Exploring what is Grimdark with this Blood Angels scheme. I like to experiment with new ways of painting, this time aiming for a more scale modelling inspired approach on a Space Marine, aimed at a "grimdark realism". We are also looking at ways to adapt this to "faster" painting. Let me know what you think!

Hey so i know this is an older video, but i love this grimdark look, its amazing, and ill be doing it for my Blood Angels for sure. The thing is, i also have Sanguinary Guard.....and Dante...meaning lots of gold....so i was wondering if you could do a grimdark video for a gold coloured marines: Sanguinary guard, Custodies, stuff like that. I'd love that very much, especially now with Custodies being very popular. :) thanks.
@@itz_magic9976 doesn't work that well with gold
@trovarion
im trying to apply this method on my Raven Guard, any chance you can do a video on getting similar results as this with black on black?
@@dangerouslycheezy5429 I have a video about a black templar version of this, you can apply it to ravenguard.
This is the missing link between beginner and master level. It's so hard to find such good, detailed display entry level tutorials. More of it, please. Happy to wait if they need longer to make. 🤘🏻
Crusty, dusty town, population: this guy
very nice matte finish
Damn it. I already have half of my army painted and now I want them to be this scheme.
Tell me about it, feeling the exact same way.
not too late for acetone or detol
Maybe make a leader or squad leader this theme?
@@vampy879 Maybe not acetone, as that melts the plastic minis.
@@vampy879 most likely you can adapt an existing paintjob to this...maybe darken the edges. won't have the super nice buildup effect, but can still look great.
This is, by far, the grim dark interpretation I like the most.
This is the most palatable explanation of grimdark I've ever heard. This video was fire.
I love how you talk about when you progress to a certain point you 'stop thinking in boxes' of like "I have to take X steps to finish this part of the model". I've noticed only recently that instead of dissecting a model it into these 'boxes', I can just start and go with the flow. It's a lot more relaxed!
This is an absolutely amazing show of talent from you as usual. This is EXACTLY how I imagine grimdark, not lacking in colour but realistic. I'd love to see a series like this where it takes the traditional schemes of most armies and does this. Especially for colours like black which can tend to be very bland or hard to highlight.
I love the look of this model. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
As a big Blood Angels fan I really like that look! Nicely done.
Fantastic video as always. Hope you enjoy creating them as much as we enjoy watching them
This is an absolutely perfect style to use for my new chaos knight army, thank you so much!
I love the gritty feel of th e mini. Thanks for the tutorial!
I love the process and finished product. I keep meaning to get back to stippling as a skill to practice. Maybe now is a good time to do that.
Amazing paintjob and very good tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing!
Great tutorial, I really appreciate the way you explain your thought process and why you do the things you do
Wonderful video Chris, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you experiment and create such a worn and dark model, so cool!!
I love this scheme, and am definitely gonna adopt some of the stippling techniques into my own marines
Very interesting approach, it very changes from your more "traditional" style.
The explanations are short and precise and you show what you're doing. Love it.
Excellent instructional video! Awesome technique to achieve a weathered appearance! 🙌
What an amazing model! I want to try that technique now!
Im so glad for glad the algorithm suggested this channel, its was a great tutorial, you've got a new sub.
Love this paint job! Definitely off to try out the techniques.
Enjoyed this video. Even when I don't think I'll paint a spacemarine anytime soon, the way you applied things you knew worked and other things which were new to you to, was an interesting watch!
Im going to steal this look for my first space marine. I know it wont be anywere as awesome as yours but still. Thanks Trovarion, youre an awesome artist, and a great source of inspiration.
This was such an incredible tutorial! I'll have to watch it a couple more times to understand the technique better, but definitely gonna try it for some grim dark dark angels! Really excellent work, thanks for sharing!!
This tutorial is so easy to follow and tweak according to which chapter or army you are painting, amazing work.
Great video! My impression is that these methods make painting much more enjoyable. I will definitely try this guide for an Exorcist SM 😃
Take all the time you need bro,
thank you for the great vids.
Great stuff. I like seeing this done with as few mediums as possible; no messy set up and teardown, no harsh chemicals, no airbrush.
This has to be one of my favorite "gram dark" interpretations. Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful paint scheme. Keep it coming!
Yes MASTER! Please do the BLOOD ANGELS series, thank you!
This is definitely what I think of with grimdark, really great to see it without any oils/grime (and brush as much as possible), top notch stuff
I love this scheme.... I have looking so long for idea of my BA. Thank you!
Best Blood Angel tutorial I've come across!
This looks so amazing! so effective, and doesnt feel SO intimidating to try, cant wait to have a go.
A truely awesome scheme there, and the effects achieved in almost a 'less is more' way - only a few layers of paint applied a certain way, when the Grim Dark style is almost always seen as 'after the rust enamal wash you then want a grease wash, and later there will be a dirt and grime enamal wash. Finally a smokey oil paint to grease everything. Then Pigments.'
And as a big fan of yours, please only release videos when you feel they are ready. No need to rush them to meet a deadline - reminds me of an advert for Grolsch Lager we had in the UK - Quality takes time, these things cant be rushed, only drink it when it's ready (perhaps your voice put me in mind of it!)
I had found only in the last year that painting a bit over the decals is highly important to blend them in a bit more, thanks for pointing this out. This is a fine document of the grimdark distressed look. Ultramarine and Imperial Fist would be interesting for the remaining primary colours. Rust with yellow would be interesting to do right. Thanks!
Amazing video. Super informative tutorial and a lovely pace!
This is stunning. Can't wait to give this a try
I love your Blood Angel. Respect what you can do here. Damn, I'll do my best to implement your tips.
I know this vid is 2 years old but I just tried this with a little twist of my own and I'm in love with it. Thanks so much
Thank you so much can’t wait to give that a try. Curious to see if a white scar in this style will look decent. Anyway I can foresee myself trying this on my orks for sure.
Well sir, I have been looking for a method for a grimadark painting for my BA and I had a lot of results, and your video is (by far) my favourite.Thank you for sharing your amazing work, I will try to get some results too !
Wow man. A masterclass as ever. What a talent!
Great stuff! This could be my preferred way to paint my army in the future
Maybe a kill team. Painting at army at that level would take an eternity.
Really great informative vid! Going to try and adapt this to my desert marines. 🔥
Really interesting effect. I feel like the increased blackline effect and highlights create a more rounded armour at the end.
Love your vids as always.
I’ve been looking for a style I like for my BA as I’m fairly new to the hobby and I have def found it. Very excited to try this
Your tutorial is brillant and the result you achieved, outstanding! Thank you for showing the path! 👍
thanks!
I've watched this video probably 5 times now...great video and thank you!
Absolutely fantastic paint job. Inspired.
This is my favourite blood angel… I love how the technique builds a texture. Defo want to try this and is more akin to modelling I’ve done for 1:35 tanks. Thanks 🙏🏼
This is amazing. I will be following this video to paint my Flesh Tearers. Really excited to try something new! Thank you.
Marvelous Video Uncle Trov!
Huge Blood Angels fan, totally in love with this finish, well done 😀😀
Yeah, this is seriously great, kudos sir. Would love to see one for Dark Angels.
I loved watching you do this live. I used a brush to stipple a red/black scheme on a half-fiend Behir about a month ago, so it was awesome to watch you refine the process for me! You’re awesome and your content is top-tier!
thanks bud!
such awesome paint scheme
Thank you, I have been taking more time painting and enjoying it, even though I batch paint, and this is very similiar to my paint technique for my salamanders, mine is just in reverse with green over a red/dark brown prime, chpping medium, green then chip the green, paint the rest of the minis base coats, then apply dunkelgrau, with a tweezer and sponge on the edges, go in and do details and chipping. Thx for the vid.
Great video, I did a similar thing to highlight the armour on my Ironjawz using just reds. They don't have the same weathered and battered effect, but it helped to add texture and some volumetric lighting at the same time.
Thank you for an amazing video. I think its great that you show what you can do with a pencil and NOT an airbrush.
100% agree with you over the slow painting
This is amazing. Definitely inspired me to try this style on my BA.
Loving this style... because Blood Angels! Also would be great to see your take on a Tau Crisis Suit, something not Imperium or Chaos. Like you, I always try to use my brushes over anything else, though you are leagues ahead of me with the skills. Awesome videos as always!
THANK YOU for including you process for the base. I hate basing and need easy but good looking results. Most of my minis are on plain black bases because "I'll do them later"
I’m very new to the Warhammer lore and games and this is so inspiring. I really want to get started on some Lamenters in this theme!
phenomenal video, I am going to try this on one of my angels.
This is definitely what I would consider grim dark. Love the video - this is incredible.
Looks great I reckon a grim dark marine series would be lovely. I would be very interested in an Ultramarines one.
It would be the exact same my friend: choose a dark colour that’s not blue, maybe even brown again for that rust look, then stipple in dark blue and stipple in lighter shades
Oh mate this is just perfect I'd been wanting to have a go at a Blood Angel this is what you make look very doable yet I understand completely how many methods and techniques this covers...brilliant video chum 👌🏻👍🏻😎
This looks so good! Good job!
The best BA scheme I’ve ever seen! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🔥🔥
Fantastic work as always!
I think what makes you a Next Level Miniature Painter is how you draw your viewers in with your technique of talking through your vision of what you want you want the project piece too look like and convey at the end All while showing your various techniques.
You Sir, ARE Next Level. Thank You for sharing as well as all your hard work.
Good stuff, I have a really similar scheme, I think I will try this technique.
Absolutely trying this out thank you for the video
This is really cool, man. Going to be joining your patreon crew; Very well done and I love your outlook of not being focused on speed or making a deadline. This is supposed to be fun, I already have a job ✌🏼
Love your tutorials dude they are some of the best on YT, as a blood angels fan I really like your style, I am going to give it ago
Thanks! And good luck with trying it out!
I would absolutely LOVE to see a Dark Angel version of this!
Amazing video, i have been eagerly following all the Grim Dark videos as you release them!
I am very curious how you would tackle Dark Angels because they have such a darker base colour. I find it tricky to wrap my head around without them looking like Salamanders...
Would you apply this technique but just start with a very dark base colour and work up to something that is still fairly dark? Or would it work better to treat it as black and use the style from your Black Templar video? Curious if any other Trovariates have some input?
just came across this particular video (been looking at some of your other stuff for a while), gotta admit NOW i wanna try blood angels even though im a Black legion player! Ridiculously amazing.
To make the graphite stick you can lightly varnish between the layers with a matte spray varnish. You can do the same for pastels or pigment powder.
Look amazing! Well done.
Would love to see more of these grimdark projects
Amazing! I have an unpainted Salamander model for an inq28 warband and this method will be perfect for it
That looks awesome, I found those cheap small makeup sponge applicator things work really good and are tiny for good control
This is an awesome scheme & tutorial, thanks! I really like your interpretation of Grimdark (watched the Necron one a few days before this one and loved it).
I was also happy to hear a professional mentioning that that you have more control and prefer brush and acrylics. I have tried and experimented with the "products" approach but do not feel that I can achieve the result I want (mostly because of lack of control) and this confirmed my bias towards preffering the brush. There will be some experimenting with these techniques over the weekend for sure.
Keep up the awesome work
PS. Should do a Grimdark space marine series? Hell yeah!
Wow!... just wow. I like gritty space marines and weathering is a process I enjoy doing on my miniatures, but this is quite a refreshing take on the subject. I mean, the whole process is based around weathering and battle damage instead of it being another step as you said in the video. Hats off for this experiment and thank you for sharing it with the community. I must say your take on Grimdark and how to bring it to life on miniature painting is exactly what 40k is about to me - a story driven hobby, both miniature painting and tabletop gaming. A very dark story mind you...
I will be trying out your method on my next miniature. I play Raptors Space Marines (military green) so I have a feeling I can translate your approach on the blood angels to my own models. The fact I can't bring myself to paint with an airbrush also makes this video even more interesting to me. Thank you and keep up the good work!
so true @ 20:35. I enjoy painting a lot. My minis might not be the best jobs around, but I'm proud of my work. Its important to take breaks so that you actually enjoy your hobby. great video, i using this on my world eaters :)
AMAZING work! 🤩🤩🤩
That model looks incredible.
Definitely going to give this scheme a go
Looks fantastic.
I would really be interested to see your take on this style but for black armor.
Such a good tutorial… Thanks!
Fantastic paintjob!
This is awsome, this is the best "grimdark" style i've seen, and not to difficult to do. Just takes some patience. Truly fantastic. I'm going to see how this is going to work with Ultramarines & Imperial fists. Liked & subscribed.
This looks amazing! I didn’t something similar on my red corsairs Kill Team, but not as lethal as your work!
This style of painting is how I do terrain. It is also the best way to paint Orks and the classic ramshackle style. I’m glad someone of stature in the community is showing off this style and introducing people to the possibilities of painting without feeling like you have to paint a certain way just because it’s established.
