  • This a very fun demonstration showing the very fast crystallization of supersaturated sodium acetate solutions. Watch as we pour a solution on the desktop and instead of making a mess, a column of crystals begins to grow.

Thanks for making a boring topic fun, we need more people like you :) plus I loved your lab coat

Neat lesson on entropy. Never thought about it that way.

Looked up your video bc a company called WonderPax at the MoA sold me some hand warmers with sodium acetate in them. I click a coin the in pouch and it makes the solution crystallize and v warm. I haven’t tried them in winter yet but they stay warm for about an hour so I’m hopeful. Plus they’re reusable if I boil them. They also had pads that wrap around your back and shoulders but I didn’t get those

slef-note: gibbs free energy = Enthalpy - Temp*entropy. Since liquid turns to solid, the entropy is positive. Temp in Kelvin is always positive. since the reaction is spontaneous, the Gibbs energy is negative in value.
Hence, by analysing the signs of each factor in the equation (+ or -) we know the Enthalpy must be very very negative
