Nissan Skyline R32 GTS-T - One Take

  • Now that R32 Skylines are legal in the US, everyone's talking about how to get a GTR (and Matt did, in fact, buy a 1990 GTR racently). But the GT-ST is the GTR's less-spoken of cousin. It's light, rear-wheel-drive, and has a smaller, 2.0L RB20DET six-cylinder engine, all of which make it a really cool entry level JDM car. Most importantly: it's reliable, and it's cheap.

    Hi Mike, thank you for mentioning Pacific Coast Auto. That is awesome that your car is on this channel.
    Matt- I have been a subscriber for a while and was waiting for one of our cars to make it on here. Today is a good day.
    the GTS-T Skyline is a great little car and much more fun to drive than the number would suggest. It makes a great daily driver with some track or drift potential. Even after 25 years, they still feel like nice cars and have much soul not seen in modenr cars.

      66% of the worlds population drives on the right side of the road. The only country with a credible population who drive on the left "wrong" side is India. So in reality it is England who tries to disassociate themselves from the rest. Though they still have useless inbred Kings and Queens so there is really no hope of them modernizing to drive on the right side. Lol

    • @FedSalman
      @FedSalman Před 8 lety +9

      +SkiDooRydr That is partly true but at the time the Japenese still needed to make a name for themselves. That's why cars built in Japan between the second half of the 80s and the first half of the 90s were so damn good: they over-engineered everything.

    • @kanaric

    • @kanaric
      @kanaric Před 8 lety +6

      +SkiDooRydr Well old Civics used to have double wishbone front and back, were much lighter, etc.
      The current Skylines are the G37s and Q60s or whatever they are called now. Big boats compared to this.
      BMW from back then all had limited slip diff as an option with massive differentials WAY overbuilt. Same with Toyota.
      A lot of thing was done better back then. The only things we really have in improved on now is the interiors, fuel efficiency and power.

I personally know someone who had his seized and crushed since it wasnt a motorex car. You can get one here and register it in a state where no one cares like florida and probably be just fine but dont kid yourself into thinking its not an actual law.

    To the owner of the car: This had probably been addressed by now but the high RPM hesitation may be caused by old coil packs, common on older JDM cars. The spark tends to break down under load+RPM, just a sign of age. The few bolt on parts this car has should not cause this to happen. Thanks for the show, great fun and lots of info.

      +Oliver Shearer I'm currently building up my R32 RB25DET in NZ, I think the reason why people don't modify them particularly well is because the availability for parts can be an issue. For example for a full set of window/door seals sets you back $1000+ and most wreckers don't hold them, at least where I live, good solid cars though and I can't wait till mine is on the road :)

    HICAS or 4 four wheel steering as you call it in this skyline isn't like the conventional for tight turning radius . Unlike many other four wheel steering systems, HICAS is fitted to improve handling rather than just as a parking aid coming into effect at speeds over 80 kph.

    About 5 months ago I began my search for a 1989-1992 R32 GTR living in Germany and returning to the USA in 2018. This limited me to any vehicle before June 1993, so it could be imported under the 25 year rule. The prices for the good R32 GTRs were just ridiculous. Right now GTRs with high miles/rust are selling for 9-10K. I had 12k to spend, so that eliminated the GTR as I wanted a clean low mileage example :( . I changed my mind so many times going between MR2, GTO, RX7, and the GTS-T Type M (GTR Brakes/Suspension and few other nick knacks). I battled over the choices and watched the prices. The GTS-T were the most expensive, but I was being very picky looking for the one with GTR body parts/wheels etc. I'm guessing it was to fill the void of not getting a R32 GTR. In the end I decided on a 1993 Rx7 for a total price of 7k dollar with fees and shipping all included. I'm so happy about my purchase, but after watching this video I'm kind of sad I didn't get a GTS-T.

    My understanding of the rear steering system :
    HICAS is the acronym for Nissans rear wheel steering system named High Capacity Actively Controlled Steering. HICAS works using different sensors which calculate speed, steering angle and corner position the rear wheels are steered by a maximum of 1 degree based on these measurements. HICAS helps eliminate body and give the car a more nimble fell, it does it job well and is helpful for the average driver who doesn’t push the car to its limits.
    HICAS will only operate after ****50 Mph****
    On a racetrack however HICAS becomes to intrusive and unpredictable, particularly on long high-speed corners, counter-steering is often needed to correct the Skyline though the corner, this is not good for lap times. Race team’s usually use a lock bar to disable the HICAS system which improves the Skylines balance, resulting in more predicable handling and faster lap times.
    Earlier skylines (the R32) used a hydraulic system which had speed sensors and used the power steering pump to steer the rear wheels. The newer version named Super HICAS was used from the R33 onward; electric actuators were used a long with a onboard computer, this version saved weight, and is said to be a much improved system.

He was referred by several people I trust, including PW who spared no expense on cars, ever. I'm leaving the car stock and don't plan on doing track days in it, and my car is one of the straightest, cleanest GTR's I've seen in a while with very low miles, so I'm not too worried about it.

      +TheSmokingTire that's great to hear that you got a clean one, looks mint too, however it doesn't really matter how well the car has been maintained or anything it's just a factory fault some of them have which was fixed in the later years, I'm from Australia and it's a well known problem for early r32 gtr's, also I know you said you plan on keeping it stock but I would consider changing out the ceramic turbos for steel ones, they're also known to blow just from old age

I fixed that and put in a Link G4 and a upgraded turbo, coilovers, and nismo suspension bits, car was making around 350whp and I was autocrossing it for a bit. I also had some LMGT4 wheels restored for the car. I sold it for near 20k in 2019 and bought a R33 GTR Tommy Kaira R for $30k. The slight engine trouble in this video got way worse not long after, coils were going. I used Pacific Coast for the R33 import as well and that car was excellent as well.
