What Is A Matte Transition?
Well, inside OBS, you have scenes, essentially a scene is a group of overlays, cams, and browser sources that fit your needs, you could have a scene with a large full-screen cam for just chatting to your viewers, let's call this Scene A, and a scene for when you’re playing games that has a game capture, and a small webcam, let’s call this Scene B.
When you click between these scenes or transition, there are lots of different effects to make it look smoother or more professional, you can hard cut obviously, fade to black, or the most common one is to use a Stinger transition, this is essentially an animation that plays and covers the screen in full, and when the screen is entirely covered Scene A will cut to Scene B.
Essentially the stinger transition hides the hard cut and makes the transition smoother, for the longest time Stingers helped give streams that kick of production value, making you look and feel more professional, it’s why we released a pack a year or so ago of literally 30 - 40 different stingers for free… but now we have Matte transitions which blow Stingers out of the water.
Matte Transitions usually come as one single video, essentially two 1920 by 1080p sized animations next to each other, on the left is an animation similar to stingers, but on the right, the second animation is purely black and white, OBS takes this animation of black and white, and uses it as a map to reveal or hide different sections of Scene A and Scene B. The black is our starting Scene, and the white is the revealing of Scene B, they do these reveals while the animation on the left plays over the top like a normal stinger would.

How To Install Matte Stinger Transitions Into OBS
Head to the Scene Transitions dock, click the plus sign, and click Stinger, name it the Matte Transition you want, Click the Settings or Properties, and click Browse, this will open up a folder explorer, go to the Folder that you extracted earlier, and select the transition you want to use, make sure you’ve gone into the right folder and you’re using the webm, not the .mov or .mp4 files, we’re going to use fire in this case.
Now the next step is crucial, make sure you click Use A Track Matte here, or else when we preview the transition… it’s going to look, well the technical term for how it looks is fucked… so don’t miss that step.
On the Matte Layout, it should say Same file side by side, stinger on left, track matte on the right, this is what you’ll select if you’re using the wider video files the two side by side, but if you go get a matte transition off someone else they may have created it on the top and bottom, which is why that exists.
Now you need to know about this drop-down because we’ve included a few that are just masks, Matte Stinger 1 through 8, or essentially any of the video files that aren’t wide side by side, and instead are just the black and white 1080p files when you put it in, you’ll open this drop-down and click “Mask Only”
Now, that should be it, click preview and, if you have selected the right transition properly and followed along carefully, it should work!
The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and Gaming Careers in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Wild4games and Nutty.

Used to use the stinger version of it but my laptop would sometimes skip frames so it wouldn’t sync properly, hopefully with the matte transitions it’ll be better 🙏🏽
