    What a great guest! I lost my dad in 2018, I picked up ff14 a few months later, played through everything, ShB hit me hard, EW hit harder, and DT made me reevaluate if I really dealt with his loss. Yes the graha scene where he asked those questions really broke me down.

    I feel like for the start of a new journey, having an expansion where the big bad is threatening, but shown to be no match compared to us, the scions, and our friends along the way is a pretty good look. Like "Oh no they have war ships". So did garlamald, how'd that work out for them?

    i think whats interesting and people forget, is that the source is the main world. no other shard can exist without the source, but the source is fine if other shards fall into disarray or disappear entirely (of course, rejoining wise, people suffer as a result but yknow). the fact that we are STILL dealing with shards, even after zodiark and hydaelyn's demise and the twelve are no longer needed and can pass on into the life stream, is an interesting aspect in and of itself. and, interestingly, the fact that azem KNEW somehow, to MAKE the device that they do... i believe that venat had told azem about what was going on/what was going to happen. then again, azem seems omniscient to the fact that we travel back into the past to help elibidus during pandaemonium, so azem's omniscience is in and of itself a whole thread regarding time travel! maybe we'll go back to another part of the ancient world somehow and meet them!

    Firstly, I just want to say that Michael was great and I hope to see him on the show again. I was really happy that you got a guest for the spoiler cast as it’s always beneficial to get other perspectives when you’re talking about something super long and massive like an RPG story.
    That being said, one thing I wanted to offer a slight correction about is the fact that you kept saying that the reflection that Alexandria exists in is screwed i.e. could not be rejoined but that was never stated in the story. What WAS stated is that they SPECIFICALLY cut the area off from the aetherial flow via the barrier so that souls would instead be trapped so they could have their memories separated and the souls reused again. They likened it to the Void in that the effect was similar but it differs in that it could simply be turned off. I think this qualifies more as a shard being brought to the brink and seemingly being held there by Sphene’s actions which were orchestrated by Preservation which I imagine had at least one Ascian’s hands in it. In fact, I suspect we are going to learn about said Ascian in the patch content.

    Thanks for a level-headed discussion of the story! I was satisfied by MSQ in DT, it’s not my favorite by far, but it was good. And I think the incredibly polarized takes are kind of missing the idea that the expansion can be in between those poles.

    • @AvengingFossilx
      @AvengingFossilx Před měsícem +17

      This is the problem when the majority of your playerbase started playing in Shadowbringers. They think that every expansion story needs to live up to that level and that anything worse than that is suddenly horrible.
      If Dawntrail had followed up Stormblood instead, people would be endlessly praising it.

    • @garrettwinkler3687
      @garrettwinkler3687 Před měsícem +17

      Exactly. And shb lore also hung on three previous expansions-worth of build up and even more for Endwalker. I think it’s a little crazy to expect DT to pack the same punch when it’s already been made clear that this is the start of a new arc. If things seem “underbaked”, it’s cuz you haven’t given it any time to actually fully cook. We’ll likely spend the rest of the patches uncovering more about Alexandria and stuff. It’s like calling Yotsuyu underdeveloped without playing the StB patch content.

    • @Lesgo67
      @Lesgo67 Před měsícem +1

      @@AvengingFossilx I would even disagree that the negative feedback comes just from comparing it to shadowbringers. In my opinion, SHB isn't even close to the best expac story wise, even if a lot of people claim it is.
      A lot of the negative feedback comes from npcs spewing the "new bad, old good" contrarian nonsense that plagues any discussion related to MMORPGs (not just 14). Additionally, a lot of people unironically didn't understand what made SHB good, they didn't enjoy it for the themes or any sort of character development, but simply because the ascians were cool, Emet was sexy or the expansion felt dark and edgy. DT has plenty of compelling character development with discernible motivations, strong themes, extensive lore and raises interesting philosophical questions, but if you don't have the media literacy to pick up on any of it, then it won't do you any good. A lot of people unironically can't pay attention when they read, so they prefer a storyline like SHB that revolves to a large extend around killing big bad ugly monsters. Why care about learning about a land by retracing the path of its founder when you can just be beating up lightwardens?
      The overwhelming majority of the people i met in game loved the story. But the redditors will always skew things negatively, either because they enjoy being recreationally angry, or fail to grasp that things can be good even if they fall outside of their extremely narrow field of interest.

    Happy's overall thoughts are the same as mine, pretty much. It was a solid, good time. Could've been better? Probably, but also could've been way worse and it wasn't. People need to remember this is essentially a new ARR. They are laying the next 10y worth of foundation, it's a new world, new characters, new interactions with the old known ones, etc.
    It was never going to reach the highest peaks of ShB and EW but honestly it probably shouldn't have either. We're definitely building up to it and now that we had a solid start that's, IMO, definitely better than the low points we had previously in ARR and probably even SB which is a less favorite story arc; it will likely only go up from here.
    Content-wise, Dawntrail has been promised as Stormblood v2: it literally has EVERYTHING that the game had so far, which can be both a good and a bad thing depending on execution, but if they stick with known patterns and keep the excellent fight design we're in for a good time in the .X patches for sure.

    Something you all glossed over in this podcast are the implications about Golool Ja. We are told that he was found abandoned and was never given a second look by his father. Given that a mother was never mentioned ANYWHERE it seems likely that she died either in childbirth or when Golool Ja was still an infant and thus the memory of her was wiped from any who knew her…INCLUDING his father who then had even less of a connection to the child.

    • @BigChilla420
      @BigChilla420 Před měsícem

      I was wondering about that too, if there was a mother she'd have to be one of the Mamool Ja trapped in or who were heading to Yyasulani on the train.
      Personally I think maybe he refused to have his memories recreated and stored in the cloud, and that they had to clone him so he'd have an heir something similar to Sphene always being around. This way they could introduce Zoraal Ja, erase his story with a time skip, then redeem him and retcon the evil arc with a new name.

    "DT wants to be a visual novel" and "it tells more than it shows" are the 2 biggest problems with DT and imo why there is such a mixed reaction from the fanbase. If they took this golden opportunity to tell the story through more gameplay elements and make us actually feel like we're mentoring Wuk Lamat and assisting her through her trials instead of just watching, everything would've landed much better and felt more fresh. Other than that the story was mostly fine except for one part imo.
    Heritage Found should've been the last map, and we should've went to living memory pretty much right after we found the gate to it, or maybe after going to Texas. This would've given us time to learn about it in a possibly much more fun way. Fete style/mini game fates, since this is suppose to essentially be man made heaven. Fun story bits in general to make us grow more attached to it, Sphene, and her people. Then after we leave, the audience sees that Zoraal Ja snuck in and then forms an alliance with Sphene. Then basically the same story happens afterwards but they cut out all the filler.
    If they did this, the story would've felt like one big story instead of two completely different parts to the story. Not to mention going back to Living Memory to find monsters running amuck, citizens glitching due to energy reserves running low, and Erenville's mom there would've been a big shock. Also, killing it off after this would've hit much harder. However, even if the story remained exactly the same, and it simply didn't have the 2 main problems, it would've been a much better experience by far.

    Honestly I wasn't a huge fan of Dawntrail's entire story but the last zone is one of my fave zones and I go back to it with the lights off on purpose, because it means so much The thought of pulling the plug will hit any human who has lost someone they wished they had more time with. G'raha Tia hit the mark when he said if he can just give one more day to someone.
    I also want to add that living Memory after you turn the lights off there is a sun, a moon, stars, weather and rain. When you look down its full of Mist just like FF9. Some quests makes it seem them using electric aether in medical implications caused it to be pushed towards lighting aether aswell. But it looks like the calamity on their shard is over. There's no more lightning skies or anything.. truly makes me think their shard is fine and liveable now. Which also adds to the whole thing of the preservation system just kep their citizens locked away without even to look if the calamity was over.

      At many points she tries to conceal her struggles, because she believes that a leader must appear strong. This includes simple things such as pretending she doesn't suffer from sea sickness. It really feels like the sort of story that is better received if you just experience it without feeling a need to (over) analyze every bit of it or need to stop and discuss every story beat with a live chat (who may have already seen it and are poking and prodding you for Your Opinion). Not that analysis and introspection are a bad thing but they can easily get in the way of just experiencing a story as it's being told to you.
    One element that doesn't really get brought up often in regards to Zarool Ja is his relationship with his siblings. Yes, he was told all his life that he was the Chosen One and the First Promise, and he wasn't able to live up to that. But he was also being told that alongside his own father adopting other children. Just imagine being told that You are the Special One while at the same time you are looking over at two other kids your father adopted by choice who maybe get more love and attention than you do. Sure he was just not quite right in the head to begin with but that sort of additional feeling of a lack of worth certainly didn't help.

I think the endless were meant to mirror or mimic the Ancients and their eternal life and show us how and why it wouldn't be possible to try and be like them again, that their world is more like ours now and people have to be mortal and pass away. Similar themes in EW with the fate of all the species Meteion encountered also. I never connected Emet to Sphene.... I did not particularly like her.... Well, not like her but I did not care too much for her because all my predictions in my thoughts came immediately true. Unlike emet who was mysterious and strange and one could not predict how he would react/what he would say, what he would do... she was a very straight forward easily predictable character. I wish she was a playable race though, (new hyur face??) I also want all the new hairstyles we saw (Koana, Sphene)
    Also... I could not help but have this wild thought.... this thought occur to me during Endwalker a bit, but after DT it was jus something not able to escape my mind:
    Shard travel, introduce others' culture, equality, accept everyone in one world............... it's as if they try to introduce people into "Data center world wide travel".
    At first I thought "naaaah........ no I am linking this ridiculoud thing." But I could not help but think of it. I honestly am not interested in any other shards/worlds... unless a good story is build around it like shadowbringers was 3 expansions before....... at this point I become a little numb about the idea of traveling overworld because the worlds die anyway........ just like the dome.

It's not about "needing to take time to worldbuild", "we're not the main character" (you aren't in many Final Fantasy games anyway), "it's a slow low stakes adventure to reset" - because none of those are *new* for FFXIV. What is "new" is that the writing and execution of these concepts was uncharacteristically childish and flat, for a team that has given us much more interesting and engaging worldbuilding and companions in the past.

      Agreed. The first and second halves are poorly written in many ways. Character motivations are ill-defined, shallow, and are left too much to speculation. Much of the story really needed to be explored more, our involvement is poorly justified outside of us just needing to be there to do all of the new content, and there is a ton of heavy-handed, overly repeated exposition that really makes it feel like the writers were talking down to the players.

There was a major tone shift after they brought everyone back from being deleted during the finale of EW. This game lacks stakes now. Nothing feels dangerous and it makes everything extremely boring. ARR made the Ascians scary cause they possessed Thancred and absolutely wiped out the scions. Heavensward established their villains when they absolutely merced our boy and then Nidhog took over estinien. Zenos is like the terminator and a constant threat. Emet was entertaining and it was fun to have him popping in and out and I felt like he could have snapped any one of us out of existence at any moment. It felt like we were only allowed to live by his whim. They need to make the WOL lose to something or be powerless to stop it in the next xpac.
