- Watch Lucky Daye play "Roll Some Mo", "Misunderstood" and
"Late Night" at the Tiny Desk.
May 28, 2019 | Sidney Madden -- Sometimes, a Tiny Desk is just meant to be. NPR Music's Bobby Carter and I have been checking for Lucky Daye since last year when we dubbed him one of the "Kings of R&B." Then, after seeing Lucky perform live in Washington D.C., we knew his charisma and control, even for a new name, would translate well to the Tiny Desk. The same week we saw him live for the first time, we knew he was ready for the challenge.
Hailing from New Orleans and inheriting a love of sticky, bass-bumping funk early on, Lucky wanted to bring the full flavor of his debut album, Painted to NPR. So he brought along a 10-person band, including a quartet of horns, and his go-to producer Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II on bass. Like the record, which incorporates bouncy pop, a light, wallowing nod to jazz and show-stopping soul (notice the dramatic pause of the beat during the final song, "Late Night"), Lucky took the vibe of the Tiny Desk from chill to rowdy within the span of 15 minutes. He even let the audience in on a secret: "I've never performed that song in front of anyone with a band," he said, trying to laugh off mid-set jitters and bask in the moment. "This is amazing, y'all. I'm really grateful."

Oh yes! The horns section is amazing!
Lucky is the epitome of a black man. His skin...his smile....his hair....his cheekbones....his lips....his aura....his swag....his voice...his essence. It is truly that of a sensitive black man. Thank you so much, brother. For giving us your intimate thoughts through song. Thank you for giving us good, real music. THANK YOU! This made my morning at work today!!
The epitome? Of...every black man; like ALL black men?
Like, like black men in the UK to the remotest villages of Africa and South America, across the oceans to every island?
Rich black men, poor black men ... educated, uneducated?
Black men of mixed races and adjacent cultures, too?
Lucky Daye? Okay... ...was just asking?
@@agapeluv nope man you have to understand the context "or better misunderstood"
@@agapeluv yes yes yes yes
That is a nonsensical statement
Why can't he be a black man vs placing sensitive black man? I get your opinion, but he could be thoughtful, then it brings me to think about black men n general and black men comes with different levels of depth just like a woman. Peace Queen
Bruh he's 34, my guy is looking like he's 18 out here at 34 years old

It's that youthful male energy, so precious 😍
He's in his 30s tho. That's still young I guess but just sharing because I thought like early 20s he's so...pure

I love his vulnerability. When a man can express his sensitive side it's a beautiful thing.
Read it again: WHEN A MAN CAN EXPRESS HIS SENSITIVE SIDE ITS A BEAUTIFUL THING!!!!!
It's not the vulnerability... it's him (or ANY black man to be honest) TRUSTING "you" enough to share his true feelings/weaknesses. One can feel vulnerable but still reserved and protective. 😉
But he also plays with it a bit. :) Comibined with his cute looks he knows he's melting thousands of hearts in the audience.

And whoever engineers these "Tiny Concerts" is awesome. Recording studio levels and the right mic selection. Shotguns and vocals totally tight sound, for an office space...I'd love to see a vid on how they set all of this up.
