Harley Davidson Pan America 1250 -

- After trying the Harley Davidson Breakout, one of the most Harley of the Harley’s, I wanted to have a go on the most unlike Harley of them all, the Harley Davidson Pan America.
The bike sits in a place where conventional Harley follows are not going to like, the adventure market. Those that like the adventure bikes tend to be a little anti Harleys. This, coupled with some irritating problems with the early models, make the Pan America a tough sell. But what’s it like?

Clearly, they've lifted the quick shifter straight out of a 1945 Field Marshall, in the days of Anglo-American fair trade
I must congratulate you TAYM on the cover photo. Truly marvellous 👌
Sherbert Fountain 😊 loved those. They were a bit dangerous though. When the liquorice was gone and the sherbert out of reach, you used to have to tip your head back and tap the tube. If you were unlucky - as I invariably was, you'd get the whole lot down your throat at once. The next two minutes you'd be gargling and coughing, struggling to breathe and foaming at the mouth 🎉
Absolutely 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 thanks for the Sunday morning giggle 😁
There you go mr.TAYM! You’re a Harley man now😄😄
😂😂😂😂😂
That is the worst exhaust sound I’ve ever heard on a large capacity motorcycle🤣Great video with a heavy heavy bike!
The best sounding large capacity adventure style bike I have every heard was my Triumph 1050 tiger 😁 absolutely wonderful 😁 thanks PO 😁
I totally agree… it sounds like one of them low budget small capacity twins that the Chinese make 😂😂😂
Could I tell from your commentary that you were a lot more impressed by the Breakout? Filtering with the boxes fitted might be a bit challenging, me thinks.
Quick shifter seem to select gears with the same recoil as a shotgun, as all Harley's gearboxes seem to do (I have had three new Harleys in my younger days) and they leave you in no doubt that a gear has gone in!
It's an interesting bike non the less and good to see Harley having a go at something different from the cruisers they are renown for. Good review.
😂😂😂 well the breakout is something special I think 😁 yes, like triumph, you are left with no doubt as to whether you are in gear or not 😁 thanks U😁
Good review TAYM great bike for a long journey. Thank you
Thanks GCK 😁
G’day Taym. Unfortunately I only have time to watch this Harley mutter up to your walk around as I am currently at work & must get back to it 🥴. Will watch the remainder wanna I knock off around 3:00 tomorrow morning 🤪. Anywho just want to say I am a little concerned that you might be going over to the dark side, these Harley’s have a habit of doing that to some🤣🤣. As you know I do regret selling Pepper, my beloved ultra classic. However the 120 Anniversary interceptor has arrived & is booked in for its fist service tomorrow. Will send a snap of it shortly when it’s parked next to the GT. & Tribute. Hooroo for now👍😎
😂😂😂😂 normal service will resume shortly 😂😂😂 exciting, what a collection 😁 thanks NW 😁
Nice to see something different instead of all the hordes of GS CHARLIES
Absolutely 😁 thanks R😁
Always an unbiased review.
Still an HD is overrated and overpriced.
So many better out there that don't break the bank.
Masters of marketing for sure 😂.
Yep 😁 thanks JT 😁
That's absolutely great and awesome twin bore bigbike bro
Thanks R 😁
Well TAYM you seemed to be quite taken with it ...more so than the 'traditional' Harley from last week?
In design It has a certain brutal charm, a bit like a giant Himalayan in some ways , a 'built for purpose' vibe about it.
it has It's work cut out building a fan base though, as you said most Harley fans won't be after a bike like that and many non-Harley people have a built in reluctance toward the brand so the question is who will buy it ? ........ You maybe!🤣 .. If I was in the market for a big adventure bike I'd certainly consider it.👍
I agree, it brutish charm is equal to that of the himmy 😁 if I had the dosh I would have one I think 😁 thanks DJ 😁
I for one think it a great looking bike, but then I think the Honda NT1100 is a great looking bike 🤣 I would have one in a heartbeat but like all of these big Adventure bikes they are not cheap. Would love to see this as your winter bike.
Thanks BV 😁 yes, they both have the duck face but are both effective at doing what they need to do😁 would love it as a winter bike😁
Harley Davidson have done well to make a useful adventure tourer that has attractive and not over-the-top styling👍👍 . It is my favourite Harley. By the way, I didn't feel the buffeting and I enjoyed the water cooled headlamp 😂(sorry!). An American with a big rack....What is not to like?
😂😂😂😂😂 thanks GBD 😁
I got a chance to ride one at a demo day and it's a good job Harley did on an ADV (stepping out of their comfort zone).
That being said, with all the hype I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be. The sound wasn't what I expected from a Harley. I guess I was hoping for more soul like a Ducati and not a VStrom 😅. It was a hot summer day and when the radiator fan kicked on my right leg was uncomfortable hot. That alone was the experience that turned me off of it. Could have just been the one I rode though. The looks have grown on me over time and I'd consider giving another one a try in the future.
They've got some great reviews and are worth trying if you're in the market for that style of bike.
Yes, I think the question is, is it just another adventure bike or is it a Harley 🤔 for me, it certainly isn’t the Breakout but is very similar to the other ADVs I have ridden. But as you know I like things that are different, not sure this is different enough 🤔😁 thanks DK 😁
I saw one of these at a HD Dealers the other day and thought they looked amazing but then again i think the Niken looks good so im probably in a minority!! 😂
😂😂😂 people should really ride a bike before judging it I think 😁 thanks Willie 😁
Morning TAYM I’ve rode one of these for 20 minutes and took it back to the dealership not my cuppa tea you can actually lower that suspension they did for me to big to heavy coming in 254kg wet I’ll stick to my F850 bmw I know where I am with that
Nice video 👍👍
Thanks Derek 😁
One of a few adventure bikes that doesn't have a beek. 😎
Thanks KT 😁 and I think it looks better for it 😁
@@TAYM Another thing that bugs me is that they have all that plastic beeks, and then only a front half of a mud guard. The radiator ends up full of dirt and rocks. 😡
@@kristophertrout7328 yep, front mudguards are defiantly shrinking, soon they will be like centre stands, only available as an extra 😂😂😂
The Pan America special is one of the adv. bikes I'm thinking of getting. I like the Triumph tiger, either the 900 or 1250. Also possibly the African twin, and, or, the BMW. I'll have to check them all out. I enjoyed this video. Cheers!!
Thanks DP 😁 you sound like a man after my own heart 😁😂😂
I've owned both. Sold my BMW to buy the Pan Am and have not been disappointed. BMW has some annoying traits that you did not hit on which have plagued the bike for years. Overall though, I thought your review was well done. The Pan Am is not perfect but neither was the BMW. I'm at 7500 miles now with zero issues. Overall what has impressed me most about the Pan Am is its ability to chew up miles without effort. What impressed me the least about the Pan Am and something Harley really needs to address is the size and placement of the rear tail light. Small and hard to see with full bags on the bike. Borderline dangerous. I rigged aftermarket LED's on my tail box to help with that. Otherwise, good scoot.

Hey TAYM ANTOTHER Harley you are fast becoming a Harley oficionado 😉I am not that into adventure styley bikes but I must say I do like this one it seems to have an interesting look about it and in black actually looks mighty fine ,all those electronics would worry me a bit tho it's just more for the gremlins to get onto if you know what I mean 😊. That Harley sound is abcent of course but even without it it's still a looker to me very tidy /neat in looks unlike lets say for instance the BMW Gs range .I could see Mrs TAYM liking this one. So chain drive and indicators on one awitch rather than one on each side then by the looks or did you already say that 🤣gettin forgetfull in my old age .👌👍
Yes, a very capable machine that was a pleasure to ride😁 thanks Crumb 😁

Thanks GR 😁 I really liked it 😁 if I had the money I think this is the adventure bike I would go for 😁
Bit of a theme happening...Harley Davidson fever I'd say.
😂😂😂😁 thanks DT 😁
Untill HE takes Thruxton out for a run😆😁😂🤣.
I was surprised to see it has chain drive.
Me too 😁 thanks SC 😁
Can't put a belt on an off road bike.
Never been keen on the looks know that’s subjective but not for me. Watch the MCN 2021 review, or towards the end at least where they talk about the reliability, or rather the multiple problems they had with it.
Yes, definitely had some issues😁 thanks SW 😁
Thanks for riding these Harleys so i dont have to.
😁😂😂😂😂😂 thanks Mike 😁
Another marvellous review, this time of a bike which is to say the least controversial 🤔🙄😯 Just like yourself it is amongst many that I considered, only I couldn't get past that hideous front end. I've no doubt it would make a great winter bike for yourself but for the money there are so many better options.
You have the measure of my thoughts 😁 thanks GW 😁
I'm looking forward to next year, april 1st. Honda are releasing the ScramWing. It's a Goldwing with a high exhaust pipe and knobbly tyres. It's going to be unbeatable.
😂😂😂😂 brilliant 😁thanks EB 😁
Blimey another Harley ! There's an HD epidemic in East Anglia .
I looked at one before opting for the big Tiger . Pound for pound [ weight ] , hp for hp , dollar for dollar and in several other aspects they are on a par with the Tiger . But Harley don't have much experience in the Adv bike sector and it becomes apparent when you look at where the radiator, voltage regulator , sidestand attachment etc are placed .
Looks are subjective , the front of this bike looks like my Grandma's old vacuum cleaner from the 1960s . Not something that I could live with .
Harley are good at putting lipstick on a "hog" but this is too much of a challenge even for Max Factor and Armani .
I think they have a good engine here and I know you were impressed with the handling , how are the gear ratios ? Does it have the ridiculously high first gear like the Tiger and the GS ?
Not a bike for the traditional [air cooled] Harley guy , the bike will appeal mostly to "Murican Adv riders who want to buy a home product . And there's nothing wrong with that .
Thanks DS 😁 first is definitely longer than the tiger but having not ridden the gs I couldn’t compare. I think generally the gears seem to have a little more length but some of that could be down to the v twin 🤔 I found it to be a good bike but think Harley have a tough sell to do due to prejudices 😁
@@TAYM . The Tiger 1200 gear ratios are almost identical to the GS , which makes me think that Triumph copied the BMW . Ist gear on the Tiger is too tall and the anti stall feature increases the revs , which means you have to slip the clutch if you want to ride slow on difficult terrain or in stop/go traffic . Very infuriating , I hope the HD doesn't have this feature . As for prejudices , surely not in this " Woke " age . 🙃🙃😉
Nice to be out on something different but cant see the point of ADV bikes for touring on the roads of Europe. Would rather a sport tourer like the Z1000SX or even a cruiser like the Sport Glide Freddie is reviewing which is amazingly cheaper than the Pan.
Yes, this why I don’t understand the fall of the traditional sports tourer🤔😁 thanks S 😁
I had the Pan Am Special for a year and a half and 11,000 miles.
It was awesome,...when it ran.
😂😂😂 yes that’s what I heard about the early ones 😂😂😂 thanks PW 😁
@@TAYM there is a gentleman in Florida that competes in Iron Butt competitions. He was was getting ready for the big event this year and his first Pan Am gave out on him. Admittedly he had a lot of miles on it being a competition rider so he got a new one, totally unreliable. So he had to withdraw from the rally.
I love Harley and in all my conversations with the company my advise was to take all the electrical garbage off the bike and just leave one switch for traction control, on or off. Then they would have a phenomenal ADV bike.
It’d be a 150hp T-7-like monster.
@@pinkiewerewolf interesting 🤔 very interesting 🤔😁 thanks PW 😁

never say never... I'd imagine it was a hard sell to the Harley loyalists and a hard sell to everyone else however, seems like great bike. I would say get yer wallet out but let's just face facts, you're a Yorkshire-man, albeit posing as a southerner 😁😆😝 - Hope you liked the email I sent you.
😂😂😂 yes, brilliant 😂😂😂😂
Nice one, mr. TAYM. Big lump of a bike for big lump of a yorkshire. I hope that I will never see you on that misapprehension of a bike - the monkey bike. Although, you will be like in a comedy cartoon on it. 🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂 thanks Stefan 😁
I reckon you’d have a lot more fun on a himmy on roads you are on today!
Very likely 😁 and a lot more achievable 😁
Big brute of a bike m8. Glade you enjoyed it. I've heard it has a pretty clever suspension set up. I've seen a couple in the flesh and they do look good.
Yes but the price of 4 TRK’s 🤔😁 thanks IT 😁
Looks like the terrible concrete roads on the way to fenland rural sports where i used to get ammo.
Maybe it was🤔 I had no idea where I was 😂😂😂😂 completely lost 😁 thanks Loki 😁
@@TAYM they go on forever in a straight line, no trees, just the 'bump, bump, bump of the joins in the concrete - not the most picturesque part of the country😆
@@loki1066 😂😂😂
How smooth is the quick shifter mate?
I found it a bit clunky on occasion but smooth on others. Not the best I’ve tried but then a lot of others are not consistent. 😁 thanks SJ 😁
Now if HD would make a entry level bike for new riders, as I was 23 years ago, I might have owned one. And I would have bought all the other t shirts and merchandise the sell. But there wasn't, and still have nothing for them as the gateway bike into the HD drug.
With the increase of scramblers today, they should have been the one that knocked it out of the park with that look, as they were the dirt track kings for so long. I guess they didn't get the memo.
I have a story about HD, and might have a video on that, know as I type this, that's a great idea TAYM! " why I have never own a HD" , coming this fall. It's funny, I see a spike of HD videos in creators in the last 2 years over season, as here in America, they are failing, and the HD community still is a live and well, but no one new into this hobby is buying it , as they can't afford one.
When you started it, I laughed really hard, that is not a HD. But it has stickers that state it is. Great video, good introduction for people to go look at one. Thank you, for sharing your experience and it sounds like you would rate it as a 7/10 by your comments. Maybe I should entertain the idea of riding one this winter!
It is an oddity but a good one and you have the score about right 😁 thanks LoY 😁
I’m not a Harley fan but was curious to see what your take on the beast was,as usual TAYM you’ve given us an interesting review with lots of great observations. I think you should continue your HD quest Sir TAYM & bring us a review on the New ‘Small’ Harley next as it is very different from what they normally produce. Cheers Buddy.
Thanks JD 😁 my understanding is that at the moment the 440 is not coming to the UK 🤔😁
Morning Mr TAYM. I just had a look at the prices on flea bay. They are well priced, especially compared to the opposition, and considering how well equipped it is. Not a bike for me, as I am not into adventure bikes, and that front end is f”ugly as …..😂, but I can see it being a brilliant mile muncher.
Thanks Ian 😁 definitely comfortable bike to do lots of miles on 😁
Goes hard out this new Revolution motor but the price 🤯🤬 is massive. You could get 2 really good bikes a Motoguzzi V85TT & a Royal Enfield road bike or Triumph Trident or entry level 765.
If you were going ride round North America & live off bike & only need one bike be a great choice. If living in house could get a V85TT or a Triumph Tiger 🐅 & a road bike. The Pan America is perfect for long trips round Europe,America.
@@ruahinesrider they are actually £2k cheaper than the Tiger explorer 😁
@@ruahinesrider non of these interest me, but looking at the prices of the competitors, Tiger 1250 £16095, BMW monstrosity £19000, This HD £16000. It’s competitively priced for the market it’s aimed at. Agree though that you could buy a bike (or almost two) which would do the same for less money 😂
@@TAYM should of said Tiger 🐅 900 Range 31k HD Pan America 37k NZ 🇳🇿 so not quite the 8k for Classic 350, Hunter close though 2k short.
A Motoguzzi V85TT is 23-24k so get a Super Meteor as well.
765 base model 19k.
HD has been selling heaps of the Pan America in the US to the Adv crowd which isn't surprising cause North America is a epic Adv country.
Gives Americans the opportunity to buy a HD Adv bike even if is built off sure.
When HD built the Street & said it was to be built in India
Americans revolted & said they wouldn't buy it so HD built it's own plant in America to just build Street 500-750 for US market🤣.Everyone else in world 🌎 got Indian built Street 500-750 & Street 500 in Ausie,NZ out sold 750 6-1 cause of licensing system.
Pan America didn't get same back lash cause it's not a road bike🤣.
I remember when HD were alot cheaper about 13yrs ago a 883 was 13k & a 1200 was 18k & HD did some remarketing & made HD dealers upgrade to a certain standard ie a lick of paint & new floor hot secretary & 883 was 18k & 1200 23k alot of people switched to Triumph & Triumph followed suit a couple years later but not as bad ad HD.
Very true 🤔
They cost just over 40k NZ 🇳🇿 so £20,000 something.I like the look of new Sportster S with same Revolution motor & showed the Harley boy's & all they see is the Radiator & most are oiled cooled or nothing HD types😂.Can't get anything smaller than 1700cc oiled cooled now that's why 883-1200 phased out to hard to get past emissions. You can get some low km 2018-2021 1200cc Sportster for about 16k NZ 🇳🇿 I looked at one but after sitting on it my back was no thanks which was a shame I did really like it & it wasn't black it was grey.My back is upright riding position only before I broke my back & I could ride cruiser for short time but wouldn't try a oiled cooled HD now after crash my jelly back be shaken to bits.Revolution bikes should be ok for vibrations for my jelly back but cruiser version Sportster S be no good after 15mins my body be wanting to stop.I think HD need to make a flat tracker bike like Indian did with FTR.
Did you ever adjust the windscreen? I found it odd that the Pan America, being designed for off-road as well as on, has more horsepower than the new sportster s with the same engine. You would think the street version would be as, if not more, powerful....but what do I know. 😂😂😂
😂😂😂 it is a little strange 😁
It's a very clever suspension set up but just something else to go wrong and cost a fortune. It has a lot of power but look at its face OMG!!! it's so ugly you could hang its picture above the mantle to keep the kids away from the fire 🤣That headlight looks like a 1960s Hoover do you remember the ones that used to light up for some reason. I've not heard one in real life but every single video I've seen of that Rev Max engine it sounds like a bag of spanners being dragged across a workshop floor. HOW MANY BUTTONS ????? mate I only know the on/off button on my telly remote so how would I ever remember what all that lot does ? ...........I don't think I'd ever get the road testers job at MCN 🤣🤣🤣
I call it the wide mouthed frog 😁😂😂😂 I wouldn’t know about tv remotes, Mrs TAYM doesn’t let me even look at it 😁
Dave couldn’t reach the handlebars on it’s side stand! 🙄🤣
Not too sure but I don’t think traditional Harley owners particularly like the modern water cooled engines either!
At least you didn’t think to say, I could pop Dave in a pannier! 😡🤣
😂😂😂😂
That’s also true😁
I thought it🤔 just didn’t say it 😂😂😂 thanks D😁
not my kind of bike at all for lots of reasons and as Rob Little and Bullet Wanderer both demonstrate, you don't need all those cc and that amount of HP to go touring.
Are you going to ride this again for a chance to win one?
Didn’t know about that 🤔 I shall look into it 😁 I am feeling lucky at the moment 😂😂😂
It looks like it was made by LEGO. 😂
😂😂😂😂😂 no you mention it 😂😂😂 thanks DS 😁
My problem is the air cooled Harley’s sound like Harleys but this sounds horrible or is that just me ? 😊
It just sounds like most other adventure bikes🤔 I think the plastics don’t help matters. But I know what you mean 😁 thanks Peter 😁
Gota put a different pipe on it if you want the harley sound
At least when you're riding it you don't have to look at that ugly front end!😉 Was there a sewing machine on the back?🤪
😁😂😂😂😂 thanks B 😁
You’ve tried the rest, now you have to try the GS - there’s a reason why ‘every w£@k£@ has one’ 🤭
GS wan@#er🤣 plenty of GS in Western Europe every 3rd bike.
@@ruahinesrider I love them, it’s only old age, bad knees and the weight (of the bike, not me 😉) that’s moved me onto an R NineT 🤣
I like them too but broken body doesn't agree with cruiser seating position & weight hence the light weight Trident 🔱. Nearly all my mates ride Harley Davidson cruisers.
I sat on Fatbob before I got Trident 🔱 & tried pushing it around it was a ankle breaker & back pain bike for my body.I was offered a grey 2019 1200 Sportster too at fair price but needed something lighter.
😂😂😂😂 would love to but they have not responded to my email 🤔 thanks TP 😁
😂😂😂
1st😂
Definitely on a roll 😂😂😂😂
About time one of the best built HD & Adv bikes with sport bike speed but the price🤯.
Knowing RR that would be sausage roll...and plenty of em.
Could own a V85TT & a Road bike for the price of one of these.
Well Taym you tried it, I know it`s subjective but I think the Breakout suited you better. If you like its looks maybe you should have kept the Tiger, won`t say I told you so, but I did......Engine sound put me off, aircooled wins hands down with H-D. In the clip, the best Harley is in the car park, the yellow/orange custom, I`d ride that happily and tour on it, just for the sound. Stick with the Triumphs Taym. 🚴🚴🏍🛵🏁
😂😂😂 thanks M 😁😂😂😂😁
