  • NASHVILLE, Tenn. - (August 6, 2011) - The Oak Ridge Boys were inducted into the Grand Ole Opry this evening by Opry member Jimmy Dickens. The legendary country music group made up of William Lee Golden, Joe Bonsall, Richard Sterban, and Duane Allen was invited to join the Opry last month by Dickens, who surprised the group by walking on stage dressed as a 4'11" William Lee Golden, including long beard and sunglasses.

    The group was surprised on stage by a video greeting from President George Bush. "I can not think of any group or any person who deserve this honor more," President Bush said, explaining that he'd been an Oak Ridge Boys fan since he first heard the group from inside the White House while they were singing "Elvira" on the White House lawn. "I ran outside like a little kid," he said, "and I've been blessed to call them friends ever since. I think of the Opry and the Oaks both as American icons, beloved from coast to coast and known around the world. I can't think of a better union. I love you boys, and my best to everyone at the Grand Ole Opry, one of my favorite places in America."

    After Dickens presented the members of the group with their Opry member awards, Joe Bonsall spoke first for the group, saying, "We've always been a friend of the Opry. We've always believed in the Opry and loved and respected every member of this brotherhood and sisterhood of country music. We've been nervous wrecks all day long because we knew how special this would be. This is a meaningful night, and is it different tonight than it ever has been when we've come down here to sing? You bet your life it is!"

      My all time favorite group. I could listen to them all day long. I met Richard in 2003 or so in a boot store in Nashville. Very nice, kind, humble man with the best bass voice in the business.

    I have been a fan forever, well since the 1970's . This is so awesome. I used to go to the early 1980 concerts to see Garland play the Piano. What a showman he was. Congats Oak Ridge Boys. In my world the boys never left!!

    To me, this act should've been made a part of the Opry when my favorite member was still in the picture, I love the late beautiful precious Steve Sanders so much! (forever wishing that I had discovered him sooner)
    God bless you and his family always!!!

    I am astounded that it took until 2011 for the Oak Ridge Boys to be officially members of the Grand Ole Opry. I would have thought the group would have been accepted way back in the 1960s while they were still predominantly a religious group and hadn't hit the pop/country charts.

    It's funny... it's almost easy to get agitated when the young child starts making noise as Joe begins to speak... It's like, the Opry is a grown-ups event, and here's a yungin' that's belly achin' when the most important words of the night are to be spoken. Then, when you hear Duane tell that his wife was at the Opry as a 6 month old baby, and now she's a backup singer for the Opry... you gotta wonder... who could that little belly achin' child be in the future? Backup singer for the Opry? Another king/queen of Country Music? Time will tell. But so cool that the child was there to witness our Boys being inducted into the Opry!

    In the early 90s they left MCA records, and signed with RCA, then the guy that signed them left RCA, and his replacement told the OAKs that he did not want to promote Oak Ridge concerts, he wanted to push and promote Alabama, now both are outstanding groups, didn't RCA have enough room for both these big outfits. Shame on RCA, don't know what went wrong with wrong or why they left MCA, but every project with MCA was a hit. Even after Golden Left for several years, they still had hits with MCA.

  • @SilverWolfEnt
    @SilverWolfEnt Před 11 lety +1

    I have to admit that back then I hated Alabama for taking away awards that should have gone to the Boys and yea I also agree they should never had left MCA.

      +Goldslime17 +Jennifer Dolan the oaks are true legends... that is a fact it can be proven they are legends... "skrillex or EDM"is good,is a opinion... it ok to have a different opinion but some thing you should keep to your self... if he would not like that said about him then he should not say it people like him have no idea what talent is...
