- If you're like most people, Africa in general is a pretty foreign land to you. And you might be thinking of visiting Cape Town in South Africa, but are concerned with whether it is safe, considering that a lot of folks have heard about the crime levels in the city.
We spent about a week and a half in Cape Town, and we can tell you that the tourist parts you plan to visit are indeed safe. We can also tell you, after talking with many locals, that the city bowl downtown area is not what we'd call "safe."

It has absolutely nothing to do with under funding...it has everything to do with the fact that SAPS is totally corrupt and dangerous. Never call them if you are white and in trouble.

This comment is so ridiculously unintelligent that it's painful. The very definition of sensationalist alarmism above, ladies and gentlemen. What on earth would farm murders have to do with Cape Town? The affected farms were, in general, very far from Cape Town city bowl, and not at all indicative of the experience to expect within Cape Town. It's akin to talking about New York by referring to Jersey City crime statistics. Please understand the political underpinnings of the comment above. This type of rhetoric is associated with a particular (ridiculous) political ideology that posits that South Africa is 'reverse racist' and that whites are in some way targeted (despite the actual balance of resources in the country being precisely the opposite). This ideology is would be the 'Trump supporter' of South Africa.
Your safety in SA has a lot to do with the way you carry yourself. I'm a 120kg 6'2 Afrikaner, recently visited Cape Town, the streets are MINE when I go on a walk. Africa isn't and has never been for sissies, and the OP picked up experience from the incident, he might not agree but he is better off for it. Dit is al wat ek wil se.

And before you bs me and call me white, I'm full middle eastern and live in a small racist white town, but I can also be racist towards them. Don't act smart when you don't even know that. Also, its an internationally known fact that SA has a high crime rate, in many European countries the embassy even recommends to never take the train if you visit SA as a foreigner, never have high valuables visible, if in a suspicious place act normal etc. You can't deny statistics.

@@silasbishop3055 I'm from South Africa and I lived in Baltimore for 10 years. Yes Baltimore is still way safer than Capetown especially in the suburbs and downtown, as long as you avoid the inner city. In Capetown it makes no difference. So you don't know what you talking about.
@@silasbishop3055 It's not "culture" anywhere. Desperate people anywhere engage in criminal conduct. It doesn't matter if it's Baltimore, Cape Town, or Kansas City or Huntsville Alabama. It also doesn't matter the color. I've seen criminals come in all stripes. Sometimes it's because they're desperate and don't see any other way, some times it's just because it's who they are --criminals.

Yes, I went to nearby Dunkin Donuts near my hotel immediately after Sunset. I was shocked that most shops closed including Dunkin. It was very scary experience when you see men standing on the sidewalk of streets and keep approaching you and one tried to rob me then second one approached me after short walk and had to run away. I thanked God for getting back to hotel safely. I noticed this danger always after dark as told by people including hotel staff that not safe to walk after dark

Cape Town is safe! It’s as safe as anywhere else in the world
Cape Town is generally safe for tourists especially in the popular beach/residential areas. Walking around during the day is quite safe. I have lived in Cape Town for 10 years and nothing has ever happened to me when I have been walking. Just don’t flash your expensive items as someone may mugg you. However I don’t recommend walking at night unless you have no choice to as there is an increased risk of something happening to you. Even though the murder rate is very high in Cape Town, most of the murders take place in the townships and not the suburbs, so it is very unlikely you will get murdered or attacked if you stay away from those areas.
I don't know why you have so many dislikes. I'm a local and you're spot on. Even the "nice" areas have a lot of physical barriers and preventative safety measures. Don't drop your guard - you can never be too safe in South Africa. If you are street smart and stick to the better areas and do not flash valuables around - you'll probably be fine. Unfortunately, it seems to be a trend for them to attack tourists (especially Europeans and Americans) , as tourists commonly let their guard down and they are known to carry valuables.
Probably because while it's true that Cape Town isn't safe, as well as most of South Africa. That's also very true of many parts of the US. The US is hardly THE example of crime free and safe now is it? Plenty of their large cities have crime problems, and areas that are best avoided.

If you need to have a knife with you in your own house while watching tv, then the city definitely isn't safe, and no further explanation is needed.
This is very strange. To me. Where you need security everywhere to make it "safe". YES this city is obviously pretty dangerous!
South Africa's apartheid legacy has left it with a particulary complex and racially charged socio-economic situation. The minority white population have a much higher average standard of living and tend to live apart from the general population because although all races are theoretically equal it is overwhelmingly not fiscally feasible for them to purchase in the more preferred areas creating visible disparity and segregation. Having racially charged wealth inequality in a country where the average income is already low is bound to end in crime

I had 20k worth of equipment, stolen from me in Cape Town out my car boot. I had my radio stolen x3 times separate occasions in Cape Town. I had a sharpened screw driver pull out on me in Cape Town while on the train. My friends have had stuff stolen from them many times. I've had a knife pulled out on me in Stellenbosch. Again many times in Stellenbosch had my car broken into. Have had two group attack incidents where I had to punch people to get away.
There is no more Law in South Africa.
White Dutchman here. Am in cape town for work. Love the city! Beautiful country but dangerous indeed. Yesterday night a guy comes to me with a knife and attempts to rob me. I got away by running very hard

Just a correction the government doesn’t direct funding to the security companies citizens pay for private security from their own pockets.

Grew up in Joburg and moved to Cape Town. Got robbed 3 times there in 7 years, twice by gunpoint. One guy pulled the trigger but his gun jammed so he clubbed me with the gun. "Safe" is relative. Still Cape Town is not as dangerous as Joburg.
SA has Vietnamese? When did your parents arrive? I come from Berlin (with SA roots) where we have a huge Vietnamese community.
I've been robbed at least 30 times in Cape Town. It depends on the area. It helps to live somewhere that has at least one or two literate policeman.

I met a Female traveller in Tanzania. She drove solo all over Africa, sleeping in her car. Then when she got to Pretoria and parked in a locked carpark and stayed in a hotel.....her car got stolen 🤷🏻♂️
Been robbed so many times, and think Tourists are very naive when visiting here. Most of the city is a no go zone as the sun starts to set.

I carry when I'm in SA, been useful more than once. shoot first, ask questions later, and never call the police.
Well we were told the police won't do much (or even show up) if you did call them, so yea, you have to be prepared to protect yourself I guess.
It's been illegal to carry in SA for many years now. If you shoot first then call the police, you'll be in a lot of trouble.

@@BottomLineUpFront I agree, it's beautiful, but I think it's important to not downplay to very real dangers that exist, because that lulls tourists into a false sense of security, and that can put them in harms way.
Maybe some locals that deny the fact that it is dangerous forget that if you were born there or live there for a long time you automatically give of another vibe making it safer for you than for tourists. I live in one of the most dangerous places in Germany( still no comparison to SA) and never anything happened to me, but in your own city you move with purpose and confident, so you dont become the target as easy.
It sounds even worse than south side of Chicago. Even Oakland is safe for a legally blind guy like me who can not recognize people beyond five feet. I really want to come to Cape Town. Maybe I will sign up with an organized tour of the region. Oh my god!
its a bit hit or miss. ive been there a dozen or so times. my dad has been robbed aswell as my grandparents( they are locals)

If you want to go to the beach when you're there, go with a few people and go to Boulders or one of the Cape Point beaches. These are beaches you can't get to without paying - so you're less likely to have your belongings stolen when you leave them on your towel to go for a swim.

I always carry gun when I'm in Kaapstad or Johannesburg. Idiot pulls a knife, I just show m the gun and they're gone. Only had to take it out of the holster once.

Sorry, your country has the 4th highest crime index of any country in the world. Cape Town specifically has moved between 9th and (currently) 15th highest murder rate city in the world. These are statistics, hard to argue with. Yes, America is dangerous too and some of our cities have even higher murder rates (St. Louis).
@@BottomLineUpFront You've made a mistake here. The statistics come from the wider city area, covering this vast city and some dodgy estates you'll never visit but where drug crime is rife. But the crime in the city centre is not nearly so bad - and I happily walk around on my now, even at night sometimes. For sure, you don't carry obvious signs of wealth like a camera or expensive phone. I'm 63 now. In 35 years, I've never been mugged.

Jburg there is too much robbery but its not usually all the time that someone gets stabbed....but in capetown if you walk to the wrong neighborhood when its after around 7 then be ready for anything

Hope you guys know better locations now, other than cbd/town. I wouldnt advise any group of tourists to go to town without some local friends. You guys would stick out like a sore thumb in specific areas there.
Hopefully you guys have made some good local friends here. There's a lot of fun and beauty outside town. It's just not as advertised compared to the likes of V&A and Long - maybe for the better lols. Maybe rather let your local friends be your guide.

I get mixed signals from people about Cape Town’s safety. Some people say it’s safe and some people don’t. At this point I don’t know who to believe.
We made this video just to give people a heads up, we loved Cape Town but wish we’d known about the safety before we went. We’ve been twice now, it’s an awesome city, you just have to be careful about your surroundings. The city knows of the problem, they are working to improve.
I lived in cape town for ten years and never experienced such security issues.

Yeah, some Capetonians and South Africans get really embarrassed /defensive when you state the irrefutable truth that law and order has all but collapsed throughout much of the country. They would like to think they live in a first-world western outpost below the equator but it's all artifice. At least it is now. Cape Town is insulated to a degree i.e. the predominantly white middle-class enclaves which tourists frequent, but it absolutely is not representative of the city or country as a whole. To suggest otherwise is extremely disingenuous and dangerous. TBH the collapsing power grid and soon to follow water system is what is likely to deter tourists more than anything else.

The issues in South Africa are complex. First, we have a government that is more interested in enriching the members of the ruling ANC while the sizeable working-class majority live in dire poverty. This poverty and desperation, caused largely by corruption and unemployment (literally the highest in the world at 29%), ultimately aggravate the crime rates here. I love South Africa, it is the home of my heart, no matter where I might be, but I fear it will take a long time before the people of this country finally vote the ANC out of power. I fear, however, that even if they vote them out, the parties in SA are too weak and lack the know-how to turn things around. If we could turn our economy around and have good, honest governance, this country would be the greatest on the African continent.
After 29 years it is high time the ANC was kicked out of power in South Africa.

@@reogreen444 I got back home yesterday from a 2 week trip in cape town and garden route, you need to know how to move around there. It was a wonderful place and I absolutely loved the views and there are a lot of really kind people there. Being respectful, not travelling by anything other than rental car or uber (until about like 9pm) and overall just not acting like a dumb ass tourist will get you very far.
However if you are still scared places like Knysna are very safe and amazing as well to visit. Garden route is absolutely lovely and the feeling of safety was nearly always there for me.
Bare in mind, i'm from a small town in the Netherlands (by far one of the safest countries out there in europe) so knowing the info i got from my brother who currently studies in Stellenbosch I did not come in there unprepared and oblivious to the many dangers the country has.

I'm from Cape Town, I've never watched TV with a knife next to me, I've never driven with a blanket covering me or my possessions, I've never had to set the security system just to sit in my house and I've never been robbed, mugged, held at gun point or threatened with a knife. Yes there are definitely sketchy areas and you need to be more aware in these places, perhaps a little more cautious, but ignorant videos like this one paint a picture that is completely different to what Cape Town is actually like. And locals would be more than willing to tell you about places to avoid and some much less intense safety tips to know while moving about Cape Town.

i visited the mother city a year ago. can't wait to come back!!! spent almost a week alone. was out until 11pm almost every day. Not a single problem.

Guys it’s safe here in Cape Town, just don’t walk around at night (take Uber not just any cabs and lock your car doors when entering the Uber!!! And watch out when your cab/car stops at random red lights at night).
Don’t trust anyone and let them guide you somewhere (you might get robbed!!). Carry a weapon (100%!! Every day).
It’s safe here you just have to know how to live here. Stay in the busy street and only stay outside in day time in busy safe locations.
The gangs will shoot you down like a dog at night! THEN check your pockets while your laying dead on the street.

Maybe its because of my "Coloured" appearance, but I did not experience any issues as a tourist walking the streets of various affluent and less affluent Cape Town neighbourhoods completely on my own with cash in my pockets? Should I have been more cautious?
never heard anything safe about Cape Town and judging by heavy security, carjacking etc it will definitely be a big no-no for me, how can you enjoy your holiday having to look over your shoulder, no thanks!
South Africa has gone down the drain. Cape Town is one of the safest cities in South Africa. If you don't think you're safe in CT, you obviously haven't been in Johannesburg
Just came back from a 2 week trip from cape town and i can confirm from stories that i heard from locals that joburg and durban are a lot worse. Only travelled by rental car or uber during the day and did not go outside after a certain hour unless it was in camps bay or waterfront. It is mostly safe if you know how to move, def a weird experience for a Dutch person living in a small town where i can go for a walk at 3am without a single danger.

My three days experience in Cape Town; Witnessed a robbery in downdown middle of the day at an ATM, followed by a gang at Waterfront during evening, a security guard calmed the situation down.. to then be attacked by an aggressive taxi driver which threatened to shoot the guard too. I'd say all places in that city become sketchy as soon as it's dark. We got to learn a nice taxi driver and he just told us to not move outside after like 9PM. I liked the mountain and all, and some areas in the town, like some large park with tame squirrels etc, but this crime issue is way too large.
That’s exactly what we were told, just don’t go outside after dark, unless it’s just a few meters to a restaurant or something.

When we visited the second time, the official Capetown City Guide book from 2018 was on the coffee table. We thought “great!” and started reading it. Literally the first page was about safety: it said tourists we not recommended to WALK AROUND with money or cameras. Like seriously, what guide book by the city officials puts out info to tourists to not walk around with cameras!? That’s what tourists do!! But the city officials know the risks. Deny all you want, but facts don’t lie.

I wish we could speak about other cities in SA, but we’ve only been to Stellenbosch, which is about 45 min away and seemed much much safer.
As for the feel and infrastructure, very modern and built up, we loved the city, same amenities as a big city in the US but half the cost 😎
The security isn't good service is poor.But Capetonians have extreme pride over their city.They feel embarrassed about the crime stats so that's why They make Johannesburg look bad.Most people of the city look down on the rest of South Africa.Even Durban is seen as rural.They think Johannesburg is the only other city in South Africa.
Most Westerners are used to? This comment is odd to me given the large number of sketchy places in Western countries. I'm curious is the East side of Chicago safe? Or South Central LA? How about a whole bunch of places in the US deep South or Detroit? Are these places safe and non sketchy for the average person to walk around?
Now I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "westerners" because that's such a broad term and it's often not clear who is being referred to. Does it include Americans? Because I would think lots of Americans are used to crime in certain parts of their country. Or how about the Swedes who have the highest gun crime and rape rates in Europe? How about Londoners with the knife 🔪 crimes and acid attacks that have happened a lot over the recent past. Are these westerners?
Is Cape Town safe? No. As a Capetonian I would say no. But I do just find that statement weird.
I will never say never, but we have travelled from the UK to SA every year, for the last 20 years, we have never been the victims of crime. Funnily, I would say I felt more alarmed about my safety in Detroit, than Cape Town. Just need to be cautious, and always remember, Cape Town is the best city in the world, but realise, It's still Africa.

Got robbed in Johannesburg on day one with fire inside hotel and went very careful in Cape Town

We didn't spend much time in J-burg, but we did hear that it's a whole different ballgame than Capetown.

My limited experience in CT gave me the feeling that when it gets dark only the waterfront area Northwest from Radison red is fairly safe to walk to a restaurant. Outside of this area, I felt only safe going by Uber to the door of restaurant, and then scanning before getting out who is at the street. This was 2 years ago

I stay in cape town and its funny how everyone just talk about our crime😂when we are also one of the most beautiful cities, just you need to know the places and know when to b alert and when u dont have to be.....wish i couldve showed you places you will never see in another country....

Yes crime does happen depending where u are and if alone then u could be a target just like in any other country in the World. Similar crimes occur in the USA. Just read any USA newspaper. But the danger you know in your own country is less scary than the danger you don't know in a foreign country.
