    LYRICS
    To your soul
    To your soul
    Cry
    Cry
    Cry
You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case
Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face
Mother will never understand why you had to leave
But the answers you seek will never be found at home
The love that you need will never be found at home
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Pushed around and kicked around, always a lonely boy
You were the one that they'd talk about around town as they put you down
And as hard as they would try they'd hurt to make you cry
But you never cried to them, just to your soul
No, you never cried to them, just to your soul
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
    Cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case
Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Songwriters: James William Somerville / Larry Steinbacheck / Steve Bronski
Smalltown Boy lyrics © Warner/Chappell Music, Inc, BMG Rights Management
Smalltown Boy" is a song by the British synth-pop group Bronski Beat. It was released in 1984 and appeared on the band's debut album The Age of Consent, released in December 1984.
An official music video was shot and released later in 1984. The narrative video features band member Jimmy Somerville as the boy who has experienced the issues described in the lyrics. Seen on a train, he is contemplating his childhood through flashbacks and the events that have caused him to leave his parents' home.
At a swimming pool, his friends (played by band members Larry Steinbachek and Steve Bronski) dare him to approach a boy that he is attracted to, for which he is later attacked in an alley by a homophobic gang led by the young man he had approached at the swimming pool. A police officer brings him back to his home. It is implied that the boy's parents learn of his homosexuality for the first time through this incident and are shocked, but only the father seems unsupportive. The boy is then shown hugging his mother goodbye and catching a train to London, on which he is reunited with his friends.

This song means a lot to me.. I was 14 years old and I lost all my family. I was sleeping on freands sofas what people find hard to believe is a child can slip through the government security nets. I was one of them. So I packed my bags an hitch to London 250 miles away. I did things I'm not proud of to survive I met new people and experienced new cultures at aged 16 I hitched out of London to the coast. Brighton. I had an amazing 35 year adventure I fell in love an had a wonderful 28 year relationship. We moved away from Brighton then last year my partner died of cancer. I thought we grow old together but life said NO MORE so now I'm single again and getting use to sleeping alone again after 28 funy thing is I'm now living back from the town I moved away from as a child. So this song means ALOT to me. It is me..

The song is pretty sad on its own but it gets more sad when you know that the song is autobiographic. The singer, Jimmy Somerville, talks about his own experience of how he had to leave his home town because he was ostracized for his homosexuality by the people of his town and especially by his father. But he ran away to London and could live freely there which is at least somewhat of a happy end. That's why smalltown boy is one of my favourite songs. Because of the genuine and authentic emotions he expressed in it. He just tells his story.

Why bother? You don't understand because you're not listening. It's an extremely sad and real life depiction of being gay and not accepted by society or even his own family. How crazy is it that after being beaten up by strangers he said a few words to, to then be brought home by the police only to have his father raise his hand to him, threatening even more violence . When he leaves the family home in the end his father won't even shake his hand. (Trust me, I feel his pain because I was kicked out of my parents home 25 years ago and haven't been aloud back since just for being born gay. They're Jehovah's Witnesses. Like I chose this.)

Incredible message when this came out. Homosexuality was not something that was spoken about or accepted in "polite society". It was a time when the term AIDS was first used and it was very misunderstood. The National Cancer Institute only found the cause of AIDS in 1984, around the time this song came out. People did NOT sing about their sexual preferences. People are more open minded today. Remember, this was 35 years ago!

I'm not gay, but I love the message the video want's to bring about, between all the hardships and bad treatment back in that time, and place, it told people to not give up, just cut ties with those who aren't good for you.
It may sound like "run away, turn away, run away", just running away from all your troubles, but it's more than that. It's about finding your happy place, and the protagonist being gay, and his father, and his classmate who he has a crush on apparently, being gay haters or at least disapproving, is a really bad thing, and the video and song just try to show that if you cut the ties with what does you bad, and who bully you, you are left of with the people who truly care for you.
In his case its the two gay friends he eventually skips town with, so the ending is a happy ending, but its clear the song tries to shift attention to the issue of abuse at home, you two looked away to your pet, when the policeman stopped the father from beating his son up some more, the policeman has to step forward and reach out his hands to make the father not do what he wanted to do.

You know you don't have to say, that you're not gay right? Just try to flip this thing around: if you're watching a music video, where the protagonists are straight, or just the song is about a straight romance and you're not straight... Literally no one would start a comment saying "I'm not straight but.." If the song get's you, cause you ARE gay, because of your sexuality, its different tho.

@@emiliewind9434 There were some reaction peeps who have no clue about what the message of the video is, because they do not know, that gay people, especially youngsters, were and still are beaten by their parents, once they find out.
I also needed to mention that I am not gay, myself, because people, especially on the internet, still do witchhunts against gay people, and still meme about gay people and still use the "what, you fucking gay or what" comments, you see them every day everywhere.

If they don't like it then that's fine since we don't all like the same things though Ashtyn does say she liked this song in this video. As for whether or not she yawns, I don't care about that. A yawn is just the bodies way to take in more oxygen than a standard breath. As long as they watch the clip, listen to the track and give their honest opinion/impressions on the content then it's mission accomplished. Also unlike many other reactors on CZcams which fake enthusiasm and pretend to like everything to appease people, lying to get more likes and subscribers...Jon and Ashtyn are more honest and will say if like or don't like something which I appreciate even when I don't agree with their opinions.

If I would grade your music videos reactions here,it would be Careless whispers by GM, Self control with Laura Brannigan,Small Town Boy by Bronski beat,Jarmiroquai, Cosmic girl,Land of confusion,Genesis, and the Boney M videos as well. Those are the ones I did enjoy watch..

I haven't heard that band name in quite some time...my brother had their "Blue is the Colour" album in the 90's. Thanks for reminding me of them.
Out of their songs if was going to add any to my future requests lists for Ashtyn and Jon to react to I would probably pick "Rotterdam" though since that's the one I personally remember hearing a lot growing up...in fact I'll just go ahead and add Beautiful South - Rotterdam to my future request list right now so wont forget to do so later.

I can't post this on CZcams directly due to copyright but they did do a Beautiful South song reaction for me while back so I will link it here if you are still interested in seeing it. The song was the Rotterdam one which I mentioned in previous reply to you months ago. drive.google.com/open?id=1GNcP7xMoeAY9-UbbwD0o_0LjoRacz0qG.

I'm not real big on "covers," but there's a great version of this done by Paradise Lost (if I remember correctly). It's a little more edgy.

I won't be doing anymore Take That and I'm still waiting on them to send me the videos I requested last tuesday, they are about a week behind schedule due to how many requests currently have that need doing. I'll upload them as soon as I receive the videos from Ashtyn and Jon, there's around 15 of them coming soon, I think within a day or two.

@@dragoonlordz Here, is a suggestion on a cool video, and song..one of my favs..czcams.com/video/vAq3iyDnCQI/video.html.. Phorever People with The Shamen..from 1992..:). Another thing, ABBA songs and videos would be super-great...timeless,ever popular songs...

@@krisa388 That video reminds me of M People, another dance music band from 90's. I do plan on covering 80's, 90's and early 00s dance music at some point but I haven't compiled a list of tracks yet for that type of music. It is certainly a genre and time period I plan to request though later.
The ABBA thing is a little more tricky because it's possible they might have heard their music before, I don't know many people who don't know who ABBA are. If/when I do cover ABBA I'll likely pick versions that had interesting music videos, basically I'll have to be more thoughtful about it so that way their reaction will be to something they've never seen before even if heard it before.

@@dragoonlordz I could make a list of incredible videos to show..that would be super fun to see reactions on..in a good variation too, from ABBA,the best group in the world as I see it,to George Michael,ZZ Top..Shamen,as mentioned earlier here,Eurythmics, and more..
