Breaking the social norm of how we walk, go down stairs, ride escalators, and even greet people in traffic. Done as a research project for my high school sociology class. i hope you enjoy it :D
This is really an appealing and hilarious act! Our teacher actually show us this to teach us what social norms are. Now that i know what it is and maybe i can pluck up courage and try it out so thanks for sharing. Your project is surely awesome!
Woah watching this in 2020! Totally awesome video, really good at demonstrating how easy it is to prove the norms we have in a fun way. Love the bit at the end with the guy and the glasses, brilliant stuff!
absolutely! for my class the video was mostly to see what kinds of reactions other people had when coming face to face with broken norms. while it's fun to just goof around, we were really looking to see how other people dealt with the discomfort of an unusual behavior. most people turn a blind eye, but as you saw some laugh at the "oddity" of it, while a small group played along, like the girl who walked with us or the guy who waved. but yeah we were looking at other's reactions to the norms :)
that was so funny. no idea how you did all that with a straight face. i would crack up laughing. i have to do a social norms experiment too, and i think i got some ideas from you guys, so thank you. :)
Hi Rachel, We're restructuring our preceptor workshop in our network. I'm working on the socializer role of the preceptor. Part of that work includes helping new preceptors to recognize and share social norms on the unit so that the new orientee can better adjust. For example - get out of that chair - don't you know that only the secretaries sit there? I foresee using you sliding down the stairs (love that!) and maybe some of your funny random walking :). Thanks for sharing!
Ok so I reallllly liked this video of breaking social norms the BEST and I have watched A LOT. Amazing job and hilarious! Truly let go and didn't care what others though. Hope you got an A!
lol this made me giggle so much and I watched your video for a paper I have to do in my sociology class ant VCU!!! im in my senior year !!! Thank you is much !!
They did sociology in HS 12 yrs ago? Mind blown - ok so i know this video is old- but it was good! Thought youd dig this; my idea 💡 for breaking norms for a college soc. course that was a bit more interactional- so shopping somewhere like target or walmart, and shop out of other ppl's carts.. haha! Mumble to yourself hmm yeh i do need one of these.. (gets their attention) and they'd say like, excuse me thats not a stock cart thats mine & depending on their face/tone of voice I say "Oh well thats okay- it's still new, I like it anyway", or "Knock hello? It isn't yours until you pay at the register" and proceed to put it in your cart, then they might say something like "well thats WAY over other side of the store" and i'd say "Oh well great! Then you know where to find it!" And then it gets a little ugly and then you explain that its a prank and reveal the cameraperson, and ask if you can use it just for your class, not online (hence why my video isnt up) just thought id share cuz those kind of experiments are def a lot of fun! Breaking common courtesy; unfortunately ppl do it all the time
hi Laura! i'm so flattered that you'd like to use part of my video for your workshop, you absolutely have my permission. I'm just curious, but which part do you plan on using? (also if you're doing credits/sourcing my name is Rachel Slovak, youtube names always look a little silly as sources haha) good luck with your workshop!!
Hi FrizbeeChique77! I'm wondering if you would mind me using part of your video for a part online and part live workshop to help explain social norms? I love adding humor to classes that I teach, and I think your video would be awesome! Great project. Thanks so much for considering my request. Have a good day :)
Lol, I do stuff like this for fun! Ex. Now that I'm in college, I do a lot of stuff involving elevators: sitting in the elevator, facing away from the door, standing right up against the door, facing the corner, making faces, and striking a pose before the door opens! :D
I have a question, a few questions actually. How long until you felt comfortable doing that? Do you care what others think about you disregarding close family? What guided you to this sort of thinking? Do you feel that not caring affects your life in a negative way at all? I know these questions are personal however I can see that you have a strong grasp of your emotions & I would like to learn from you as I haven't yet, if you would allow me by answering honestly, if possible. In return feel free to ask me anything you want & I will do my utmost to be as forthcoming as possible, & if I can't be for any reason I will say so.

I have to do this for my college soc class and this is giving me ideas!!!
The power of the Norm appears through the disciplines. Is this the new law of modern society? (Michel Foucault, 184)
