I've participated in extensive research in Spain, but with AEST ( the Spanish Association for the Gifted and Talented) and this is actually not true. The only reason for the Bell Curve is that women are better at masking, probably because of societal expectations. That's why less are diagnosed gifted, but also less are diagnosed autistic or any kind of disabled.
But, if one actually tests an entire school, the number of gifted girls and boys will be nearly identical.

Except that does not mean men are smarter than women. Just at the extremes you're more likely to find men. Those extremes do not affect the mode average though. Take sprinting for example, if we were to take Usain Bolt's top speed of 27 mph and say that is how fast humans can run, that is not an accurate value for anyone. Because that was just his absolute peak value in peak performance. So yes the human body is capable of running at those speeds, but for any actual human, they cannot get anywhere near that. Extremes do not apply to the overall population.
And the point about chess is not an indication of intelligence. Men naturally have better spatial reasoning and perception than women, this is why men outperform women in chess. But then when you look at linguistics, women tend to have an advantage over men. Intelligence is complex.
Yes at either end of the bell curve you find more men, but the average man is no smarter than the average woman.

But there have been women at the extremes too: Marilyn vos Savant, Marie Curie, Sophie Germain. I think that most women would contend that they are equally (if not more) smart, and that if there are more men in the upper extreme, it is because their gender has been suppressed, both culturally and historically. That philosophy has been the prevalent one, over the last couple decades, and I think we’ve seen a few things. 1) Women now outnumber men in college almost two thirds to 1; it’s not even close. The evidence suggests that on average, women are smarter than men, It also indicates that there has been change, which is important for the other observation, 2) men still make up the majority of the upper extreme. Thus women can’t really dispute that, without acknowledging that we’ve already seen significant changes, academically. Intelligence is complex though. Women tend to be smarter socially.
@@lraoux I acknowledged women can be found at the extremes, hence why I said you're *more likely* to find men. It is not due to social oppression, the smartest people in history were oppressed, that was not an obstacle. The reason why men are more likely to be found at the extremes is because of the sex chromosomes. Note the reason why I have been saying extremes is because that includes at the low end. This means that the least intelligent people are also disproportionality men.
Your statement regarding women being smarter is not backed by science, there is no meaningful difference in intelligence between men and women. Women have more empathy, that doesn't correlate to being able to read social situations which is a faculty of intelligence. Empathy isn't however.
