She just took over when Steffi had accumulated enough terrible losses. Between July 1990 and January 1991 Steffi suffered her ONLY slam losses ever to A) Garrison B) Sabatini C) Novotna. Seles just took up the pieces, became #1 without a fight (would lose 5 of 7 matches as #1 against Steffi!).
@@samprovenzanorptr A Golden Slam, 22 slams, 7 Wimbledons, 2 kids, a heartthrob as husband? What has Seles? 9 slams and a walking corpse as husband…. 😂
Monica was a kid here. She played her 1st full year on tour in 1989 at just 15. She was still very inexperienced in the early 90s. The fact that she won so much was very impressive. Unfortunately we never got to see her peak because of the stabbing. She was still improving, as evident by her improved serve in 1993 Australia open finals. She was likely going to get to her peak in early 1994, but unfortunately we would truly never know what would have happened. In my opinion she's one of the all time greats along with Serena, Steffi, Martina and Chris. Her influence on modern tennis is undeniable.
What a year for a 16-year-old. Defeats the then-GOAT Martina on 3 different surfaces, defeats a future GOAT & then-no 1 Steffi in twice in straight sets (including thrashing her in a little over an hour in front of Graf's home fans & simultaneously giving Steffi her 1st loss in over 11 months & 66 matches), & then takes out peak level Sabatini in the first 5 set women's match in decades. She wasn't even through puberty. Incredible.
You can't count Monica's win over Steffi in Berlin 90! Three days before the final the nasty Graf Blackmail Scandal exploded in the national tabloids. I think Seles under the same circumstances would have committed suicide (considering how hard she took even a minor stab wound 3 years later!). In the next 4 slams Steffi would suffer her ONLY losses ever in slams to A) baby Seles B) Garrison C) Sabatini D)Novotna I think that was the worst nose-dive ever of one of the greats, here caused by off-court problems. But kudos to Monica, how she exploited Steffi's woes was top-notch!
Even if 1990 wasn’t as glorious as 1991 and 1990, it’s the year when she had a perfect record against all the top players, leading H2H against all of them.
@@thomaslamarque1507 Because Steffi would have won it without the nasty Graf Blackmail Scandal right in the week of the Berlin tournament. And we all know that "would" counts, don't we?
Fantastic run by Monica - she said in 1991 that it would be just too much pressure to try and repeat 6 in a row like she had in 1990. The 1990 Lipton tournament seems to have been the turning point and given her a huge amount of confidence - Monica had had some shock losses in early 1990 (straight sets loss to Fairbank in Chicago in the first round, a strange 6-3, 6-0 loss to Navratilova in Washington and then losing to Gildermeister in Boca Raton). The 1990 Lipton had one of the weakest draws it's ever had. No Graf (long term injured with a broken thumb), no Navratilova, no Sanchez-Vicario. Top seed Sabatini lost early, as did second seed Zina Garrison. Interestingly, after Monica's 6 tournament win was ended by being upset at Wimbledon by Garrison, her form went down slightly again. She had the massive shock loss at the US Open to Ferrando, and then another shock loss to Frazier in Tokyo. She then took a month off which seems to have really recharged her batteries, and came back to win Oakland and the tour finals to end the season on a real high and taking the #2 spot from Navratilova.
The Greatest of all time. No denying here. She smashed them all, beating Navratilova in that fashion in three finals in that year and outclassing a prime and reigning world no.1 Graf in back to back finals on clay, including RG, as a kid is the greates achievement in any individual sports. The undisputed Queen of tennis only stoppable by an attempted murder 👑 But God saved her ❤
Yes, Seles that year "outclassed" a Graf who would lose her only slam matches ever to 1) Garrison (Wimbledon 90) 2) Sabatini (USO 90) 3) Novotna (AO 91) within the next 8 months. Surely was "prime" Graf. You clown.
Seles was on her way to Win 25-30 Grand Slams and becoming GOAT. She was Unstoppable in her teen years. Then that Horrible Stabbing in Germany by a crazy Stefi Graf fan happened.
Steffi was on her way to win 35-40 slams. Sadly the nasty blackmail scandal and trial derailed her career. Seles was quite good as well. Could have won tons of slams after Steffi‘s retirement from 2000 on.
Seles could have returned to the tour 3 months after the stabbing. She chose to take off for 2 years, and got terribly out of shape. Petra Kvitova had a much more career-threating injury after being attacked and she was back on tour in 7 months. The fact that Seles didn't pick up where she left off when she eventually decided to return speaks to the fact that she was never destined for greatness over the course of her career, only for a very brief span of time. Remember: H2H will forever be 10-5 Graf.
And STILL a slumping Steffi had a BIGGER lead in the WTA rankings at the end of 1990 than Seles EVER had in 1991-93 when she was #1. In 1991 Steffi's slump got even worse, she played only her 11th-best (!) season of her 15 full career seasons. So Seles was virtually gifted the #1 position. Still the great Steffi beat Seles up in their two matches that year!

Yes, fans really felt with her during the nasty Graf Blackmail Scandal. Which cost her at least 5 slams in 1990-92. Heck, the woman was winning 3 or 4 slams per year before and was on track to collect at least 35 slam titles until 1999!!
