    An absolute miracle of a player. With the amount he drank, I don't know how it's possible for a human being to be head and shoulders above everyone else. In the 1968 European Cup final, players from both sides were exhausted but Best was still full of energy. He won the game for United. Prime example of how physically fit he was, never mind the skill, balance and sheer class that came from him.

    Never was a footballer more aptly named. An absolute genius without equal. Head and shoulders above everyone else. I agree with the choice of music behind this video. I'm 65 years old and this video brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. I was lucky enough to see him play twice. God bless you George Best.

    All time hero - it all seemed so easy for him but I know he must have spent thousands of hours practicing. As graceful as Cruyff, as balanced as Messi and unbeatable for sheer entertainment. When George was playing both sets of supporters went to see one player. From a Leeds fan.

      @@nixxxon18 I think George is better than Messi because the pitch back then rigs your movement and can hinder your balance and despite all of that George can beat 4 players alone plus, the ball was way heavier and gives it harder to control. The tackles were pretty immense back in the day as you would rarely get yellow card even if you cut someone’s legs off but George still took on. If George played in today’s pitch with HyperVenom. He would destroy any defender.
      Now Ronaldo, he became the World’s best for 3 years but then something tragic happened and he wasn’t as good as before, the same goes for George Best. He was the greatest footballer in the world for 3 years but his alcoholism injured his career and wasn’t as good as before. Compare their play styles, Ronaldo was a prodigious goal scorer while George was an artist.
      Johan Cruyff gets an edge over George for being a complete midfielder and a playmaker but I still think George was better because of his unorthodox play style.
      Pele humbled himself and regarded George best as the Greatest football ever and the best footballer he played with
      Maradona was influenced by his childhood hero who is George Best

    Brilliant player. Addicted to this video of Best. First real fut-ball star that transcended the game as a star. The women loved him. All of Europe loved him and he paved the way for many of the star players to follow as icons. He never really recovered from his mother committing suicide back in Ireland. Drink was his balm.

    • @kryzhan
      @kryzhan Před 8 lety +2

      + Marc Kryzhan -- Still probably my favorite soccer video just because contextually it registers a lot with me, ultimately its a sad video, a sad story of absolute wonderful brilliance and the very human struggle to find happiness. Best was one of top 10 football players of all time and just brilliant coming up at a very young age, 18, to play professionally in England. He was 'discovered' in Ireland and for him it was making the lonely and long trek from Ireland to his new home that eventually had him struggle with balancing his brilliance and the pain of life. Read up on his life story to get a better grasp of the loneliness he felt moving to a new country, the strangeness of becoming so popular at a young age and then how it created that continuous search for happiness (my take on it) that eventually hurt him. At the age of 18 he was really the first to popularize what it meant to be a true soccer star in Europe. Before that they weren't celebrities like he became. He was the first true soccer star celebrity in Europe historically. And he was just mesmerizing the soccer world at that time. A vulnerable and naive kid that at such a young age was wowing the professionals of the time. His mother's suicide was the thorn that killed his naivety.

    A truly GREAT footballer. He had that spice and bottle to turn it on and be a showman on the football pitch, but also matched it with strength and desire, he simply didn't go over easy like we see from the cheats today, he never gave up with the ball at his feet, and played the game purely as it was meant to be played, hard, but first and foremost, as a sport played by sportsmen, he played the game, and boy, could he f*cking play it! - From a die-hard Liverpool fan.

      Every single generation thinks the way you do. Best played in the era of Franz Beckenbauer and Bobby Moore, two of the greatest defenders the world has ever seen. Also the era of Lev Yashin and Gordon Banks, two of the greatest goalkeepers the world has ever seen. And he didn't have the same protection from violent tackles that todays players have. There were a lot of bad goalkeeper and defenders in the past but there are also a lot of bad defenders and goalkeepers today! And you will no doubt be having the same argument 15 years down the line with some kid who thinks Messi, C Ronaldo and Robben wouldn't cut it in what will then be the modern era.

    • @ringlora2
      @ringlora2 Před 10 lety

      kev smith You are right. I watched full games of Moore in England vs Brazil matches, and he had Pele in his pocket for a whole 90 mins. From what I could tell, no defender today is as good as Moore, he was slow, but very very good at marking and tackling. And people seem to think Pele scored in every game, that is not the case.
      Best was similar to Messi in many ways, he would pass, and on occasion, do what you see in the video. He would only do it in spells, as the manager and players would tell him off. It is this type of video that people judge players ability on, and it is wrong to do so, as this is just the best moments from most of a players career.
      You have to watch more than a few games of them playing to judge better.

    Would love to see Messi try and play with that ball, those boots, on that pitch, taking the kind of tackles Best had to take without the protection of the referee sending off anyone who touches him. Best in the conditions these days would score about 70 goals a season for club alone. Unluckily for him, he came from Northern Ireland (my country) where major success was just qualifying for major tournaments and is now just winning a match.

    • @supersaiyangoku128
      @supersaiyangoku128 Před 10 lety +5

      Fact that he's from the same country as you already indicates bias. Looking at this, I can tell George Best was certainly a great player. In fact his play looks incredibly similar to Messi in the way he feints a lot and it catches a lot of players out. However, the fact that conditions have changed and such doesn't mean one player is better than the other. If that was the case some could argue that the quality of players (particularly defenders) have become a lot better than what they have been. And Messi has taken quite a lot of those dirty tackles. Quite a while back, he used to get hammered by them, hence why he usually walks around the pitch until the ball comes within proximity of him.

    • @iNZSPIRED
      @iNZSPIRED Před 10 lety +6

      Viciouz What do you mean conditions changing means one player isnt better than another? Of course it fucking does, If I can swim through treacle faster than Rebecca Adlington can swim through water then I am a better swimmer than her.

    • @supersaiyangoku128
      @supersaiyangoku128 Před 10 lety +2

      Having a heavier ball doesn't necessarily mean it's harder to control the ball. In fact, for some people it may be the case that a heavier or lighter ball is easier to control or vice-versa. Using that swimming analogy wouldn't be accurate as swimming through treacle would be harder for everyone. Using a heavy/small ball would differ for different people. And I checked over Messi's videos again - I'm sure he's the better player. Especially when people like Pelé think so too.

    • @Dreamsareforreal
      @Dreamsareforreal Před 10 lety +3

      George Best had the ability to become the best!! He got drunk a lot he could of not done that today. I like this era than todays, football today is CRAP. example rules have changed like the offside rule, people not going in for slide tackles as much because seen as dangerous ahahah!! Football is capitalist today!!

    • @supersaiyangoku128
      @supersaiyangoku128 Před 10 lety

      Well, I've seen a couple bad injuries so I reckon its best for the safer option, I'm sure sliding doesn't make that much of an effect in how dangerous people go in for the tackle.

First of all, there was a bigger skill difference between big teams and other teams.Secondly, nowadays' football is way more about athletisicm. And last but not the least, tactics evolved and defenders don't run around like fools (e.g. this video).
      Anyways, Ronaldo can't be compared to Best because they simply don't match. Best = skills, dribbling like Messi. Ronaldo = Athleticism & pace

    He was like messi but better only kids brought up before playstations have this ability now all the greats would play 24/7 growing up because there was only basic cartridge consoles and small tvs, no1 had internet and the only mobiles were bricks, kids now play a little and then go on facebook or console games only those who where there before or when mega drives were around are the last capable of this ability like messi and ronaldo if your born from 92 and upwards you will never surpass the generations b4 u because they have hunger initiative and awareness that seems to have been bred out of you

    George Best was probably the most graceful footballer ever. His sytle was unique, like he was flying over the field. He beat the defenders so easy and clean, seems like he could read their minds. Despite he was mostly used as a winger, he was a top scoarer, unbeatable in one on one, he could orient the game and combine as well as break the defense lines by himself. A true artist. Too bad he was born Irish, he never had the chance to play a world cup.

      You’re a moron. Diving for a penalty like Suárez does regularly and falling down from tackles are two entirely different things. True, Messi does manage to keep dribbling but that has to do with different body types as well. He is way way shorter than Cristiano thus lower center of gravity. Also Ronaldo runs faster (or used to in his winger days) which made him less agile and more prone to hits that threw him off his pace. I agree that Best managed to shake off worse defender physical contact and still managed to keep going but if he wouldn’t, he would not even get the foul, it simply was that kind of era.

    And the surface he was doing all this on was terrible. Imagine what he'd do nowadays with the perfect field conditions modern players have...add in the proper diet, fitness and too class surgery (Best had botched surgery on his knee that left him unable to move freely for the last three or four years (from 23 to 27). It's a major reason he retired so young. His best days were between the ages of 17 to 22...1968 was the end of his peak. Botched knee surgery, as well as alcoholism, declining fitness etc meant he wasnt what he was. Harry Gregg told me all this. In peak condition you could not put a price on him.

Look at that acceleration, tight ball control, balance, strength and all whilst being hacked to death in which modern players would now go down holding their face.
