China manufactures athletes for the Olympics. It’s not like other countries where athletes choose their own path, become good on their own until they get discovered and pushed with sponsorship.
In China, they recruit through a government agency and the kids with potential are pushed. They get free room and board with the only goal being to train and win medals.
In most countries, there are athletes that return over multiple Olympics despite never medaling. That however does not happen in China. If you don’t medal, they drop all endorsements and sponsors immediately and you’ll never see that person again unless they defect and find new citizenship, but China typically won’t let their people leave under these circumstances.
China seldomly gives their athletes second chances and this was actually sha’s second chance to win gold. With other countryman winning, it’s likely China drops sha, her trainers, and even her teammates. That’s why so many in the crowd looked bummed. Because it wasn’t just shas livelihood riding on this match.

When the representative noticed the pacemaker was leading she forfeit the race, and went home with the team out of humiliation (apparently they have high expectations for her). This kinda makes sense even without clever editing.... I mean, it happened to that Chinese Gold medalist speed walker.... The favored female athlete dropped out (or dq'd) from the event after failing to keep up with her teammate (who won) and left with all of the coaches. So when the victor crossed the finish line, NO ONE from her country was there to help celebrate. COLDEST moment I ever seen! Look it up!

The coaches left because it was a complete shocker that she won. She was there to set the pace. In most cases, people who set the pace in early race can’t keep up and would have very bad finishes. Her plan was to take the lead, set the pace, and drop out after her teammate catches up. But since the team mate never caught up, she just kept going.

I also like to add that for any competiting world-class athlete, ESPECIALLY for the Olympics, it would be basic common sense for your team to STAY, no matter what role they have. As an Asian, I totally get what they said about "hindering her career". Well, I hope we change this mindset

I am NOT surprised they would treat one of their own like this. You worked hard to get to this point, go for that win, regardless of what they think of you....I'm happy for her.

Actually I went on and investigated a little. She is a beast in TT. And won three Olympics including 2024. Her opponent met her last Olympics where she defeated her. Yes...she is the most powerful TT player.

As a chinese that uses chinese tiktok I am severely disappointed in those that do this. If they want to do this please go to the idol sections and not sports, do they even know the word sportmanship? This is absolutely disheartening to see

No one is hating on her or booing her. She's just not getting as much support as the other athlete. People are entitled to have different opinions and support whoever they want. If i saw someone with 5 years of experience going up against someone with 15 years of experience i would also love to see the underdog outperform the more experienced player but that doesn't mean i harbour any animosity against the other person.

There have been other cases like this with China supporting only 1 athlete in that specific sport and the less popular/supported athlete won yet not celebrated.

I think the biggest reason why they were cheering for sun ying sha is because she lost against Chen meng in the last olympics, and sun ying sha is I guess more popular amongst Chinese people- But great job to both of them! Winning silver and gold for China!
