Yeah, my students call me teacher as well. However, I know that if I tell them to call me just my name, it'll sound weird because in my country we never call our teachers by their name.

Yeah, it is differentiated..."thank God," "thank you," etc. ("thank" followed by noun or pronoun) is the appropriate to use, while "thanks to you" when "thank is followed by "to." But when I say, "Thanks Professor Wallace," I believe this is also right by the one you are talking to. "Thank God," "thank your mother," "thank Professor Wallace," etc. is sort of suggesting or commanding the one you are talking to thank someone.

Hello, I heard one expression "It is always safe to ask..." and i can't understand it. I certainly know the meaining of the words, but I think there is a definite significance. I found an expression "it's safe to say (that)" which means "say that you are confident about what you are going to say". So, do I understand right that these two expressions have the same meaning? And could you give more examples with this expression?

      @EarlyBirdCraft Před 5 lety

Your English if perfect btw. I’m surprised actually that you’re even having some trouble with that particular phrase.
It’s always safe to ask means you should always ask before guessing.
Let’s say you just started a new job. You don’t know how to do this job very well because you’re new. Someone tells you how to do it and next time you feel like you remember what that person said but not so sure. That’s when you’re “safe to ask” meaning instead of guessing, just ask.
      Hope it helped

Hello Gaby. My name is Augusto Vargas. I'm from Peru. Your videos are really useful. They have indeed helped me improve my fluency and accuracy at listening.
I've got a question, though I'd like to ask. This is about what the difference is between the words "especially" and "specially". Actually I've been mostly using the first word as the correct way to spell that word until I saw there is the other word with a similar spelling and little difference in meaning. When do we use the first and the second? I'd really appreciate your answering me to that question. Many thanks.

Teacher Gabby, thank you for your advice. I that one of the reasons why we often make mistakes is because we tend to think in Spanish. For example, I only wrote "teacher" because in my language is a polite way to refer to them, now I know it's not correct to say or write just teacher. We also use trust in translators li Google's, this is a useful tool but it's a machine. Thank you again Gabby for help us.

One thing that drives me NUTS when people start to become more fluent is the ghastly habit common to may english speakers - the dreaded 'like' as a filler crutch word. (My qualification? Native English speakers do use must a lot. American speakers don't use it as much but British speakers do.
Students should also avoid using, should in place of must, because should doesn't mean, must.
Even "You really should..." or "You absolutely should..." don't mean the same as must.
A better suggestion would have been to replace must with "have to" more often.
Should as a replacement for must is incorrect.

Hi Gabby. Thanks a million for your very informative video. As an English teacher in France with a 12-year experience, I was surprised to hear about MUST and MUSTN’T. I understand you use MUST for Probability (She must be sleeping by now.). So what would you use for Obligation? Have to? Got to? Have got to? (I got to go right now).
Then, if MUSTN’T is archaic, what would you use for Interdiction? Cannot? May not?
Thanks for your help. Greetings from France. Mehdi

I understand! Using Miss/Ms./Mrs. for a female teacher is also a sign of respect. 'Professor' can be used for women and men, but usually only at the college/university level. However, using 'teacher' before your teacher's name, even though you mean to be respectful, is incorrect! Thanks for watching, and I hope this lesson helped!

@Tejmeet: In Vietnam we don't use English in daily life or as an official language, so we have to learn to understand the language in the way native speakers (English, American, Canadian...) do. And actually when we translate the word into Vietnamese in the correct way, "teacher" refers to the job only, so it's not the right way to adress the person who is doing that job. That's why we always ask our students to adress us by Mr. and Ms.

Some times ago, when I was working overnight shift and when going out(of course, it's just passed 7AMP) from work, I'll be meeting on the way out some of the morning shift co-workers and greeting me "goodnight / sometimes, good evening". Honestly, in the first and/or early times, I felt I can't believe what I was hearing from them during thsee intances yet, I did adjusting. Times went by, we're face familiarizing each other, jokingly, I gave this response " Yeah, goodnight/good evening early in the morning". Sorry to myself if I was wrong
