But whenever you quote a scientific study in your video it would be very helpful to link in the description to further understand the point. It's a standard practice in vaccine & immunology videos.

I am 100% confirmed to have OCD and am fairly certain I have ADHD from recognizing the symptoms in myself and family history. My doctor was reluctant to take further steps immediately due to my diagnosis for OCD but she was willing to give me a referral so I will be getting properly diagnosed in the near future hopefully.

Having both is like hyperfocusing on things you cant control. Because ur afraid of the irrational fears ocd causes, then during manic concentration it focuses on compulsions, but when you care about something for once and the fears haven’t hit yet, adhd causes it extremely hard to focus on the few things u care about

I was diagnosed with both, and they seem to play on each other in really confusing ways. Sometimes I do things and try to analyze which caused me to do that behavior or have that thought. One of my obsessions is researching adhd and ocd, and feeling like I am lying or faking. I also struggle with rejection sensitivity which is crushing. I engage in some inattentive or impulsive behavior, then obsess over how awkward or "cringe" it was, then begin to feel rejected and start to really spiral. I also compulsively seek reassurance from friends that I was normal in interactions or that they really do like me. Some days I just feel like I'm a lot to handle, and I worry that I'm "too much".

I was diagnosed with OCD about four years before my ADHD diagnosis. I actually find that when my OCD isn't as bad, my ADHD tends to be worse, as I can finally access dopamine when my cortisol is low, and vice versa. Ironically, my ADHD tends to end up making the OCD worse, as I'll do something risky or impulsive, then obsess over it and compulsively try to 'correct' everything I said or did.
It's exhausting to say the least. Not impossible, but still tiring. I'm waiting on the NHS to see if I can get some medical assistance for my ADHD as I currently don't take anything for my OCD. We'll see how that goes.

i've been diagnosed with both, the adhd diagnosis has allowed me to bring a lot of self compassion and make sense of a lot of things I've felt shame for before, I do think it makes sense that i have both but there's also part of me that thinks getting caught up in the label can make things worse at times. (especially when you're looking for certainty- the OCD thinking!). In this society ADHD traits are difficult to deal with but i don't think it would be as much of a "problem" if we allowed for diverse brains. Essentially, I see that both make sense for me but I'm trying to focus more on easing my anxiety, being present, not identifying with thoughts too much, and self-acceptance. And i think this will help with whatever symptoms are manifesting.
Part of me also theorises that since OCD is an anxiety disorder, I feel like I've accumulated OCD and let it cover my perhaps inherent ADHD self - so for example, I think if i had let myself I probably would have been more outspoken/ bold/ creative/ taken more risks etc (the "good" adhd traits), but my overthinking about whether i am a good person/ moral/ doing what my family would agree with etc prevented me from being more authentic and taking those risks. I accept that it was all part of the journey though and maybe if more ADHD symptoms had been unleashed then, it wouldn't have been for the best, who knows. anyway just a thought :)
I didn't start this comment intended to ramble, but i think it's also important to remember that these labels and categories are a means to an end (treatment/strategies) and to understand ourselves a bit more, and that ultimately the DSM is very flawed and even experts don't have all the answers, we have pathologised quite a lot of things. I've found it helpful to not identify too strongly to the labels and diagnoses (of course raising awareness/ facing it is important) as they aren't inherent categories. i think my experience of zen/ listening to spiritual teachings etc has helped me to just see things as they are (i still get stuck in patterns ofc) and to understand that no one has all the answers and that ultimately all we have is this moment and the now- I'm sending lots of love and compassion to you if you're confused/ trying to "figure things out" and here's your reminder (and mine) to accept whatever comes and goes, sit with the uncertainty, embrace yourself with compassion and remember that your essence is unbreakable!

I've had symptoms of OCD and ADHD since I was very young, but I was never checked out by a psychiatrist and didn't know that they were symptoms until I was an adult. I was diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year (I'm 36), and in my screening appointment with a psychologist, I mentioned my OCD symptoms too. She told me that OCD can sometimes be a result of ADHD because the ADHD can make your world feel unpredictable and out of control and so your brain tries to develop ways to feel more stability and control. She said she suspected that was true for me because it seems like I have the lack of focus and motivation of ADHD all the time and with everything, but the obsessions/compulsions of OCD only occasionally and with a few things.

”It's been a mix of therapy, music and just life experience. It's like rather than fighting all of the chaos in my brain, I try to compartmentalize so a lot of the time I listen to music or videos with my headphones on while I'm working, and then let the music and lyrics take up some of the space in my head, and then try to hone my focus on my work while the other part of my brain is thinking about music, or imagining elaborate worlds or whatever daydreams I have. It's not always easy, it's just like learning to use the brain power to multitask. I still find myself staring at my computer screen sometimes and daydreaming about fanfiction, so it really just depends on the day.”

The chaos in my brain, day dreaming fan fiction, elaborate worlds, staring at the computer screen, scrolling are all too familiar. The urge to master and be perfect at whatever I do,
only compounds it for me. The hyper focus & creative impulsivity times have been my only saving grace.

  • @chrstopherblighton-sande2981

I have both diagnosed ADHD (combined type) and OCD and I am therefore in no doubt that they do indeed coexist (though I'm open to the possibility that the combination could perhaps be a subtype of one or other of the conditions - or a separate condition of its own). When my OCD is triggered, the obsessions and the anxiety they produce, of course negatively impact my executive functioning, however my executive functions are impaired even when that isn't the case, even when I'm totally calm, non-anxious etc. Whilst my OCD gradually got worse over the years, and then improved somewhat following treatment (though unfortunately the pandemic has made me really struggle again - so much so I'm currently housebound) my ADHD symptoms have remained consistent my entire life - though of course the impacts were different depending on the changing demands of circumstances such as school, work etc).
OCD attenuates my impulsivity in areas where there are risks which really scare me, but not in those areas of life that are not related to my particular OCD themes/fears.
There are certain similarities between my OCD and ADHD: Just as I get hyperfocused on things I'm interested in, not being able to stop myself thinking about them, so I get hyperfocused (obsessed) about the things that scare me. Just as I struggle to inhibit prepotent responses and shift my attention away from something that has enjoyably grabbed my attention and onto something that I should be doing or even need to be doing instead, so I struggle to inhibit compulsive behaviour when my mind becomes latched onto an obsessive fear.
I really hope more research will be done into comorbid adult ADHD+OCD as it is an area which seems to have been neglected.

    • @theloquan
      @theloquan Před 4 měsíci +1

This is a fantastic breakdown. I have clinically diagnosed OCD and ADHD-C. Both play on each other in odd ways, like you say.
For me, both have been present in my earliest memories but I’m sorta convinced the ADHD is more nature (born this way) and the OCD feels more nurture (became this way).
My OCD took on many themes over my life. I feel as a kid, the ADHD helped me not get too stuck on any one theme. Without ADHD, my compulsions would have likely become more unreasonable for any particular theme if given enough time. I was never repeatedly flicking light switches, checking windows, closing the door over and over, etc. These stronger compulsions take time to build up. And ADHD helped me in that sense. But OCD went much longer undetected.
Then when I developed contamination OCD, it became more “based in logic” because we all need to maintain a level of hygiene. Now that my OCD theme is logical, I don’t notice it as a problem (I do know it makes me anxious) or notice my rituals as extreme compared to others. By now, the ADHD is making things worse. And when the pandemic hit, MUCH WORSE. I was constantly re-cleaning, re-washing, and restarting things over and over because I’d gotten distracted and couldn’t remember what I’d already done. Or lost focus somewhere in between. So much money on gloves and wipes and paper towels. This was the worst because it takes time to deal with OCD and with ADHD, you don’t delegate time well. So all my usable time is spent on compulsions and refocusing attention. It’s quite exhausting. Some days I’d just flat out sit in a pile of anxiety, unable to do anything about it because ADHD, then getting more anxiety because I’m not doing it. Then if I DO do something, it’s got to be by OCD rules but on the ADHD schedule. Super incompatible at this point.
I can only articulate this now that I know I have these conditions. I just always thought I was anxious and lazy with a short fuse. At 30, Contamination OCD was what brought me to a doctor. It was undeniable this was OCD, but when I learned I had ADHD as well, looking at my life through that lens gave me a ton of ‘AHA’ moments. ADHD is more detectable in hindsight or during reflection, not really in the moment, and OCD is just screaming right in your face all the time.
The irony is in the coping strategies for each condition. ADHD symptoms improve greatly with structure and routine (which OCD loves) and OCD symptoms improve by “not giving it attention” which ADHD loves! But it’s like they’re each each other’s blind spot. It’s quite a malicious combo. Medication has helped me most but therapy has increased the therapeutic experience.
I hope you’re doing better today. I know this is an old comment but I am wishing you well!

Oh man. I spent YEARS thinking I had ADHD. Like, super convinced. But then I started seeing my current therapist, who is a specialist in OCD, and she suggested that may actually be my problem.
Of course I went home and googled for hourssssss looking for answers... At first I didn't believe it because I've been in therapy for YEARS, have seen numerous different therapists, and none of them ever spotted my OCD. My themes are not the stereotypical germophobia, etc. I realized that if you made a venn diagram of the various symptoms of both diagnoses, I meet EVERY SINGLE ONE in the middle, but none of the ones exclusive to other diagnosis.
The thing that really got me: behavior that I always thought was *impulsive* (procrastinating, retail therapy, googling into all hours of the night) were actually *compulsive.*
I do think that there's a possibility that I still have ADHD, but over the years, I've developed systems and habits to deal with those issues, just out of necessity. My ADHD traits don't distress me when my OCD is under control, and that's ultimately what matters.

As somebody with ADHD and OCD that also struggles with many more disorders/disabilities, my main conflict is debating on what to do and multitasking, bc I’m going back and forth between tasks while my brain has every thought imaginable and “if you don’t flip the pancake 2 times ur gonna bash ur head open on a horse ride” and while constantly feeling burnt out (autism, SPD etc.) you have inconsistent meltdowns that you can barely tell apart from shutdowns/breakdowns. There is many more but this is one of them that happens at least 2x a week.

It affects relationships and could even hinder many opportunities that arise. To make it worse, the people that surround you such as family and friends, may not understand the concept of ocd. You feel alone and hopeless. The constant thinking in your brain makes you tired. When all those things add up, you just want to give up. There’s when the depression comes in.

I have both. I'm actively in ERP therapy through NOCD and have been taking stimulants for ADHD.
My ocd therapist suggested I go get an ADHD evaluation. I apparently masked very well as a kid. Wild that it took until I was 27 to get that noticed. My therapist mentioned she does see a decent amount of patients who have both.
I can definitely feel the difference. An OCD spiral is negative in nature. The ruminating takes me down a loop of doom. I lack focus because I can only focus on the obsession.
ADHD, it's definitely like lack of focus in general. A lack of "willpower" that I attributed to depression. Even fun things I wanted to do, I was unable to. I was stuck. But this doesn't have the accompanying intrusive thoughts. I'm not stuck on my couch because if I get up my kid will die (OCD) I'm stuck because the executive function button is broken.
They definitely feed into each other at times. The shortcomings I have with ADHD such as forgetting where my keys are, not remembering a verbal promise to a loved one, inability to finish tasks give my OCD plenty of fodder for intrusive thoughts.
ERP helps. The Adderall helps me remember to actually do my ERP and I have noticed an additional drop intrusive thoughts compared to when I was only doing ERP. I was previously on an SSRI which did help, but not at all to the same degree.
I can also see the potential for a misdiagnosis in either direction as outwardly there are overlapping symptoms. But inwardly, I experience these symptoms very differently as the mental states are different.
Fidgeting for stimulation and to help focus and fidgeting due to anxiety are another overlapping symptom. But again, the subjective experience is different. I tend to click pens, tap my fingers etc for ADHD and bite my nails and pick my skin due to anxiety/OCD though it can blur at times.

Quentin: hey! Newly diagnosed adhd buddies! I'm roughly 6 weeks into having medication. Luckily I haven't experienced many drawbacks/bad side effects. The worst I've had is taking Adderall XR (extended release) + forgetting to eat+ having an energy drink on said empty stomach. Do not recommend haha that really spiked my anxiety. But when I take the meds as intended aka remember to eat and don't overdue it with caffeine I have had positive results.
Ymmv, but I hope you have a positive experience with medication! I didn't realize how much I was struggling in certain areas until I had the support from the meds. Definitely recommend keeping snacks around if possible. I really underestimated the "kills your appetite" side effect. And if you have to try a different stimulant or dosage, please don't be discouraged. It should be very apparent if your current dosage is effective or not. Unlike SSRIs theres no build up. I saw the difference within an hour.

I did ERP and had a symptom of constantly being overwhelmed. I knew it wasn’t ocd. It was like stuff remained as my ocd got under control. My new therapist (old one only specialized in ocd) mention adhd as a possibility and it sounds so much like me, especially as a child but I have so much doubt (thanks ocd) bc of the way they function in the brain. And ofc bc “what if you don’t have ocd 🙄” doing CBT now. Whatever helps, helps imo. I like the ocd label bc it explained my mental breakdown, made it less scary and helped me not feel alone. Whatever I’m struggling with now, I just need tools to help manage. That’s just my perspective but I do hope science can catch up into understanding these conditions. QoL is almost never measured for successful treatment but imo it’s just as important. The more we know, the more we can help people struggling. Thanks so much for your informative videos.

Your description is like me to a T. I've been convinced I have OCD and ONLY OCD for so many years and I've only ever used treatment methods( both ERP and SSRIs) for that issue, with little to no effect. Turns out I've had ADHD since I was a kid as well, and that's never been addressed until now.
Therapy seems Impossible to hold on to, like I can never do it right or I don't respond the same way everytime. So inconsistent, and SSRIs have never done a thing for me. I kind of have hope again that maybe by treating the ADHD I can finally make some progress on my dealing with OCD symptoms!

I spent around $4,000 earlier this year to see if I had a learning disability and or ADHD. My current therapists wanted me to get the tests done. After all the testing I had done it still comes back to an OCD diagnosis. No learning disability and no ADHD. I was always labeled with a learning disability when I was in school because back then they didn't know much about OCD.

I’m diagnosed with ADHD & anxiety but I’ve been told by family they think I have OCD as well. I just thought they assumed that because I like things organized (my house is currently a mess tho), but for me it’s a coping method & hyper fixation that helps my ADHD so I know where things are. Started SSRI’s (already on ADHD meds) and started unpacking my anxiety more, and I’m learning what OCD ACTUALLY is and I’m thinking that’s thrown in the mix too.. 😅 my SSRI’s treat both anxiety & ocd (and depression) anyway so I guess that’s all good and fine 😂

I always figured I have both. I'd absolutely have to make sure everything was organized a certain way....and couldn't not do it, or I'd get sick.
But at the same time,.many times, I wouldn't be able to focus, and get distracted by anything and everything...and fewer times still, I got stuck in what I call a "death loop".
I was compelled to do something, say, make sure everything was lined up perfectly...but at the same time I didn't want to do it. And was internally screaming at myself to do ANYTHING ELSE PLEASE. Inwardly it was me arguing with myself. But outwardly (what people saw) was me frozen in place essentially.
I wasn't really moving, and staring off into space. A coworker actually had to approach me and break this logic loop for me to break away, simply by talking to me, and then having me go do something else. Then told me what happened and asked if I was OK.

I was recently diagnosed with both but I knew I’d had issues for quite some time. It’s like I don’t get anything done. I hyperfocus on things like CZcams and video games and drawing and certain shows to the point where it’s like crazy obsessive and it’s like I can’t function cause I can do it for like 8 hours straight or longer but I also obsess over things and do compulsions, particularly “am I a bad person.” Both of these cause me to get nothing done but I’m sure the first thing isn’t ocd and it’s been that way ever since I was really little. I have very very poor working memory according to my test so I forget things right after I do them but I guess I have an exception for things I did a long time ago cause I can remember every detail about why I may be a bad person and obsess over it for hours or I’m very aware of all my actions to make sure I am not offending anyone but I can’t be anywhere on time of get things done right the way people asked me too. It’s like my brain is just constantly on fire :( idk

Teachers even noticed she used to use her fingers to trace letters help her sound out the words. She always been emotional. I was curious because some of the things make since others don't fit with her like she is very talkative, she doesn't act out or do risky stuff.

In OCD episodes, the focus is locked upon something you are afraid of, or worried about which definitely covers traits like attention deficit in ADHD. And when OCD ebbs gradually, your brain could finally take a break after exhausting thinking, you may find yourself in lack of motivation as a possible result from avoiding the original pressure source of OCD. Such discursive lifestyle accentuates ADHD syndromes. That's my guess after OCD and discerning something about ADHD in me.

  • @senco445
    @senco445 Před měsícem

I was recently diagnosed with both. ADHD kind of counters OCD, since you literally sometimes get distracted from those intimidating and disturbing thoughts for some time at least until it comes back again. While OCD kind of supports ADHD because there is more to be distracted by. Of course there are probably several aspects I didn’t observe yet since I’ve just learned about my condition. It overall ends up in a kind of a bad experience though.

  • @becky931
    @becky931 Před rokem +6

ADHD feels like the rebellion to my OCD. It's goofy, thrill-seeking, laughs in the face of danger and uncertainty and consequences, hates "shoulders", and lives like The Dude. It doesn't like to be told what to do and doesn't want life to be so serious, and often serves to distract from the OCD. The OCD comes out less often but its much more intense, like it goes on a bender for days. It wants order and answers in the chaos and a sense of control and discipline, but its never enough! ADHD's hyperfocus is passionate, spontaneous, and avoiding responsibility. OCD's is anxious problem-solving. Sometimes ADHD meds can help drastically me break out of a rumination-freeze state, sometimes they make the fixation on them so much worse. Then again, I'm so aware this is all just speculation. Guess I have to just say "I dunno, maybe, maybe not" and keep going to therapy.

Someone without ADHD would feel hyped up so that's why I know my brain actually needs it. So if I really had OCD and not ADHD wouldn't I get hyped up from a stimulant and not improve with it?

I had horrible obsessions and a decent amount of compulsions in middle school, and it was awful. I don't have an official diagnosis so I'm technically self-diagnosed, but it was so severe that OCD is the only thing that fits what I experienced. When I was 17, I started experiencing it again for a couple months, but the obsessions went away. Do people still have OCD even when there aren't intense obsessions and/or compulsions present? I'm doing great mentally now and don't feel like I'm exhibiting any symptoms, but I did just get diagnosed with ADHD last year and think I might want to look into whether or not ADHD is really just sneaky OCD.

But I addressed my OCD first through CBT work. What I noticed was that as my OCD symptoms decreased, my ADHD came out tremendously more. Not sure why, but that’s been my experience so far.
Ive also noticed when I’m stressed it’s easy to fall back into those OCD habits. What’s crazy to me with my OCD, I could tell myself that these were rituals or routines were “crazy” and had no basis on what I was doing them for but I HAD to do it or that immense anxiety took over despite my previous thoughts.
