Peter Harrigan grew up playing with his sister’s Barbie dolls. As an adult, he put away his doll playtime until 1993, when his partner, Stan Baker, gifted him a Costume Ball Barbie for his birthday. Thirty years and 600 Barbie dolls later, the rest is history.
Harrigan is a theater professor at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester and Baker is a psychotherapist. In 1997, the pair were part of a lawsuit to legalize marriage equality that resulted in civil unions for same-sex couples in Vermont. The state legalized gay marriage in 2009, and the couple wed in 2010. They share a townhome in Shelburne with their dog, Ginger, and a lower level - nobody puts Barbie in a basement! - full of 11.5-inch-tall dolls.
Harrigan is the main collector in the family, and he creates intricate dioramas displaying the dolls in a variety of settings, including some Ken-only spaces. He keeps perfectly organized shelves of shoes, jewelry, clothing, furniture and miniature items that he has collected over the years from many sources. Baker collects Ken dolls, and the two have attended a variety of Barbie conventions together over the years.
Seven Days senior multimedia producer Eva Sollberger visited with Harrigan and Baker at their home in early July. They met up again on July 20 at Palace 9 Cinemas in South Burlington to see the Barbie film - with Barbie and Ken dolls from the movie in tow.

This is wonderful! There's so much creativity and talent in these displays, fabulous dolls, and Peter and Stan are super nice guys.
I had the privilege of seeing Peter's collection in person when my husband Joe and I were there for Peter and Stan's wedding. It ranks as one of my most fun and most amazing experiences ever (and the wedding was pretty great, too!)

What an enviable collection, and it’s great to see a real doll collector! Lol my mom owns over 200 Barbies and has them all locked away in a closet. She’s in a huge townhouse now herself, and has a spare room that she refuses to make a Barbie room despite my nudges! I’m gonna show her this maybe she’ll get the hint that it’s time to put her girls on display like they’re meant to be.
Those need to be displayed, and shown off.

This is the best Barbie collector video I've seen. I love that they're out of the boxes and played in the same way I'd play with them if I had the time/space/money. Wondering about 3:39- The Look Dolls. I'm trying to decide whether to fluff and separate the box hair on the blond to give her more of a puffy curl like in her product pictures. Noticed you haven't done it yet either. Just haven't gotten to it yet? I think she's one of the prettiest Barbies ever made and the redhead is stunning too. I also changed the redhead's outfit but the blonde's outfit is already perfect and super flattering!

Love this, my first time seeing a Ken collector.
This is amazing!! How wonderful that Stan was so supportive of something that brings Peter so much joy. (And what an inspiring story of their contribution to marriage equality!) This is so creative as a pop culture historical record. It's like a cross between an art installation and a museum! I would pay a lot of money to view this collection in person. Wishing them every happiness.

Stop! Does Peter have a CZcams channel? I like and have a couple of Barbies, but it's the sewing of the clothes he s made I want to focus on. Omg they are amazing. I bought two Barbie patterns to make clothes for my Grand daughter and they were challenging in a good way and fun to make. I m hoping he could take one doll at a time and do a sew along and how he transformed them into magic. Also a ten doll a day fashion show, that would be fun. The dolls and their seat for the movie, love the creativity. Keep inspiring.

This man is an artist..he should have his own doll line and fashion brand..gosh he could even be an interior designer and set designer..his collection is like a pop culture meets fashion world meets a Barbie museum and is well cared for.

Actually, that would be a good idea for a movie--the dolls come alive when nobody is looking, and then go back into place. Like in Toy Story. But with their Barbies.

This is a very fun video and a terrific collection and display room! I have a couple hundred dolls but only 23 are Barbie and Ken dolls but there are more Barbies/Ken that I want to get. Keep on having fun!👍👍👍😀😀
My grandmother lived in Royalton, Vermont for years( her house was called the Fox Stand). I use to visit her in the 50’s-60’s when I was a child. So nice there. She had a few dolls, no Barbie’s though. What a fabulous collection. The clothing alone is so fantastic. What a nice couple you are, and how nice you have taken care of these treasures.

Glad to see this! I, too, collect Barbie, but only vintage. I, too, have hundreds of them -several hundreds. Over the years, the collection expanded to include Tammy, Tressy, Little Miss Revlon, Vogue’s Jill and many knockoff Barbies from the 1960s and very early 1970s. Willing to bet I have one of the largest collections of Princess Grace/Mego’s Maddie Mod. How lucky you are to have the space to display them!
I love these two!!! It's so nice to have a supportive partner. I collect Sylvanian Families/Calico Critters. My husband painted a room pink for me and I have my growing collection all over the room. Soon he will have to make me a bigger room. I got some great ideas from this Barbie collection. It looks like Barbie Heaven there!!

Oh,and good luck with the club. When I lived in Boston, a branch of the New England Barbie club tried forming, but it failed miserably - I blame the guy running it - very clickish. The clubs used to be coordinated nationally to some degree - the woman involved in that was Ruth Cronkite - she lived in New York but she’s been dead for quite awhile now. I live in Louisville, but have no idea about such activity in this area.

I love this collection.
Very moving video. I was struck by their "Ken" dolls which are more realistic and adult. I've scarcely been able to find anything about them online. I'm not going to ask what they thought of the controversial storyline in the movie.

I know there are many collectors with oodles of Barbie dolls, but I haven't seen this degree of variety and originality in terms of displays, dioramas, miniature settings, different themes, new ensembles, etc. Just fantastic!

How were you lucky enough to get the Down's Syndrome Barbie?! OH MY! Nobody can get those, they're always all sold out! I've been watching a lot of Barbie collector videos and I have yet to see Ballerina Barbie. I used to have one of those dolls, and my sister had Growing Up Skipper, who, when you turned her arm, she would instantly grow a chest. Do you have either one of those dolls?
