You might be wondering why I'm covering Paranoid.Haven't you already done it? Well, yes, but that's not the end of the story. I have covered it, but I'm not happy with my cover. It wasn't my playing that was the issue, but the video production. It just looks bad. The tab has too much white space, there's no ghost measure to lead in to the next part on top of the scrolling that isn't a clean transition. The video is dark and weirdly colored. I'm looking kind of weird too, and then the plain wall with the heat spot doesn't help either. All of this is combined with not really being able to hear my playing at all, and everything just slightly out of sync from the other elements (tab, song, bass playing, & video of me).
There's a lot wrong with the video, and I want to fix that by replacing the video with one I'm proud of, rather than just removing the cover altogether. I could do that, but for those who want to learn the song through me, I don't want to take away what I've already done. I can also use this as a chance to tweak the tab to be more accurate (though it's pretty good to begin with).
Generally the bpm is between 162 to 167 with a little bit of variance
Live, Geezer also plays it a little different than the studio version. He often adds the 7-9-7-9 bit in wherever he feels like
The song was also used in Guitar Hero, but not the studio version/master. There is a recording of Metallica & Ozzy playing it that was used though.
    • BLACK SABBATH - "Paran...
Mimed, but Geezer is using a P-bass with fingers (as expected)
1:49 - shows his right (plucking) hand playing over the neck
Shows general positioning all throughout (middle of neck)
    • BLACK SABBATH - "Paran...
Geezer using fingers and a P/J bass
    1:14 - bar 12
2:04 - Bridge, different from studio, but that part is used elsewhere. Individual plucks per note
2:51 - shows it clearer (after solo bridge)
    2:57 - same
    3:20 - bar 90 positioning
    3:27 - bar 94
    • Video
Not a P-bass, but one of his standard basses. Looks like a Peavey?
0:17 - good shot of Geezer in the opening verse
    • Geezer Butler of Black...
1:48 - Geezer slides in 21 for the arpeggio that's in bar 22
    • Black Sabbath - "Paran...
0:31 - plucking hand disappears out of shot, but appears to play bar 21 all 8th notes (no slide like previous video)
1:37 - changes from the studio version (improvisation)
    • BLACK SABBATH - "Para...
0:19 - initial slide happens. too fast to see detail
    • Black Sabbath feat. Oz...
    1:12 - the octaves at bar 35
1:53 - part of solo w/ one instance of beat 4
    • BLACK SABBATH - "Para...
    Not mimed, fingers, p bass
    0:41 - shows verse & bar 28-30 (no hammer-on)
    2:08 - no slide for bar 89
It was cool finding videos of Metallica playing it with Ozzy, Black sabbath playing it with dio and another with Phil Collins on the drums.
    Thanks for watching! Enjoy :)

In my experience, I’ve learned to never underestimate a song. Especially when it appears easy. Those songs are easy to make mistakes or hard to play well because other skills come into play

Thank you very much for another instructive and informative video. I sorry to see that you know a lot allowed to post your tabs for the time being.
Response to one of your other videos I'm probably mentioned that I think I play base reasonably well but the problem for me is always to learn and remember what I need to play. Not just bad hearing but I really have a really useless musically.
I struggle to read tabs but with video on tabs I can usually get there.
With the video without tabs it's not so easy and with tabs without a video it's not easy.
I need to write a blue song about this to blue song about this😁

Ayo bro. Bass battle. You and me. Also for a suggestion, how about Stevie Ray Vaughn: Pride and Joy. Rock on brother.

  • @absolutebeginnerbass8401

Hi Sam, I'm relatively new to playing, Paranoid is one of my targets so this is a great help, thanks.
One part I really struggle with are the two little runs on CGC DAD. I could make those ok if they were coming back towards me by raking up, but going away I find it more difficult. I can sort of play it with a pick, but I can't octave across three strings fast enough in the other section.
Any advice you could offer to work on?
    Cheers
    Steve

Hi Steve. I wish I had some good advice or trick that’d help with that section, but really the only advice I have this time is to practice it, but also keep playing and gain experience and it’ll become easier in time. Kings and Queens by Aerosmith also has a similar section in it (more challenging for the fretting hand though). Switch 625 also has a similar part in the guitar, that’d be easy to play along with
