the Seagull was the first play in the history of the theater dealing With the ordinary people and Their ordinary feelings. There are no Heroes nor Big tradegies.
just everyday people With Their High and lows. at the same time it's a play about a search and somtimes calling for a higher meaning. - quite human. like the author
that's why it was boohed out at the first performance, but has been triumphant ever since!

When I saw Seagull in film .. I could tell right off it was revolutionary... it seems so present day but written... 1896. .. I know nothing of plays

A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen was the first. Chekhov was just a tad after

The 'ordinary people' in The Seagull are Yakov, 'The Maid', 'The Cook', who have probably half a page of dialogue between them, if that. I love The Seagull, but it's not about ordinary people, it's about the boredom and insecurities of the privileged.

I’m reading a bio of Chekhov without reading anything by him except the 5 novellas... much towards the end of the book, I ordered the Seagull with Annette Bening... in the dialogue, I could see Chekhov’s life float by in the film ... was weird experience..

pfft "the seagull was the first play with characters that have nuanced emotional journeys." I was there for everything else but that was a major eyeroll.

I was gonna say, these themes are as old as medieval or maybe even pre-Roman times. Modern people just like to think everything is new.

@@DarkAngelEU Maybe the first play that isn't about aristocrats' emotional journeys. These people are all well-off but not aristocrats, which was a big deal in 1900.
