People that are more religious usually do this. Sometimes it's "selamat muhasabah"; selamat is Indonesian for happy, and muhasabah is Arabic for self-reflection if I'm not mistaken.

@@jamasq why worry about that? life is about living not worrying about the fact that you’re getting closer to death. You grow every year as a person and there’s nothing wrong with celebrating that. Death is really not a bad thing (generally speaking), it’s just the end of your story here and that’s okay

Or some people also condense it to “Happy bday!” with or without a dash in between “bday”. I think this is more casual and something that is used for closer friends where it’s not seen as inconsiderate for not spelling out “birthday”. I personally use it a lot because if you just write it out regular as “Happy birthday!” it’s kind of more formal and seems as though not much thought was put into it. But that’s just how I see it and you can use any phrase that works for you.

I had to look up "many happy returns" to understand how and if it's used. The phrase on its own makes no sense even if said on someone's birthday because the phrase isn't used and people have no idea that it's shortened from, "Happy birthday and many happy returns of the day." Native American English speakers don't use this phrase for birthdays... I would guess not since the colonial time just by the way it's worded. My experience with the phrase has always been with Christmas. Someone would wish you a Merry Christmas and you'd reply, "and many happy returns."
