Over the last few years, I've started to adopt a new travel philosophy: always say "yes" to unexpected opportunities, even if it means abandoning your previous plans. This approach has led to some incredible adventures, everything from meeting an Albanian-Italian prince in Cività to tracking down an extremely rare cheese in Basilicata.
In today's video, we would like to share a story about a recent adventure that happened because we said "yes" to every opportunity that crossed our path in the Calabrian fishing town of Bagnara Calabra. It's a story about a place, about a people, about an adventure at sea, and (of course) about delicious food.
We hope you enjoy it!

Curious what you guys think of my travel philosophy... Have you ever had an amazing experience by abandoning your plans and just saying "yes" to an unexpected opportunity?
Those are the best experiences. It's nice to have a plan, but you don't have to stick to the plan. Just to know you have one just in case.
I've not said "yes" enough, but the times I have, it's always been great! I hope you continue to this greatness on you. Have fun!
Not quite the full day adventure you had, but my sister and I were in Oaxaca, and a friend I’ve gotten to know there asked if we would like to go to a chocolate “experience.” How could you say no? The “experience” was this gastronomic almost performance where this former architect-cum-chocolate guru presented different concoctions he would make right in front of us based on research he had done on ingredients commonly used in pre-Colombian times. The combinations were both sweet and savory and seemed totally off the wall. They were all amazing. One used petals from a particular type of hibiscus I’d never heard of. Another whipped it into a foam with almost a cocoa + lavender taste. Another had two elixirs at different ends of this glass vessel that almost looked like a marijuana pipe. At first you, you tasted the liquids separately from each end, but then tilted the pipe to mix them together for a completely different flavor. Another used toasted amaranth in this crunchy nugget that would blow a Nestlé Crunch out of the water. Apparently, he was just testing out this “experience,” and we were some of the early guinea pigs. I try to say yes whenever anyone asks me to try something new or something I have no idea what I’m getting myself into - especially when it involves being a guinea pig like that.
Harper, you and your wife should come to amalfi where my nona was born. very famous for seafood and a very beautiful part of italy. i recomend Scialatielli all'Amalfitana, Tagliolini with lemon, Ndunderi, elizia al limone and Amalfian Sfogliatella. ive always wanted to go and live with my nona up at the top of the mountain with her at her old house. also she is a chef in amalfi and a lovely lady. and she was born at a very old church because the town was smaller like 78 years ago when she was born and it was a little more difficult to travel. But amalfi has a beautiful history.
Best philosophy ever!!
If an Italian asks you if you want to go to his nonna's house, it would be foolish to answer no.
Saying no is actually against the law 😄
Thats silly. Say no if you wish
@@snyder_fine_artIt'd be your loss if you do so. Their hospitality is immaculate. You're very likely won't get another chance if you do so.

THIS is actually how life should be lived with adventures, family and fantastic food & wine.
When we moved to Arco Felice near Naples back in around 1998 we had a great villa overlooking the water but our household goods would not arrive for 1-2 days... we had sleeping bags and canned food. My wife and I were lying on the nice tile floor chatting when suddenly the door opened and around 12-14 people streamed into our place... It was the neighbors. They knew that we had to wait for our stuff and wanted to welcome us so the brought platters of steaming hot Neapolitan specialties... they plopped onto the floor with us and we all ate and chatted quite a bit-mind you, they did NOT speak English and we did not speak Italian at the time... It was quite the welcome and quite an impression!.
16:00 As a Northern Italian person, thank you for adding English subtitles! 😂
Ok now I don't feel bad for not understanding everything she said 😃
Being open to, "yes",
Is magical way to travel
What a charming and delightful story. My dad, rest his soul, came over to Canada in 1955 as a young man of 19. He worked at Weston Bakeries in Windsor for 17 cents an hour! He eventually settled in Sudbury, Ontario, a smallish mining city in northern Ontario, which had, and still has, a thriving Italian diaspora. He was from the north of Italy, where the natural friendliness, generosity, and just general all-round niceness of people translated to here. The people that you met on your "yes" day remind me so much of those people. What a glorious day for you, your friends and family. It's easy to say "yes" when you are in the midst of these lovely Italians.
My standard advice to people going to Ireland, too: "Don't plan too tight a schedule -- things are gonna happen that you won't want to miss"!
I've been watching Pasta Grammer since you made videos in Maine. I have to say, though all your videos are wonderful, this one is probably the most heartwarming one ever! I love your travel philosophy too! Great work, great entertainment, and greatly informative. Keep 'em coming!!!!
What I have learned, decades ago, is that, especially on holidays/vacations, traveling throughout (mostly) all of southern Europe, the journey is more important than reaching a/the destination....
Wow I can’t believe you guys went to my town of Bagnara Calabra .. thank you for showcasing this beautiful place !!!
@pastagrammar my wife and I will be in Bagnara Calabra beginning of October and we would to go to Dasa to n this trip and hope Harper and Eva you guys happen to be there at that time!
Looks like a beautiful town! Do you know which restaurant they went to?
Still recovering from surgery and from a long prior illness to the surgery and trying to find my joy again. This video gave me joy and inspiration and just made me smile. Thank you. 💋
I understand just how you feel. 🙏💖
Maybe if you come to Italy.... You can recover better 😊😊🌞🏖️🌊
You are welcome 🤗🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹

@@falt.a7350 That sounds like a fine idea. Cheers!
I go by this mind set too. Once when living in Alaska my wife and I missed our flight because of weather so we were at a restaurant in Anchorage and started talking to the couple next to us and they invited us to their house for dinner that night. It was Christmas Eve and they were from Venezuela. That night was the best food and we felt so welcomed with all their friends and family.
This has become my favorite video that you have produced. Of course I love Ava and her cooking. But this video was so heartwarming showing the true openness of good people. It left me feeling hopeful for the future of mankind. Bravo Harper and Ava!
The stretch of coast between Bagnara and Scilla is called the purple coast due to the purple reflections of the water, it is incredible to swim in it. But even more incredible is the view from Aspromonte, the high mountain overlooking the Strait of Messina. The view ranges from the Aeolian Islands to Etna, and when Etna and Stromboli erupt, the flows are visible at night. But Bagnara is known for being the birthplace of Loredana Bertè and her sister Mia Martini, two excellent singers.
God made Italy so we can experience heaven on earth. That's how I always feel anywhere in Italy. You are so right about magical experiences around the corner wherever you go there.
Harper, you've beautifully and accurately captured the essence of Southern Italian hospitality. My relatives are from a small town called Campagna near Salerno, and the vibe in Bagnara was exactly that of Campagna! Thanks to you and Eva for your always informative and entertaining videos. You kids rock!
Hands down one of my favorite Pasta Grammar videos. Makes me proud of my Italian heritage makes me want to visit Italy even more.
I visited Italy many times in the early 80's when in the Navy. I had the same opportunities as you from Livorno to Naples and Sicily. Beautiful people who will give you everything they have to show you a great time, do not take advantage and you will remember forever. I love Italy!
Tourists follow a plan. A traveler follows adventure. Keep on traveling.
Harper, this was one of your best episodes! The ‘yes’ philosophy really worked great for you, and seeing you and Eva with such wonderful, generous people made me so happy for you all.
Besides being Italian, I am a retired Air Force C-130 pilot. Some of my best memories are nights we spent in Italy. If I ever had the opportunity, I always wanted to eat at the local place, not the tourist traps. One evening we got in really late at Aviano Air Base in the north. When we finally got to the hotel in Aviano, all the restaurants were closed, but the hotel opened their kitchen for us. Not just a simple meal, we had two choices for a first course and two choices for a second course plus dessert and lots of wine. You just cannot beat Italians for hospitality! Great video Harper and Eva!
The first memory of my life, as a three-year-old : six fishermen carrying a huuuge swordfish from their (sailing!) boat across the beach in Positano, Campania, Italy (just south of Naples) in 1953. Not a single hotel there then. War widows rented out rooms. Paradise for a kid: sunshine, pasta, pizza and gelati, donkeys everywhere, and everyone LOVED children. I sort of reconise the mood ...
That was a wonderful display of warmth and generosity by the fishermen. I loved it.
ahh! The great generosity of Southern Italians!
There are beautiful souls to be found when you say yes! 🤗
I've never had the funds to travel but your videos help me to experience a different place and culture from home. Thank you!
Wow... and wow... yes and yes please!! How amazing!! Say YES and have an amazing adventure.... keep 'em coming!!!! Love it ❤❤❤❤
The magic of sharing cucina povera with everyday, hardworking but happy people. Cooking simple but really tasty dishes with only what the ground or the sea around you can offer and the joy of sharing it with others. A common way of life for most of the people living around the Mediterranean Sea.
What an amazing day!!!! You make me want to travel… & say YES!!! ❤️
Summer in southern italy - love it ❤😂😋😋😋
Got a big nostalgia hit from watching this. Honestly, every time I go visit family in Italy this kind of endless chain of food-related side quests happens. Never what you expected going in, but they always inevitably end up as top-tier memories. :)
WOW! WOW! WOW! This was the most beautiful and heartwarming video to date! BRAVO!!!
Oh wow!! The BEST day ever! I much prefer going with the flow to pre-planning everything. Bravo!
“Yes” is going to be my new travel word for sure. GREAT video!!!
Catarina, how she’s grown! God Bless her. And to answer your question Harper, Sì, naturalmente!
Oh wow! I actually am moved to tears! The act of saying “yes” to the Universe with a grateful heart unlocks beautiful things. Thank you so much for this video. Philosophy indeed!!
Dived.
What an adventure!
I am really excited to get your cookbook
Our hearts go out to youll. Sitting here crying like a baby. We got to know the beag over several years now. God bless youll! Youre in our thoughts!
I LOVE a day in the life adventure videos when y'all travel to 🇮🇹! They're some of my favorite videos! Thank you for documenting your journeys and for having such interesting adventures! 🎉❤!
What AMAZING people, and thank you, Harper, for the advice to say YES! I am glad you have encountered such wonderful people and I do hope to join you and lovely Eva on one of your tours some day!
YES!!!!
YESYESYES!!!
That is the best philosophy... If you don't say yes to opportunity, then you miss out on so many things.
The best part of travel is meeting the people and the unexpected experiences.
Awesome story Harper , we need more Uncle Matt , he is an old hippy . The world needs more hippies .Thankyou 😊
I agree with you. I would love to learn more about Uncle Matt.
Please make more content just like this. This was awesome! Felt like I was there with you guys experiencing new adventures and delicious food. Eva's gestures -PRICELESS:)
Thank you Ava and Harper for sharing this wonderful journey with us! The sheer amount of hospitality brought tears to my eyes! This is my dream!
Wonderful. I hated for it to end. I wanted more. 😊
Delight, food, culture, warmth, Love❤❤❤ thank you
You know who else is crazy amazing? You! I watch your videos as a reminder that to be truly alive, you have to jump in and swim. Sure, sometimes the water will be too cold but it might also be perfectly wonderful. Thank you.
One of your very finest videos. Grazie mille!
This is the absolute best way to travel. For some reason every time I travel I always end up befriending locals and end up having the most amazing adventures. From hidden beaches in Hawaii to hippie parties in London and authentic family dinners in France. Might not be ideal to some, but I wouldn’t have it any other way💜
Thanks for sharing this experience with us dude. I've got Italian cousins and always remember to go hungry because you'll never even sneak away without 'mangia mangia!'
Harper, before I leave I plan, and plan, and plan every day of our vacations. But the moment we arrive in each city, I drop it all and we go where the winds and wine take us. We learned it from our friends who had a near identical fishing day as yours in Zihuatanejo, MX. Great video, and excited to receive the cookbook.
Thank you. My maternal grandmother was from Bagnara and I always wanted to see this place. Loved la Nona.
Absolutely a great video..nice to see kindness of that magnitude. In this depressing world as of late..
Omg! This is my favorite video ever! Love the culture, the food, the amazing energy of everyone, especially the nona, this video brings a lot joy and love. Thank you so much and please do more of these kind of video! Authentic real life and food!❤❤❤❤
I'm very envious of you, what an amazing day and such wonderful people to spend it with.
That was amazing! Thank you Eva and Harper for sharing that with us all.
What a soul filling adventure. Things happen that the mind will never forget and keep life truly worth exploring.
Thank you. Another amazing post. Just say YES!
This video is gonna cause havoc on that town... hope they're prepared. Wish I could be on your tour!
Thank you for showcasing Ospitalità calabrese.
This was such an amazing video. What touched me most was the hospitality of the locals. I'm so happy you enjoyed the spontaneity of the day. It reminded Roy and me of the friendly locals on our recent trip to Dasa`. I'm so proud to be an Italo Americana - our people are so warm and full of life!
Love spontaneous meals and fun with friends and family!
WOW ! One of my most favorite episodes yet ! Love the seafood and the beautiful hospitaly of the towns people! Love you guys , keep up the great adventures !
Amazing; such lovely people. This video compares to when you introduced us to Giovanni. The world contains many good people but it appears that most are concentrated in Italy.
Best fish tale EVER! Keep saying “yes” to Life! ❤
This is an outstanding amazing episode! The YES philosophy is the best! I agree with you, the people in southern Italy and in Sicily, where I live, are generous in spirit, kindness, culture and with experiences! Life is Good!!! 🎉❤😊
This is so lovely to see. Sometimes this world seems so isolated, but these people know how to enjoy life and live it to the fullest
In Ticino si trova solo pesce spada e tonno surgelati o comunque congelati. Non oso immaginare la bontà di quel pesce fresco!
Glad to see that the fishing trip that you were planning when we left went well.
I absolutely loved this video! From start to finish. I feel like I went there with you. I am Italian and so seeing those wonderful places and people warmed my heart. Italians are known for their hospitality and generosity and I carry on that tradition with family and friends. Food is everything but sharing it is the best part! You’re so lucky to have these opportunities!
Bellissima!!!!!!!! What a fantastic adventure. Serendipity is a wonderful thing!
Amazing Day for you all, that's why everyone should travel the world to see all the amazing possibilities and experiences and learn different cultures.
yes, I want a day like that. It could not get better.
The video was amaizing I love the sea 🌊 I grew up in a port city so the sea mesmerized.
Was a great adventure.
I love grandma Francheska she is adorable lady and absolute the tuna meatballs looks delicious 😋 😋.
Thank you so much 🌟
Hugs from Utah 🇺🇸

I love this video 😍❤I think this is my favorite one. From a young age I have been a very adventurous person. Change and uncertainty has never scared me and I welcome it. This is what really living is all about, saying yes and getting out of your comfort zone because you never know where the day will take you. Just beautiful ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for such a beautiful video. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I probably enjoyed your trip as much as you! It brought me back to my Roots.. Calabria.... Good people, Great Food and always a good Time! ☺️ Today's word is YES!😊😊😊😊😊. ❤❤❤❤I love both of you ❤
Absolutely 100% agree.
Very open minded always helps.😊
I have sailed past Bagnara many many times when I was on the Coral Sea. I instantly recognize the town by the stone forts and the bridge on top of the mountain. I wish I had known the name so I could have visited . It looked so beautiful.
Keep up the good work, Lee.
Wait! Some guy with long hair and a beard hanging around with a bunch of fisherman... Where have I heard this story before?
🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for taking me on your adventures.
C’est une histoire et une journée fantastique! Merci pour ce super vidéo 👍
Pre ordered the book, arrives just in time for my birthday 🥳
Look forward to an Italian birthday feast 😋
WOW! This was amazing. THIS is why if I ever moved abroad from the USA, it would be to Italy. The people, the nature, and the food are all so beautiful and so amazing.
I love that you guys do this! Seize every single opportunity, especially, if it involves Nonna!
That seems like such a southern Italian thing! I love Italy and I go there all the time (I live next door), but I almost always go to the north. I love the people there as well, but they aren't quite as friendly and INSANE (in a good way) as the people in the south.
I really like this style of video. Really enjoyed it - maybe travelogue, a bit of Pasta Grannies vibe.. It was great.
And yes, of course you to the grandmas kitchen when told to!
And yes, seat of the pants travel choices is how we travel also.
I wish I could have seen the video. I hope he enjoyed describing it.
Complimenti per aver scoperto Bagnara, il posto dove noi calabresi andiamo per gustare la tradizione. Un posto con una cultura della pesca millenaria
Also in some of those swordfish fishing boats the guy on top of the crowsnest on the mast has the controls of the boat too
Yeah, that was the case here!
It really looks like in Italy we just keep moving from a meal to the next! 😆
15:41 New Italian gesture detected: cheek screw! 😄 Learning a simple gesture can be more effective than words. 😉
What a wonderful video. This is what I love about Italy! I was kind of waiting for Harper the harpooner! lol
Great video, great story. It was wonderful to see Bagnara again!! Thank you for sharing these types of places with us. ♥️♥️
What an incredible video. Thank you for sharing this story.
One of your best videos. As we are starved of community in the USA, you bring us a mega dose. GRAZIE!!
I understood this after visiting Dasà. I returned to the US and decided to be the person who starts the conversation, who talks and invites neigh it's to share food. So far, I have had one neighbor who reciprocates this, bringing goodies to my door. It's a start. We need to share the ❤️
@@ccrccr3907 ~ I live in a beach town in the USA in a small community of 14 homes. We are slowly getting there too. 💙🌴
Watching this just made me smile so much. 😊
Fabulous video and a testament to the friendliness and hospitality of Italians! Nowhere in the world sings to my souls like Italy does. And yes, our best adventures in life have been when we got lost, or decided to abandon our carefully crafted plans and just live in the moment. Stick to the "Yes Man" philosophy - it's a winning strategy!
Extraordinary! Tha k you. And I think you meant that the fish "dived". Didn't he know to take his hat off,
What an amazing experience you guys had! Thanks for sharing!
