Great video, very well done. There are couple things I would like to add.
The arrow is on the overlay so you don't lay it on the pipe up side down. The RT technician should be able to give you some idea of the depth and size of the weld defect.
Since the most common location of defects is in the start of the weld welders should always try to stagger their starts and stops. If you are making a weld repair such as this it's difficult to alter your start point. In a case such as this you can tack a strip of flat bar (tab) to the pipe just below the excavation strike off on this tab and carry the weld in to the repair. Once you are close to finishing cut the tab off and complete the repair. Nothing worse than having the repair fail due to cluster porosity at the start location. Of course a welder should always strike off in the weld zone and move the electrode to the weld start position to warm the electrode up before actually forming a bead but with repeated beads in a concentrated area there is greater risk of defects such as porosity and inclusions being concentrated from all starts.

Something really important when you're preparing the section for repair with your grinder. Pay attention to how he blended the cut section back to the surface of the cap with his grinder - nice and gradual slope. You don't want any deep cuts that aren't well blended with the grinder, that can lead to lack of fusion right in the deep corners of your cut area and you'll have another failure on the x-ray.

Awesome vid. Thanks for this, I learned how to repair a pipe weld, seriously having been certified on 6g my instructors were all about doing it right the first time... And not having to repair your work so they didn't spend much time on this sort of thing. They basically taught us to just grind and reweld. But this is good information thank guys😁👍🇺🇲👍😁

This is a great video. As an x ray guy, they may reshoot it to see if you got it out. Sometimes you PT or MT it as well. 80% of the time, the welder is going to be told to find it, fix it, and weld it up. Then I will shoot it again and hopefully it passes. So for any of the young bucks out there making weld repairs, good luck . Welds go down . You weld long enough you will fail something. It doesn’t mean you are a bad welder. Some shit just happen and thats all. Learn from it. I just fucked up two shots last night. Then I had to go back and reshoot it again. Everyone fucks up.

Ut has its benefits over rt in some cases because we can tell the welder the exact depth, length, and location marking it out clearly on the pipe . You can’t get depth with RT Like you can with UT. After the weld is excavated we can use MT to check for some remaining defects such as the remaining ends of a crack which can’t be seen easily by the naked eye . Great video btw

Over 1000 xrays in and never had a hitch. More than a few times I've had them re-angle the source because of shadowing though.
Had a grand ol time repairing mistakes by others though. Honestly if I feel like something didn't go right on a pass I stop and grind. What is an extra 10 minutes compared to the time lost if the techs see a piece of slag in the middle of the bevel.

A good x-ray tech should be able to get you close. That don’t mean all of them though, chased some stuff all the way down that wasn’t there, such as: hi/lo called lof on the bead, undercut on stringer cap (in between stringers) called undercut or lof on the bead; I’ve had one come back to say there were like 7 bad ones from burn thru and I was running hots that day 🤦🏻‍♂️. After “fixin” two of them and not seein anything that should of been low, I asked for the overlay (they were already marked on the line); it turned out that he was callin burn thru on all the welds that had low spots on the caps.
