Had a privilege of meeting Jimmy Gathu in the late 90's early 2000's. He is the most hard working, humble dude I know. He never let pride creep-in. Jimmy & BigKev are/were the godfathers of Local Music while at Capital FM. Jimmy is not only a media personality, but a visionary. They demystified Capital FM and made it Kenyan. He is original, can never be copied or replicated. More wins Jimmy!

Your professional voice on TV and style of presenting news will forever remain in our hearts. These days media 🏘 are jokers. They call comedians news presenters as if all viewers are teenagers. We miss Kathleen Openda, Kasavuli, Jimmy Gathu, Mboya, Mwaura, etc on TV.screens. These fellows were born to read news: voice, style, etiquette....very professional.
We are left with Lulu and Nimrod. If they quit, some of us will read standard newspaper. These days newscaster are a big joke. Language issues, lack of etiquette, lack of professionalism.

Jimmy the journalist came across as decent, creative, passionate and humble which this interview demonstrates. He often reached out to me for radio interviews on State of the Nation and People's Parliarment. I worked in the area of human rights advocacy then. Among the lessons learnt, employment is not an until death do us part affair. Always have a back up plan and know your worth. However, I understand how blind we can be when we are winning accolades and raking profits for the employer. Learn to live within means, invest progressively and save for a rainy day. Thanks Jimi for being bold enough to share your journey. All the best.

Tuesday - Kass Kass - Lingala
Wednesday - Rastrut - Cool reggae vibes
    Thursday - Jam-A-Delic - Pure RnB
Friday - Rythmix - Blues for the lover boys n girls
Saturday - Club Kiboko - this was hosted together with the late Lorna Irungu. An A-Team it was.

Great memories. But its a pity that, even after mentoring and raising all those talents who are big in the media industry now, they didn't come through for you when you needed help. You mentioned even the heads of media houses like RMS and that owner of Radio free Africa, they also deserted you. What a life, its a lesson for all of us.

My key take homes from Jimmy Gathu's story are:
    - there's a difference between you (e.g. role as father & husband) and your career. He built his brand around his career. And he never let career expectations creep into his family life.
    - The need to keep up with industry trends and adapt. Try to do things differently. New skills, new thinking. He truly is a creative.
    - Work hard + network. This is how he got discovered. Jimmy's job moves were from his work speaking for itself.
    - Jimmy was strategic and he also knew how to attract and retain talent.
