endorsements. The media has this idea that success on the court or field is what drives endorsements. That has never been the case. Sometimes it can go hand in hand, Michael Jordan is the greatest celebrity endorser of all time. He was winning a lot of titles. He was moving a ton of product when he had zero rings. Michael Jordan made and still makes a ton more in endorsements than Lebron James because Jordan moves product. People wanted to be like MJ. Not like Lebron. You can decide what is the reason.
    The idea that your success on the court will translate to endorsements only takes shape if the public loves you. For whatever reason the public doesn't really like Serena that much. Now Maria has a huge international following. If your a company that needs or wants to make a splash worldwide Maria makes a lot of sense and she has shown she can move product. That is how you get paid. Companies do not care what color you are if you can move the product.
    Now I think the biggest problem Serena has had is how she comes off at times. People love Venus Williams. If Serena had the personality of Venus I think she could move product better. I think now Serena is admired for what she has accomplished but not someone that can get a group of people to buy something.

    The whole "highest paid" is misleading. Serena easily earns more on court than Maria through tournament wins. Endorsements are what make Maria "highest paid". Also, when it comes to race being a factor in endorsements. I think it's more of a gender issue. Black male athletes have been predominantly the face of products for the last 35 years. You never hear of racial pay disparity among black and white male athletes. Let's also not forget that people in the U.S. don't really watch tennis and don't even know how the scoring works. It's rarely even on tv unless you subscribe to Tennis Channel.

    I respect her family's journey and what they came through to live well off her success, but the Serena issue started by media, marketing and imaging promoting Maria as if she was on par or better than Serena/Venus and the best that the female tennis world had to offer...she was making more and getting endorsements over the best players...
    It wasn't Maria's fault, but that is the struggle...what Maria is saying today about wanting Serena to be successful and deserving to be the highest paid isn't what she or her team cared to say or frankly was required to say as the "rivalry" was at its peak...
    The world thinks less of Black people and specifically darker complected people...making Maria the target of that pain is childish, but to act like the standard of beauty, popularity and what should be merit based promotion devolving into color prejudice isn't real is adding insult to injury...
    Decent interview...

    There are like 2 black women playing the game for every 1000 white women, and people think it's some kind of race discrimination that one of the two black women isn't the #1 highest paid in endorsement deals which are third-party deals that have nothing to do with the sports institutions.
    Let me explain something about what sells products in a commercial market-place.
    Sex.
    If you have 1000 women of one race and 2 of another race, wouldn't you expect that at least 5 or 6 of the women from the group of 1000 would be sexier than the 2 of the other race?
    Endorsement deals aren't just about your stats in your sport. Since when has that ever been the case? The stats just propel you to fame and get you prize money. The looks also propel you to further fame, and help you get endorsement deals. Then the businesses want to use your fame and looks together to sell their product.
    Black people need to stop seeing racism everywhere. I once looked for a tiger-shape in the clouds, and guess what? I saw one. If I'd looked for an elephant shape, I'm sure I'd have seen one of those too.

    I think it's incredible that most of the comments are about her and Serena. The bottom-line is she is not there to talk about their so-called rivalry she's there to promote her autobiography.
    I also think it's a step in the right direction for a white tennis player like her in bridging the gap in establishing a dialogue with the so-called black/African-American community. I congratulate her for doing that given her circumstances over the past 18-months.
    (Just an FYI I'm a Serena fan through-on-through but I'd like to think I can assess one's character objectively).

      Mrreciprocat2: Firstly, I never said that bridging the gap between white tennis players and the African-American community was the primary reason she was there. But for heaven sake, she was there. Action speaks louder than words brother. Furthermore, even if she is a "devious character" (which I find very cynical, be more positive man) I would also look at this interview being hugely beneficial for SWAY (in terms of marketing) given that they can benefit from her huge fanbase. It works both ways mate.
      Secondly, it's very easy to be cynical about people. What you're saying is a misrepresentation of her character and I would go as far being slanderous. Unless you know her personally with enough interactions and can provide sufficient evidence, you cannot call her a "devious character".
      I am not a huge of Maria Sharapova but I respect her for her achievements and consider this interview--regardless of what others think--as positive. TELL ME HOW MANY WHITE TENNIS PLAYERS HAVE DONE THIS? Where's Federer? (his mother is South African btw). Where's Nadal? Where's Novak Djokovic? Even where's Americas beloved duo, Sampras and Agassi?
      For that matter where are all the FEMALE/MALE BLACK TENNIS PLAYERS. Where are they?
      Lastly, I urge you to judge this character below:
      An American president who oversaw and continued the country's incessant military-industrial complex in the Middle-East from 2008-2016. To add that also allowed the Prison Industrial Complex to continue the facilitation of so-called African-American's filling up America's private prison population. A president who allowed numerous incidences of police brutality to remain unchallenged in the justice system and further damage the relations between the police and African-Americans community. Despite all this happening, he was on shows like Ellen promoting LGBT rights. Heck! He even went one step further by enabling gay marriage and pushing Bills for the Latino community--but nothing of real significance for the so-called African-Americans. I would even go far as asking, what did he do in aiding Africa's development? Nothing!
      Was he ever on shows like SWAY? If he wasn't he clearly isn't black right? That means Sharapova must be more black than Obama because she was on SWAY....lol
      If I had poor judgement of character I would say that Obama was a bad and manipulative person? But despite the things I've just mentioned and problem areas of his presidency reported by the media I can't because I don't know him personally. Which why I reserve my judgements on his tenure as president and that alone.

    Tennis is a global sport. It is a rivalry because the money those matches make, buzz they create, etc, has no equal in women sport. And she wins more money than Serena because she generates more money for the sponsors than Serena. And it's sad to say this, because 23 GS to 5 GS, she worked harder than Serena creating a global fan base. She went to places to play exhibitions that Serena didn't bother to go. When Serena went to Argentina to play (a country with a big tradition in tennis), Sharapova already has been there; and Brazil, Colombia, Chile. And made gigs for her sponsors there, while when Serena went, she didn't even stayed for 24 hours and didn't give interviews. She looked uninstered to speak to anyone. So guess who makes headlines for cutting her hair, or getting a new sponsor, etc?.

      Her record against Serena is indeed lopsided, and shouldnt be for a player of Maria's caliber, but it isnt Serena's only one. Serena holds many lopsided h2hs against current and past players. Saying Maria's overrated because of one h2h is unfair to her ability. Shes won a career grand slam (one of a select few), been ranked no.1 and is a global ambassador for the sport. So no need to understate her individual merit because of one h2h that she fully admits Serena's doninated.

It so annoying they always mention race

  • @maribelcastillo4859
    @maribelcastillo4859 Před 7 lety +27

    I see people being offended by this "rivalry" between Serena and Maria but like, it wasnt Maria's idea, and in this interview it wasn't Maria the one that kept bringing it up, and I don't think is fair to ask her how she feels about the struggles that Serena and Venus have been through regarding race because thats a question for SERENA AND VENUS! idk but I would never assume to know how someone else feels about something that I've never fazed. so yeah, Maria is no match for Serena and its fucked up that Maria gets more sponsors than Serena, and I think she could take a stand against that but I don't blame her for not doing it.

    • @redblkgirl99
      @redblkgirl99 Před 7 lety +10

      Maribel Castillo well it kind of is her fault because she plays into a lot. She often makes little sneaky diss comments about Serena (I.e. like in her book where she intimates that Serena only beats her because she is big and intimidating. Also she has to be fully aware that she hasn't been winning any titles or majors in like six years before her suspension, understanding people don't get sponorship deals for losing , and how the tennis world views someone who looks like Serena (body type) vs someone who looks like her. You can't tell me she didn't know she got the news coverage,sponsship deals and the such that she got because she was the foil to Serena.

    • @maribelcastillo4859
      @maribelcastillo4859 Před 7 lety +1

      I think you have a good point, she has played into it because the press created this huge "rivalry" that I don't think is valid 'cause those statistics lol (Masha has no chance) but Masha fell into it and so did Serena. lets not forget feuds have played a huge part in women tennis ( I REALLY REALLY wish it wasnt like that). and lets be honest Tennis players can be a bit bitchy and overconfident because sometimes you need that.. I play the oboe and we always get really difficult solos, in order to play good we have to pretend to have a self steem and security that isnt always there so yeah I wouldn't judge any of these women based on youtube interviews... maybe they are just putting up a persona idk

    • @LouisKing995
      @LouisKing995 Před 7 lety

      redblkgirl99 You can't force sponsors to like Serena more. Heck, look at David Beckham - he is probably the richest soccer player ever, even though objectively he wasn't the best. He's top 5 maybe, but not the best. Yet he's the richest - because people like him more than Pele 🤷‍♂️ way of the world.

    • @redblkgirl99
      @redblkgirl99 Před 7 lety +2

      Trajan I'm not saying you can, I'm just saying she is aware of the underlining reasons they would choose her over someone, say like Victoria or Simonea who are winning and who have beaten Serena. She plays into that, she has made it up in her mind to beong okay with playing the foil, to sometimes boarder on vicitimhood, to play up a rivilary (like dating an ex of Serena not long after they broke up) in order to keep this going.
      Also David Beckham would be a good example if David was playing himself off as a foil to Mesi or another great of his time. Also a lot of his money was made here and not in countries where they actually care about futbol, even in England.

    • @redblkgirl99
      @redblkgirl99 Před 7 lety +1

      Maribel Castillo I'm not judging her off one CZcams video, I'm judging her based on her actions and words over the last ten plus years. I actually follow the game so I watch post and are match interviews and read articles posted on the WTA website. And there is a marked difference in how she speaks about Serena than say Victoria or Simonea (both who have beaten her several times in this last five years or so). The last couple of times Serena lost the number one spot she lost it to Victoria. There is the rivilary.

      I used to live around all of these white tennis players in Tampa, and BTH, it's not them with the whiteness stuff yall are talking about, it's the WTA that pushes the racism. I think that's why the Williams wouldn't play Davis Cup ball. I would never represent the very federation that purposefully exalts others around me. We have all these people ignorant of tennis, but talking about these issues.
      Many of these players hate WTA racism. Many eastern Europeans don't care as their parents are very racist. The WTA is like AAU basketball. They stick next to super racist parents. It sucks.

    People calling Sharapova cheater do not know a thing about professional tennis. Also if you thing Serena is clean, you are the same as the deluded Lans Armstrong's fans back in the day, who were overly vocal just because he never got caught. If you do not know, some years ago Serena was visited for a surprise inspection by WADA in her home, instead of opening the door to the man, she flee in to her panic room and claimed later she thought it was an intruder, avoiding to give a sample. You can check the panic room incident online. Also instead of Sharapova, the Williams sisters are constantly legally doping, since they are all the time provided with TUEs from WADA for conditions they claim to have. Enough with the Sharapova doping, everyone does it and be sure that the late 30yrs old American girls that build like men and somehow still compete in the highest level, do it too.
