Motorcycle Camping in the Strong Winds of the Columbia Gorge

  • Things don't always go as planned when we're Motorcycle Camping. Particularly if you choose to camp in a VERY Windy place like the Columbia River Gorge. Tack on being wet from a rainy three hour ride, wind chill, and it just being straight up cold because it's Spring... Not everyone's idea of a good time.

    The Veggie Paella Recipe: veganhuggs.com...
    I substituted:
Vegetable Broth for a Chicken Bullion Cube dissolved in hot water
Frozen Peas for some chopped up Fresh Sugar Snap Peas
I also cut the recipe so it would just be enough for me.

AZ, we live in a parallel universe. First week of March I ran into hellacious winds in southern NM. Had a campsite reserved at Pancho Villa State Park. Got there, the kind camp lady-host suggested that I move over to another site that had a stone wall that would shield me. If the tent had been five inches wider it would have never fit between the wall and the concrete picnic table. Got a good nights sleep in my summer bag. The next morning, the wind had increased from 15 to twenty to 30 to 40 with 50mph gusts. I head north to I-10, checked the weather which had been a great ten day forecast only to learn it all crashed. Headed back to El Paso on I 10, speed limit 80, I barely did 30 fighting the winds, rode through a dust storm and Thunder snow in my retreat. Had a great tail wind back to IN though!! Your comments at 14:00 are spot on. Just keep going. NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER GIVE UP. Appreciate your posts, always. Travel to breakfast? as long as I have coffee, the bike doesn't need to be turned on....

Going on a REALLY long to me ( 7000km ) and got lost. Was ready to turn around after getting lost and going in circles for over an hour in the same town. Called my bf and told him I am not cut out for this. He told me to get back on the bike and go. (he was watching my on the spot tracker). When I finally got on the right path again there was 2 messages on my phone. The first one was get off there (referring to highway). The second one was "atta girl". To this day when things go rough I remember that message and keep going.

I had flashbacks watching this! I camped on my first big solo trip a few years back on the Columbia Scenic byway, on the river on that wind was the worst I've ever camped in and putting up my tent alone was hysterical (to others). My video was off the charts funny when I watched it at home. The struggle there is REAL. Loved the video.

It all feels so familiar. Camp set up, the stove comes out, aaaaaaand .... right about when I would heat water to add to some pre-packaged (but nonetheless tasty) food, Amanda busts out REAL food and commences to create "Veggie Paella" (in this case)!!!! I guess I still treat food more as an afterthought on a ride. But I DO hope to be able to relate someday! :)

(Fully knowing that if I was the campground host, it wouldn't bother me a bit!) I'm not great at calling for advice - when I busted my lip in canada, I texted because I hate to bother people, then drove myself to the ER. 🤷‍♀️ I love good hot breakfast, and will ride though 20-30 miles of trails to a small town not to miss a good breakfast! You'll probably learn how to read the weather in time. Sometimes you'll have to slow down or speed up to avoid adverse weather. There's lots to learn. Common sense helps in a big way. But even then one can get cought with your paints down. ( Just a figure of speech ) LoL. Thanks for your video. I do enjoy watching them... Keep doing what your doing.... Be safe out there.

Riding in the rain is wonderful right up until you get wet and cold, fatigue setting quickly - been there! You really have a particularly marvelous way of presenting your travels - nicely done! This comment in itself will pretty much answer the end screen crew question. There is no one for me to call for advice, so I don't. I just evaluate my situation and decide what I am going to do. At nearly 57 and partially disabled I may have decided to go the motel route on this one. Thanks Amanda for being so completely awesome and for sticking this out. I would not have been disappointed had you decided to motel it, but I will admit this was much more entertaining and educational. See you in August, rain, shine or even wet clothes!! RMR FTW!

Unfortunately, my mentor who would accept a collect call from me anywhere on the continent (that dates me lol) has passed away. I think he still guides me in difficult situations. Been up thru the Gorge once, in 2008, Portland to Ritzville that day on my long way back home. Surviving the worst days gives one stories. This is a great example for beginners to not pack it in with a little adversity. I can laugh now at the cold, wet rides and the freezing nights. One appreciates how good even a bad coffee (or tea) tastes at the end of such rides.

I actually kinda like riding in the rain - with the proper gear, and not hours upon hours of it. And not windy too. But I also know how hard it is to start out on a ride knowing that it is going to be raining. Choosing the chance of being wet and cold versus the guarantee of being warm and cozy sounds like a choice that has a default answer. But what we are looking for is the experience.
Stay safe, and don't hesitate to be a minor bother to someone when it means a significant difference in your comfort and safety. I've been there (in that type of circumstance) multiple times, and made the same decisions you did. Taking myself out of the equation, it's easier to see the better option.
End Q: My ex. She knows me better than anyone else.
Optional end Q: I haven't been riding for breakfast. I like to eat shortly after waking. But now I'm thinking I'm missing opportunities to ride, and experience different things. I've just today been able to schedule my c-19 vaccines, so hopefully dining out and meeting people will become easier soon.
I went on a three hour round trip ride in the cold and wind yesterday. I tried to stop for lunch in the middle, but their dining room was closed. They had take out, but I didn't want to eat in the wind, so I ate when I got back home.

I call my buddy Mike or my wife :-) she is amazing. I have to at least have a snack and a bit of coffee before riding too far or I am pretty cranky (-: I’m super glad you switched camp sites. peace

Despite the weather it looked like a great location. I don’t call anyone for wisdom, I’m a stubborn know-it-all hahah. I once rode an hour for breakfast, it was the first place I found open! I see you have a lane sharing bill just gone through committee in Oregon. I hope it goes through, it is a sheer luxury to have when the traffic comes to a stop for whatever reason.

I have my bike packed up for camping and now waiting for the wind to die down. Wind all night in a tent is no fun. At least it is dry and warm here though. Loved watching your windy adventure and the inspirational pep talk is what I needed to hear. Loved it... thank you!

Stellar as always! Doing things outside your comfort zone is how you get better. That's how we all improve. Who do I call when I need encouragement? That would be my wife. She would tell me if I was doing something stupid! I also refer to other pearls of wisdom that I picked up in life. If you look at something that's causing you a problem, think of how minuscule the amount if time is out of your whole life. You can't go back and undo experience, just learn from it.

Hi Amanda! Every time you talk about your Rumpl blanket I get thrown off. My dog's name is Rumple! haha
I call nobody for wisdom. Not sure why I don't cause I'm not very smart about motorcycles, camping, and especially how far to ride for breakfast! Oregon route 5 series - Rode like 40 miles offroad, got a little lost, rode down a very very steep hill to get to Sumpter for...let's call it brunch! haha

This video made me turn on the heater under my desk and now I'm going to make tea. I have no one to call who will actually provide wisdom and not just echo my own doubts. I have to have some kind of breakfast or my blood sugar will crash. However, I'm always up for "second breakfast" at a nice place where the waitress calls me "honey".

The most adverse conditions often make the best memories - I remember the frozen nights more so than the times with perfect weather over the years, and the fires we built to keep warm - the best memories.

Curiosity piqued: why call your mom when your father and brother both ride? They don't eat breakfast? As for how far I'd ride for breakfast, and if I'm riding long haul, the distance to the nearest truck. I can wash and/or dry clothing or stuff there while I eat breakfast. The wifi connection is usually strong in truck stops. Or even take a quick shower if need be. A "one stop shopping" breakfast location.
