In this video we will explain the importance of pre-build planning, having a basic architectural layout and physically verifying that your plans match the interior dimensions of your shipping container space. It is vital to complete these steps before making your initial cuts for openings such as windows and doors to avoid potentially costly mistakes during your container home build.

The biggest advantage to using shipping containers for a home is that you can spend your money in increments instead of all at once. You can buy the container and have it placed on your property and then wait and save up to convert it later. Once it's on your property you can buy and store the materials as you can afford them too. That way you don't go into debt and have to pay interest on loans.

Are the steel floor beams always at the same dimensions on containers? If so couldn't you draw up plans using that knowledge?

Could you make a video about the procurement of the container? I have seen on many other videos how you have to be careful with used ones because they dose the floorboards with massive amounts of pesticides that can off-gas, and that the interior paint is also pest resistant and can be toxic. How did you shop for yours and who did you go with for the purchase? Also, how did you transport it? A freight hauling company? An industrial towing company? Thanks and great vids!

If you’re serious about buying containers than it’s best to look into what’s called a “one-time use” container. They are only used one time and are used for harmless things. So you wouldn’t have to worry about dangerous chemicals, rust, etc.

I also am from and live in Minnesota.Years ago I used to work for this company where we installed Styrofoam stucco walls on the exterior of homes and buildings.3 inch minimum with 5-7 inch thick for accent around windows or other areas to create features. Now if you do this you can minimize any insulation for the inside since your insulating your outer walls giving you move interior room.

Amazing and I didn’t quite understand the tip about having the plumbing and elctrical be linear, is that so the lines come out the front if this like the containers door and you just cut a hole for those lines through a no structural part of the door? And do you run those lines through the floor inside, as opposed to cutting a hole in the floor and o run them outside?

@Containing Luxury Hi Blake, I was wondering what your opinion was on exterior insulation? I like the idea of keeping the interior walls as metal for a few reasons, (being able to use magnets to hang pictures, sturdier than drywall and no loss of space) but I'm not certain if I'm not taking any safety considerations into account, or what type of insulation I should use since I have only done interior insulation. Thanks for posting these videos and keep up the good work. (P.S. I'm planning for my container home to be on wheels)

Edmister Enterprises LLC no because in some areas we only used a 1-5/8” stud instead of a 3-5/8” stud, and in some cases like the shower wall because we used a fiberglass liner that gets attached directly to the stud we only have drywall on the outside of the wall so that’s were we got a 2-1/8” wall
