  • From the controversial Scrappy-Doo! to the lovable Scooby-Dum!, let’s take a look at Scooby-Doo’s now long lost family. We also take a look at the first season of Scooby-Doo! and Scrappy-Doo!.
    Because so many people keep automatically assuming I'm stupid - I did not confuse "ancestor" and "descendant" in this video. People keep insisting I meant ancestor as in "they're Scooby's ancestors" when that clearly makes no sense in context. The intent is they're descendants in the context of Scooby and the others are descendants of [Missing Link Doo/the beginning/the family tree/etc]. That so many people assume I would make this mistake is goofy as much as I love everyone who isn't being rude about something so strange.

    This sort of look back definitely is a reminder that the Scooby-Doo franchise had become so ridiculous long before the live action movies. Though Scrappy was admittedly overused back in the day he does deserve to be redeemed, perhaps in a movie where the gang randomly sees him again and his character is utilized well enough to help get rid of the hate against his character.

    I'd say the problem with Scrappy, at least initially, was his voice actor. They wrote the character more aggressively, sure, but that voice and line delivery made him very off putting. Don gave him a more gentle, childlike delivery, almost akin to Kermit's nephew Robin. But I'd say another issue is that it took them until the 80's to really give the character his due. Giving him more funny lines, having him play better with the other characters. Why, I'd say if Scrappy was as good as he was in 13 Ghosts, he would have been a more beloved character. That said, favorite family member hands down is Scooby-Dumm. He wasn't there long, but made an impact. Plus, to show how much WB hates Scrappy, they released a Dumm Funko Pop before they even bothered with a Scrappy.

    I genuinely always loved and always missed Scrappy. From the shows to Boo Brothers and Goul School he was very welcome to me. I was born in 2002 and had basically every great Scooby-Doo experience at my hands from the original series to What’s new. My favorite series was always Where are You and still is today, I honestly have a hard time liking any Scooby-Doo show that isn’t within that original realm of Scooby; The “New” Movies, The Show, some of the Scrappy episodes, Pup, and the 80’-90’s movies. While I’m closed off from a lot of the modern stuff as I no longer like it much, I always can come back to Scrappy and love the character!
    He brought so much energy and charisma after the shows admittedly started to lower in quality and needed something new. I never found him annoying or too much, he was just the right amount of fun! He was so helpful, fun, funny, brave, and super cool to me especially in Boo Brothers. I even hated the first film for a long time because of what they did to Scrappy, I still hate it and dislike most of the movie for other reasons.
    When we live in a world where people praise rude and narcissistic Velma form MI but hate on Scrappy to this day, I can’t associate with the general fans much.

      Haters of Scrappy need to accept one truth if nothing else, he is the only reason Scooby Doo made it syndicated through the 90s. CN started the anti scrappy initiative with their “sidekicks” Bumper and interestingly had “Velma” as the center of their cartoon universe… which is ironic because I think the one who will kill the Scooby Doo Franchise is Velma with this new Adult only Mystery Inc not included reimagining of her character. Scrappy had his annoying moments but he toned down over the course of the series, people really are just holding hate at the split up of the gang coinciding with The second half of the Scooby Doo and Scrappy show, never forgiving him for Fred and Velma and For part of the time Daphne leaving. Warner Brothers should be a little more appreciative of Puppy Power as it is the reason the series survived long enough for the brand recognition Scooby Doo has today

Laff-A-Lympics is great as a fun alternate HB universe show, but doesn't really offer solid additional full content of Dum specifically to check out just for him which is what I wanted to spotlight this time.

      It's complicated. I think most people would consider it main timeline since it doesn't deviate from any continuity, features Casey Kasem as Shaggy, and continues with the general format of the original vs something like Laff-A-Lympics that doesn't resemble the show or continuity, or ever get referenced as existing otherwise. The main timeline is fairly grounded and that show doesn't really make sense as something that could exist there, while What's New goes back to the basics of that timeline and grounded nature as much as possible while updating it for a 2000s audience.

    • @professorhaystacks6606
      @professorhaystacks6606 Před rokem +1

      @@Scoobytopia I meant more for the purposes of this video. I guess it didn't have extended Doo family so it wasn't terribly relevant?
      I personally would consider it mainline. Here are my criteria:
      1) It must not contradict previous mainline entries.
      2) It must EITHER
      a) Feature a member of the Doo family prominently
      OR
      b) Reference past mainline entries or be referenced by future mainline entries
      And perhaps controversially:
      3) Not feature supernatural solutions to the mysteries or problems at hand.
      I thus exclude 13 Ghosts as mainline, nor the movies where the monsters are real. That episode of New Scooby Doo Mysteries (I think it was) where real ghosts show up at the end is borderline, but I'll accept it. The ghosts are there, but they don't really affect the plot. Ditto Scooby Doo and the Loch Ness Monster: The real monster is there at the end, but he doesn't really affect anything.

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, the only relevance it would have to this video is a dog briefly appearing for one shot that looks similar to Dee but is not confirmed to be her whatsoever which isn't really much to talk about.
      Everything with Scrappy, his Seasons 2-4 and Boo Brothers, Ghoul School, Reluctant Werewolf, etc also have that border because they visibly appear to be the same timeline but diverge into real monster territory as well, so again, things just get complicated. Mystery Incorporated is the first time the continuity is really shaken up into a directly new universe that can be pinpointed so easily.

    If you were to ask me if I preferred the older shows or the newer ones, I would say I like the older ones better. Mainly because in the old shows you really get this sense of teamwork. For example, in the episode "The Spooky Space Kook", the gang finds the clues together, not just one person; Daphne discovers the grease that Fred determines is a clue, Shaggy notices that the food is fresh, Velma and Scooby discover gas in the exhaust of an jeep, Fred and Shaggy discover an extra set of wheels on the same jeep, and finally Shaggy and Scooby find the audio recording hooked up to the loud speaker in the watchtower. In the newer shows and movies, however, it seems Velma does all the work while everyone else deals with romantic tension and running away from the monster. They just don't seem like a team, instead feeling more like coworkers that don't hang out after work.

    Dooby Dooby Doo is clearly meant to be a parody of Prince not Elvis. Considering the episode was made during the 80’s this makes it even more apparent considering how huge he was during that decade. Also would’ve been cool to mention the Annunaki although I suppose that would fall under spoilers for Mystery Incooperated.
    This is quality Scooby content though. Glad I found your channel.

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  Před 2 lety +5

      At least as far as characterization, I would say Dooby falls closer to Elvis. With the music he sings throughout the episode, the style is pretty identical to Elvis' songs and distinct singing in addition to using the same kind of language in his speech and lyrics which hits more 50s than then-modern. If it was intended to be a Prince parody it would probably have a more clear Prince music style. Additionally, this episode aired before Prince had gotten big enough to really start being referenced in this type of media, especially kids media, and when he did start getting referenced in cartoons in the 90s it was pretty different from something like Dooby.
      Including the Anunnaki seemed like too much of a stretch since the show, as much as it's my favorite Scooby series, isn't typically considered part of the greater Scooby canon and they aren't ever referenced as being part of his family tree outside of it the way Ruby appears in both Scrappy and A Pup, or his parents, etc. That storyline is more worthy of its own thing entirely with how deep it could be explored.

Back in the day I remember being so excited by Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo, however I think that HB made a serious mistake dropping Fred, Daphne and Velma and introducing the three comedy shorts, like the All New Popeye Show. I think that's why Scrappy gets so much hate, he's the symbol and a symptom of a 'malaise' era of the show. So maybe it's time to forgive, after all.

  • @hellqueendemo3637
    @hellqueendemo3637 Před rokem +3

    Unfortunately a lot of you are asking why they haven't done a family reunion and that would be because Scooby-Doo is no longer owned by who would originally was it keeps jumping hands in the short answer for the reason why they're not doing a Scooby-Doo family reunion is pretty much out of respect for some of the actors and actresses that did the voices behind some of the characters some of them are either retired in their late '90s to '80s or are even dead and unfortunately the ones who did the voices behind the famous Scooby-D is deceased.
    So it's basically out of respect that's the only reason why we're not going to see a movie be made because they want to leave it the way they were remembered.
    In a brief interview with one of the voice actors that is actually still alive that was recorded in a session around 2020. The voice actor said.
    "We would all like to do a family reunion where we go back to a more classic and simpler time but the fact remains that some of my comrades and compatriots that I did the show alongside are long since deceased.
    Another Factor we would be worried about is the older fans if we brought people who have never done the role before only to take the voice up for one movie fans all over would be outraged at the fact we decided to make this decision.
    Therefore while I cannot speak for most a movie with the family reunion is most likely never going to happen"

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  Před rokem +2

      I think long time fans interested in a revival of those characters at the very least would be open to someone taking over the role if done respectfully. It's been done for every character in the gang except for Fred, and outside of that, Vincent Price's death hasn't kept Vincent Van Ghoul from returning from that same era. Maurice LaMarche's take on the role in things like Mystery Incorporated and the 13th Ghost film this past decade still allowed the character to live on in a franchise where characters never seem to age even as they lose their beloved voices. If Scooby himself can be continued on without the late, great Don Messick, his brothers, cousins or others could surely be done with the same respect and love. Though with the current CEO seemingly having no interest in the franchise anyway, all of that is moot.

      @@Scoobytopia well it also doesn't help with the current standards of today's cartoons getting the old time fans back would be hard.
      And with all these failures that have been being released lately movie TV wise and all the cancellations that keep occurring I feel though as it's not the right time to bring the characters back maybe in a year or two possibly but given the world's state right now I don't see it being feasible.
      Because if they brought it back but as you said if they did it respectfully then be completely different but the problem right now is a lot of studios just don't care and will do things unrespectfully.
      And I'm not saying that the studio would do that but I am stating that right now with everything going on it's more possible that it would hit heavier than it would say 5 years ago.
