I visited Altcar every febuary for the waterloo cup meeting. What a fantastic event it was, Hardly any hares were actually caught the slipper used to give the hares a sporting chance. The conservation work the estate did tp promote hare numbers was remarkable. People thought the hunting ban would help increase hare numbers when infact it has actually reduced hare numbers as they are now considered as pests. Illegal hare coursing has increased. Bring back coursing for the hares sake!!!
i read some comments with interest, some people think because of the hunting act hare populations have gone up when infact it is the reverse, its true that while coursing the hare some do actually get caught by the dog but the object of the coursing was to allow an escape route to allow the hare to escape, and the land was managed to encourage there population to grow now all that has gone due to the hunting act.
ive read the comments with interest as i actualy live localy, and i have to say before the ban was introduced the whole area was very protective of the hare. you could see them everywhere. the local farmers and gamekeepers would protect them as if they were there own animals. yet today its very hard to spot a hare running around the fields near altcar. it seems rather than protecting them, the ban seems to have actualy reduced there numbers. im not a hunter by the way, i just walk localy.

Ay up whirrier ... I've been seeing less and less hares around here ; one of the things that is most against them is when the farmers don't leave aside land for them. They used to do that when they were hunted, but now they plough it up . What i find really worrying these days is the lack of road-kill; if there's nothing on the roads, where is it ? You don't even get flies on your wind-screen anymore...
(hunters) are now no longer there, they have been replaced by shooters. And hares can't outrun a 12 bore that easy...You see hunters love animals to. YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN...!

If that's a fox, I'll eat my head and yours too Mr. Liverpoolalz. xD its a hare. not a bunny. rabbits are more squat and have less ginormous ears and legs.
I find the thing that kills animals the most is technology: cars, construction, clearcutting. People don't realize it's hurting them because they just don't see it. And of course in this case, guns. At least dogs naturally hunt rabbits, so coursing is not so bad. And humans even restrain them, so it's not like they're there just killing all the rabbits mercilessly. Clearcutters? Construction of roads and buildings? I can't say the same for them. Yes, hunters do care about animals =)

are u aloud to hunt them if u are give it a shot i have hunted them be for the are realy fast !! hard to hunt for me ... lol
i only hunt rabbits .177 with air rifles. much more sporting than a normal gun.
