So what can I tell you? How it started, So I got a message from a chap a couple of weeks back asking if I'd like to go and record his car collection. I obviously said yes, ! What an absolute legend of a man, not only does he have 2 sierra xr4x4s, But he has a turbo sapphire, a mk1 ford fiesta xr2 cabrio fly, But on top of that he only has a sierra RS COSWORTH Hidden away in some bushes, I mean really, You will not believe what you are about to see, This ladies and gents is a true gem of a garden fined, Sit back and relax whilst i show you something that's not normally found like this, What is noramly showed at car shows or is normally the apple of the owners eyes, This one has been nothing more then a second thought, This is a ford rs cosworth bush find....

Ford didn’t build a convertible fiesta. This would have been modified by another company. These videos are bringing back such wonderful memories of working for Ford. Happy days, thanks Stu xx
I'm 52 and always had fords back in the day. That's the first xr2 cabriolet I've seen in my life. Didn't know they existed.

By the end of the Crayford Cortina Mk.5 production run, Crayford had only the Mercedes convertible with power hood in the pipeline, Crayford had steadily moved up market, but now the big manufacturers, Ford and VW, had rediscovered the convertible market, XR3 and Golf cabriolets began to flood the market at reasonable prices.
Crayford needed an inexpensive convertible that they could sell in numbers, and so decided on a two-pronged attack over the winter of 1981. They would split the factory into two teams, David McMullan would develop a Fiesta convertible and his partner, Jeff Smith, would develop the new mini metro into a convertible.
Ford had introduced its first small car in years with the Fiesta in 1976. And so David McMullan came up with the Fiesta Fly, the name means a fast lightweight open carriage. The Fly had a welded-up, closed boot, making it light and strong, all cuts were rust proofed and covered with a plastic sill so the car required no repainting. They even planned (against normal policy) to use second hand base cars to enable them to build a convertible for under £4,000 (based on a used car worth £2500), they even planned to hold off-the-peg cars in stock.
At its Westerham base, Crayford may have produced around 30 Mk.1 Fly convertibles, mostly on basic models from the 950cc Popular to the 1.1 & 1.3 litre cars. Crayford built two updated MK.2 cars, then they sold the whole project to Bournemouth based coachbuilders F. English. They were the largest Ford dealer in the county with a truck division producing coach built truck bodies.
F. English planned to build over 200 Fly’s a year, an early scoop was to get all Ford Sports dealers to take its new XR2 Fly model, they even produced a very slick brochure for the XR2 Fly and it sold well, quickly reaching around 30 sales. But again, the high spec of the XR2 pushed the price up to over £8,000. In the end, year on year sales of 200 plus conversions were not sustainable. F. English stopped building Fly’s and sold the manufacturing rights. The fly rights passed on several times, going around Europe, production carried on all the way up to the Mk.5, the Fly concept therefore lasted nearly 20 years.
The club register has 83 known cars, but as many as 200 could still be undiscovered. Beware of copies, they are easy to make, avoid any car with a roll bar.

around 1998 ish xr2 and xr3 where worth nothing, i had 3 mk1 xr2s parked next to each other and i did not pay more than £200 for one, loved these cars, i loved a sunburst red one with a straight through sportex exhaust, the gearbox between 1st and reverse could be a pain from wear, valve stem seals always worn on them, i would say the mk1 xr2 is my number 1 car of all time
Yes got to agree. Had all sport hatch cars at the time. But the mark one xr2. Was my favourite car of all time. Also had two blue a black and a white
i had blue and black, never had a white xr but i did have a white supersport 1300, i loved to drive back then, the cars smelled different back then,

I used to have a white xr2 MK1 and it was a brilliant car and the best fun toy I ever had so it's nice to see one again, I'm pretty sure that the soft top conversion was done by crayford but I could be wrong.

And then a mk1 1.1 pop plus was my first car, on a y plate .
That xr2 would make such a good car to take to shows.

Don’t understand how someone says they love a car and then just leave it outside or in a dereliction lean too. Each to there own but it doesn’t make sense to me!! Lovely fiesta though

It was bought as a damaged repair in about 1993 my mate rebuilt it and I did the brake pipes on it

My first car was a 1978 US Fiesta Ghia, so this car brings memories back across the pond as well.

Well said , people get slated when they hoard cars but no one mentions the ones who willingly gave classics into scrappage schemes knowing theres no way back for the car

Blue bumper insert was on the xr4i (2.0 dohc) and xr4x4 (2.0 dohc and 2.9v6) from January 1990 face-lift. When the tinted rear lights and clear front indicators, revised dash and trim. Red bumper inserts on the LX, GLX and GLS Jan 90 face-lift

Crayford also made them. Never liked the convertible v I don't think they fetch as much as a hardtop either. Cos worth I would cheeky bid on.
I read about a company in Kent commissioning 200 of these but have been luck enough to have seen 1 in real life massive XR2 fan having each models back in the day 😀

Fiesta Fly 30 were made with 200 originally planned .Beware of copies if you find one with a roll bar in it then it is not
Original. They seem be up for sale at £8000 plus. I would clean that up get it tip top and sell it. It has survived really well .

Best thing to do would be weld a proper roof back on to the poor thing ( not possible but this model was not popular as had the structural rigidity of a box of tissues!) lovely clean condition under the bonnet)
No way bro!! XR2 has a North East reg UTN but also Jennings group plates where I used to work!! 😮 Very clean little thing! Needs recommissioning for the summer 👌 4x4s need sorting, even the parts car could be built into something .. Sapphire bonnet 👍 seriously cool collection!!

Back in the early/mid 80's we used to occasionally see an ordinary Fiesta Fly when we walked home from school. But the biggest thrill was the rare times we would see a convertible Capri. Then in the very late 80's, one of the local hoodlums chopped the roof off of his immaculate white Jag XJS and converted it to a soft top - there was a gap at the top of the windows because he'd removed the frame around the top of the doors ! He never went out in it in the rain !!

Ah what a dam shame these lovkey classics left to rot grate find.. I've owned lots of ford's most hot hatches the stripes on that 4x4 i used to do that on the xr2 xr3 and xr4x4 I owned basically colour code the bumpers ans side trims with different colours used rolls of trim tape the 80s and 90s the best ever.... keep finding these cars mate...

There was never a lot of soft top mark ones around. When he said not driving well mine use to rip the bottom engine mounts. They was so easy to change. And also mine would rip the centre joint on the drive shaft on pass side they had a different set up on the long drive shaft that would go. then would drive bad. Had two blue mark ones a black and a white. You was always able to know if it was a real xr2 back in the day as there was so many look alikes around my way. Due to the bulge in the back below the bumper for the spare wheel to fit in the boot.
It's been great seeing all these cars ( my era) I hope he gets to do them all soon as we're not getting any younger 😅

Such a great find storing it has definitely helped save her , I don't think ford ever made the convertible MK1s it was usually a company called crayford that did the converstions
Stokez, I have a bandit 600 ,black .lot off work put in to it .but broke my stump so will never be finishing it .there’s vid on here and you can see it ,have the red frame aswell ,27 k miles .needs about an afternoons work ,if you want it you can have it , cheers Edinburgh ,

The J reg XR4x4 isn't on a private plate. I used to have a Granada Cosworth hatch which wore J875 VNO.
The 3dr cosworth lives outside and the sapphire diesel lives in the shed lol
