Dig deep into the origin story of Black gospel music, coming out of slavery, blending with the blues tradition, and soaring to new heights during the Great Migration. From Mahalia to Kirk Franklin, in the last century, gospel music has become the dominant form of African American religious expression and provided a soundtrack of healing and uplift to those at the front lines of protest and change.
Gospel with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. premieres February 12, 2024 on PBS!

Can't wait to see this! Hallelujah 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I ❤ this series so very MUCH! "Well done!"
I loved the one on jazz years ago and this another interesting genre to study I'm loving it already!!!.
Great comment! Yes: that would have been, "Ken Burns- Jazz," and agree totaly, was one of the most comprehensive bios and it also came to mind while watching the gospel series. HL Gates did his homework on this, one of the main tv events for me, enjoying it more then the Superbowl #100
@@neilsoulmanI personally own that one a friend gave it to me there's 10 discs.
@@neilsoulman I found this at the library and I still would buy it I really enjoyed it ❤.
@@neilsoulmanoh yes I didn't watch the superbowl myself 😂 this reminds me of the gospel music my parents and grandparents listened to.
SPECTACULAR!
I grew up with Bill Gaither. That was gospel to me.
I have to see this
I saw the documentary and loved it. However, I wish that the show had included a segment on Christian Rap. According to the point of the show, Gospel has been pushing boundaries and forcing ppl to constantly expand their notion of what is Gospel. Also, preaching and singing have been intertwined. Kirk Franklin was the first person to introduce hip hop to Gospel. Lecrae and other Christian rappers should now be considered a form of Gospel music.
I did too I randomly found it at the public library they purchase a lot of these pbs documentaries ❤.
I agree Kirk faced a lot of backlash that was mentioned on here the traditional gospel fans weren't ready for a change.
Kirk wasn’t the “1st” but he def pushed it to mainstream. There was Christian rap back in the 1980’s. Even the Mississippi had a rap segment on an old album.
How can I buy the song ‘My Journey to the Sky’ by Celisse and Alexis Morrast? It was the song at the end of the first episode. Wow! 🤩
I enjoyed watching and listening to this Gospel story. Can’t wait for more!
Yessss it was beautiful.
Seeing her on the guitar reminds me of Sister Rosetta Tharpe
💖🙌
I missed this by one day will this be available to purchase 😢??.
I sure hope so!
I've seen the whole thing I found it at the library I finished watching this today.
How can I watch this if I'm outside the US?
Does anyone know the date this will premiere? What day this month will the series air?
Take us home, Brotha👈🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

But of course he has to have non-Christians speaking for us to give it the 'one world' bent he always pushes.
who says their non Christians? he's showing the connection &common thread that gospel is within the black community.
He doesn't have anybody speaking for "us". They're speaking for themselves, from their perspective. This special isn't about Christianity, it's about Gospel music. If you can't comprehend that Gospel music transcends religion, and affects many from all walks of life, then continue to live in your limited world. Their are non -Christians, atheists and agnostics who appreciate Gospel music. Grow up.
