We Cut a Steep Mountain Road with A Mini Excavator

  • Since purchasing our property, in the fall of 2021, we have wanted a way to get our tractor up to the top of our property. The back of our property is at the top of a mountain and can be steep at points. Even, getting up there on foot can be a challenge at times.
We weren't sure if it was possible at first. However, after hiking the ridge line and planning a route, we were pretty confident it could be done.
This fall we had the chance to rent a mini excavator for a week which allowed us to complete several projects that we have been wanting to tackle. Cutting a mountain road was both the most fun and scary of those projects.
No one was hurt in the process, and we now have an awesome mountain road to boot.
I hope you enjoy the video.
It would really mean a lot to us if you would give this video a thumbs up, drop a comment down below and subscribe.

Thank you for sharing your journey. We too have a farm in Hill Hollow and my husband loves making fields.
It looks like you have some really nice soil! Not too many rocks either.
    Your family is lovely.
    God bless you all!

That’s so cool! What do you farm? The soil over there is wonderful and we’re really looking forward to growing things over there. 😊

Awesome! My parents do hay, sheep, and lamas. They have just a few animals now, but at one point they had quite a lot. They’ve talked about getting a few beef animals once the sheep are gone, the sheep are getting quite old now.

Nice road! Please don't forget to make ways for water to drain away from the road or you might get problems with erosion.

Thank you! Water drainage is a big part of what we are working on right now. There are several natural springs on our hill which makes drainage a little bit complicated.

You should put some water bars in,they channel water off the road. Find information under logging best managment practices

      Thank you!
A logger we know was recommending that as well and gave us a book on best management practices. It has been very helpful.

I see why hillside is in the name.

It's hard to really take in the degree the incline(s) are. Where there steep inclines where you wanted the road? Any idea what degree incline it would have been? And were there any precarious places you found rather tough to work on? Thanks, Rick

We did take the path of least resistance up through the woods. However, one spot had me a little worried near some ledge that dropped off pretty steep. Fortunately, some of the rock broke up and made a nice road bed.

Love your channel. I have very similar topography. How do you keep it from eroding with heavy rains?

Thank you! We haven’t had any major erosion issues yet. We are currently in the middle of a pretty big landscaping project for our future build site that involves a lot of swales to help direct the water that comes off the hill. We’re hoping that helps.
