What do you recommend using on unfinished wood and on wood that has been stained but not sealed prior to painting with chalk paint?

If it were me, I would think about what men - in general - like. They don't like a lot of 'falderal' (as my dad used to say, meaning fancy or fussy stuff), they tend to favor silver over gold, and deep, dark colors like navy, black, dark green, and dark red over lighter colors (for bedroom furniture, anyway). Combining them...he might like it if you painted the entire piece in a single darker color. Mermaid Tail might do the trick. You could accent/highlighte some edges as well as any decorations and the handles in silver (e.g. gilding wax). Then to get a more 3-dimensional look, you could use dark wax in the crevices and around any decorations and then use clear wax over everything else. It's just a simple idea but it might work for him. :-) At the very least, I hope it helps get your creative juices flowing!
