Probably don't try to ask her out or get her number off rip. Introduce yourself, make some conversation, and then fuck off until the next time you see her, just keep the interactions casual and light until you've established some rapport. Better to slow roll it if you're likely to run into her a bunch

I just ignore women at the gym. And the few times in recent years I have had to ask them something like the standard "Excuse me, how many more sets do you have here?" or "Are you using this?" they automatically act defensive as if they are expecting me to hit on them. A lot of them need to get over their selves.

I think we are far more visual than women, so at the gym, most of us see exactly what we want. Women in the other hand are slightly more attracted to verbal skills, charisma, confidence, etc, and a gym is not the best place to show them. Women are more willing to be approached at a social event, or a club, or someplace where people interact. Long story short, it would never be easy for men, gym or not.

I had this one gal absolutely beaming at me once when we crossed paths exiting the gym (I almost tripped over her, apologized and held the door for her), and then on two separate occasions when I walked into the weight room and there were no benches, she popped up like mid set and gave me her bench. The second time she basically growled at this other dude that was b-lining for her bench as she got up (I had only just walked into the room, he had probably been waiting, poor guy), and was clearly offering it to me specifically.
Somehow I still flubbed it and didn't manage to follow through. Just smiled at her, commented that I think that's the second time she did that for me and thanked her -- then just carried along with my workout.
Haven't seen her around in a while now. Honestly it just didn't register in those moments that she may have been interested, even if looking back it's obvious. She just seemed so out of my league, wouldn't even have seen her as an option... Veeeeeery appealing figure, big dark eyes brunette, always comes to the gym with her hot friends and seems to have a big, bubbly and intense personality. Which is to say, at first glance anyways, likely the sort of lass that pulls some pretty impressive men.
Another time more recently I had this comely petite young woman with whom I was only making very casual conversation (I asked her to help pick out flowers for my grandmother that I was gonna have delivered to her after her surgery) start asking me what my plans were for the weekend. I literally told her I intended to finish my book and cook a stew. 2 days later I'm driving in the car like "I was supposed to ask her out!! Wtf man???"
So my advice is to stay alert and actually notice when they drop hints, because they do it more than you would think. Also I think taking the headphones off in the gym more isn't a bad idea - it's good to interact with the other regulars.
But I do often notice dudes approaching some of the regular women and if I can be blunt - the sorts of dudes that do this tend to be a bit... off. Overhearing their attempts can be excrutiating sometimes. I nearly felt like interrupting once because the guy just had no shame at all, every possible signal coming from the girl he has basically cornered was a polite "thanks but no thanks". Tbf she didn't seem uncomfortable so much as mildly annoyed - but I was at the rack next to her and the cringe was almost too much for me to take. Then you get those dudes trying to recommend a workout plan to women who obviously know what they're doing...
So what's my point - I think there are plenty of women who go to the gym open or even wanting to find dates, but I think as dudes we should wait for them to make some kind of hint or move first. I think theres a lot of dudes who just don't bother to read body language or ease into it at all and just plow right through - and hell that probably works for them a fair bit - but I think the more civilized way to do it is to either find or allow for some sort of more organic and casual interaction to take place, and then look for some cues or hints within that interaction to get a green light to actually make your intentions clear.
You should at least have smiled and said hello to a gym crush a couple times before you start trying to get her number or something. I know the orthodoxy is that the bold "hey excuse me can I get your number" is the chad way to do it, but in practice the dudes who do this (at gyms anyways) seem like socially inept weirdos to me.
But that's the other thing, though; if you're not the sort of dude that runs around doing this all the time (and to girls out of your league probably) - then you're (probably) not the sort of dude who makes them uncomfortable and who they complain about online and whatnot. So you might actually so alright if you decide to be bold for a change.

Maybe there's a level of insecurity around a gym environment for women. Obviously not as absolute factor. But like I've seen a lot of women debate looking sexy at a gym because committing to the gym takes mental discipline, a morale of boost of looking good motivates some of them to show up. So even in a place where you're suppose to be sweaty and stinky and making ugly faces some women use beauty to bring some positive reinforcement to keep the gym engaging.
So I mention insecurity because working out won't look cute at some points, hair out of place/loud breathing/armpit shirt stains/wedgies and then some dude roles up to shoot their shot when they're not there for that and not looking their best. I guess I should say self conscious (not insecure). I think that plays a part because in recent years I've noticed some women claim they think men's compliments are empty because they think we're opportunist plus we give them so frequently. So couple that logic with a man showing interest when she's not trying to attract one feels she looks attractive at the moment, I can see why doesn't feel the same as being hit on at a bar.

I think it's the environment feeling very individual. Even if you're in a class with students and instructor you're all on one bike or matt. Gyms are definitely like those silent parties where people dance together but have different music in their head phones. Most of the social efforts are for sharing equipment or talking a the front desk or talking with friends that came along. Everyone is collectively working out because they don't have home gyms. So approaching a woman working out is like asking someone something when they have in earbuds listening to music. It stops the flow state. And women that don't like getting hit on when they're done working out for the day? I guess that's a preconceived environment etiquette too. Despite all the online arguments of whether a taken person should like pictures of other people, I've seen a lot of women make posts online saying social media is not a dating app. As though hinge or bumble have no overlap with Instagram or twitter. To me, almost any public space with appropriate timing is fit for dating interactions. Social media is a digital public space, but maybe some women just compartmentalize some spaces as a one-dimensional purpose.

I think it's also a bit of battle of the sexes friction behind it. Like "don't approach me, men approach me when I don't want to be approached". The whole women only gyms discourse has been thrown around often. I think some tiny part of not like advances is just sexist, because there's not a lot of big thriving popular women-only gyms despite the attention of men not being wanted, and lesbians exist. Then the other part of not liking it just preference. People will see each other repeatedly with memberships to places so there's that, which gives it a work element vibe, hence Patty's "don't shit where you eat" point of view. all I know is people can figure out a happy medium for themselves because I hate working out in front of people. @@CarlosDaMufNo, it's just super obvious with her. She gets awkward anytime someone asks her about guys, and she's very particular about never referring to anyone with a he when it comes to this topic. Here she sighs during it and avoids directly answering the question about guy bods, then responds only with "partner" and "the people" she's dated. Even in her 'my story' video a while back she was super cryptic about her ex "partner" as she kept referring to them as partner only. No one in a straight relationship puts that much thought into intentionally avoiding referring to their ex as a he in the past tense, unless it wasn't a he.
So I'm not saying there's anything wrong, I'm just saying it comes off pretty clear about her so this seemed a bit awkward. In the full interview it's easier to even see how less relaxed she got from this question compared to the discussions before this one.
