  • HOW TO KNOW IF OXYGEN SENSOR IS BAD TEST OXYGEN SENSOR
If you have engine light due to oxygen sensor we will explain how to test oxygen sensor and know for sure if your oxygen sensor is good or bad. We will explain how to know if upstream oxygen sensor is bad and how to know if downstream oxygen sensor is bad as well. Upstream and downstream oxygen sensors are different and the test will differ. If your oxygen sensor is bad you can experience higher fuel consumption and your car not running as smooth as it should.

The Sensor 1's are what's called a PID feedback circuit, which means it hunts above and below what it wants... the figures are undershooting and therefore it adds fuel, then it overshoots and backs the fuel off, causing it to undershoot again, causing it to add more fuel again, as it oveshoots it reduces the fuel again, repeat. Basically the feedback loop reacts too much and it keeps on adjusting, going above and below what it wants.
I imagine a house central heating system to help me understand.... When the room is cold, the heating turns on, heating the room up but when the temperature overshoots the thermostats set amount, the heater switches off until the room temperature falls back down again. Another example of a PID feedback system is a cars cruise control that's set to 100kph as it drives up and down hills, as it goes uphill the cruise control throttles up to keep at 100kph, as the car goes downhill it backs off to stop it going over 100kph.
In this video Bank 1 Sensor 1 is working as its hunting,...fully adjusting back and forth.
Bank 2 Sensor 2 is dead, its not reacting at all and flat lines no matter what the engine is doing.

Good humor. Bought the 7 piece socket o2 set. Only 1 fits the sensor, and I can't get leverage where its at. Won't budge. Sprayed penetrating oil, etc. Only thing I can think of is a very deep well socket to get me up and above some where I have some room to work. Will add an extension bar to the wrench too. That rear cyl 4-6 socket is in a hellish position. LOVE IT! Probably like this to force me to take it in somewhere.............

Thanks for the video. I hope you can show a lazy O2 sensor scan waves. I used a $10 Bluetooth OBDII scanner to test. Another CZcams video indicated that pumping brake pedal will release vacuum via the brake booster vacuum line, thus inducing a response in scan waves. My XG350 2004 (idle smoothly) showed rather active up and down waves for Bank 1's and Bank 2's S1 sensors (responsible for short-term air/fuel mix adjustment). They responded to my brake pedal pumping (3 or 4 times) (car in garage, not moving) after a very short delay (less than a second perhaps) to show a large peak. The same behaviors were seen in XG's OBDII short-term fuel trim curves. The peak disappeared after a few seconds. My Saturn Vue 2007 V6 (with Honda Pilot engine) (having rough idle problem) did not show S1 sensors in OBDII. I checked Vue's STFT curves instead. Same large peak response to brake pedal pumping. However, the waves without braking were only occasional and far less frequent than my XG's. I guess that means I have lazy S1 sensors causing rough idling. I will replace S1 sensors to see whether rough idling will improve.

So I have a diesel and my engine coolant temperature doesn’t seem to go over 160F/ 72c and in diesels since the fuel combusts from the high compression and cylinder heat I may be experiencing an issue where I’m having some unburnt fuel deposit into my exhaust. My bank 1 sensor 1 and sensor 2 both seem stable at around 0.8 v but when I give it gas they spike, does that mean my o2 sensors are probably good but im having issues with engine temps burning fuel?
I also noticed a slight drop in fuel economy possibly due to engine not able to warm up all the way due to a bad thermostat

I just cleaned his cat, as it was getting clogged up a bit. It was giving him a code that the cat was going out. He keeps getting the evap system code too. Changed everything but the evap canister. I ised the dish soap method to clean out his cat, and it seems to have worked. I didn't check what the readings were before cleaning it out. The light shows it cleaned out a good amount. Couldn't see light through it before. See pots of light through it now.

What about when the Sensor 2 ( downstream) hovers between 0.2 and 0.8? Does that mean the CAT is faulty and not the sensor, right?

My upstream sensor shows no data at all on my scanner. Does that mean the o2 sensor is bad or a wiring issue?

You also have bad o2 sensor that doesnt react to air leaks, or rich condition. it stays at a fixed value at idle.

I was thinking it's a good idea to check for correct signal, ground and 12v positive. Or whatever the system uses before buying an 02 sensor.

Why is the bad sensor so high?
My truck has the sensor two stuck at .750
Could that be why i have loss of power, wont go over 40mph, rpm revv up and drop but truck never accelerates.

Hello, can you explain why the voltage jumps around so much?Constantly going from lean to rich. I would think in a good engine you wouldn't do this. Thanks.

    • @tonyruiz2046
      @tonyruiz2046 Před 2 lety

The ECM does this on purpose.
It run the mixture between lean and rich constantly to help the catalytic converter work better.
