Dana Hawkins is a different type of monster. Everything he plays is intentional and necessary and he knows exactly where he's going to place each stroke with no wasted motions or effort. The wear spot in the middle of his snare speaks to his exacting articulation. That is no accident!

Bro this is crazy, can u teach us how to count irregular time signatures?
Easiest way to start is by grouping them into smaller sub groups of 2’s and 3’s.
5/8: 12123 12123 12123
7/8: 1212123 1212123
9/8: counts a lot like 4/4 with an extra 1/8th note on the end.
15/16: counts a lot like 4/4 with a 1/16th note dropped off the end.
Some basic examples but the point is that it is easiest to either break down odd time signatures into smaller groups or to relate it to a time signature you already know. Trying to count something like 13/8 in your head is tremendously difficult but when you subdivide those 1/8th notes it’s a lot more approachable. And, with all things in music, the more you play in them the less daunting it is. If you have good feel in 4/4 or 3/4 then you can have good feel in 7/4 or 9/4. It just takes practice and some mental devices to make the counting a little easier.

R2 even prodigies have room to improve my dude. He maybe understood it easier than others, but he didn’t get this smooth by talent alone.
The dude is a beast, no doubt, but you can also tell he works very hard at his craft. The point of my comment was to encourage and help the dude above. Obviously Dana has an edge on a lot of cats but the only way us peasants are going to get close to his level is with hard work and help from our peers. There’s aways going to be someone better, but that should never stop anyone from being their best.
