- This is a trip that I had been waiting to check off my list for some time now - a backpacking trip into the heart of the Bob Marshall Wilderness to do some fly fishing! Our adventure was highlighted by some fantastic fishing and stunning scenery. We also had a few scares including a fall down a bluff and a bear near our campsite! Overall, it was an experience that we will never forget and I am exstatic to be able to share our adventure with you! Hope you enjoy the video.

I’m 79 now. Never made it to the Bob. It was on my bucket list. I hiked and fly fished the Mission Mts. Which is a stones throw away. Thanks for sharing the video.
In 2015 i went on my first (solo) backpacking trip in NW Washington to a secret creek iv'e been dreaming about ever since my uncle told me about him catching 25"+ brown trout out of it when he was a kid. It was a 22 mile hike that took 3 days to do because it was so steep and rough! To this day it is the most beautiful place iv'e ever seen and the water was crystal clear! I spotted some absolutely massive Browns within the first few seconds of walking up to the edge of the creek. Only one problem... I somehow forgot to pack my tackle box which had my Fly reel and all my tackle. I laughed at myself so hard a cried and shrugged it off. I bought myself a new case that holds both rod and reel but i still haven't made it back there. love the channel guys!
Popping your hood keeps critters from building nests and feeling safe. Theyll chew on the electrical insulation because they use soy bean to produce it.
Took this trip for six days in1987 with three friends and a great outfitter. In on horseback. Best fishing trip of my life! I will never forget the trip and all its beauty, not to mention 50+ fish a day each. Got rainy near the end of the trip but nobody cared.
They leave the car hoods open to discourage rodents from building nests in the engine compartment. Many of those vehicles are parked there for days or weeks at a time.
Tail pack rats have been crawling into the engine compartments and chewed on the wiring. The open hood lets in light and the pack rats apparently stay away.
a dryer sheet will do the same thing. no idea why but it works!
Great video! In my personal experiences packing into in the BOB or in any areas with Grizzlies I try to avoid setting up camp in the river bottoms or drainage's because the Bears use them like highways to get around and forage for food as well as stalk the local Deer, Elk, and Moose who also use the river bottoms to get around and unfortunately a lot of the younger fawns or the older animals will drown when trying to cross the the rivers and creeks that are swollen from the spring and early summer snow melts and usually the carcasses end up down stream on some sandbar creek bank and the thermals that naturally follow the drainage's will carry the sent of carrion for miles so the Bears pick up on this and just cruise up and down them looking for the easy meal. Nearly every time I have encountered a grizzly bear in this area it has been in and around the river and creek bottoms. But again awesome video love seeing and hearing about what flies worked for you and what didn't! Keep up the great content!

About 45 years ago the fishing in the South Fork for Cutts and Bull trout was unreal. It is now over run with horse packers, hikers , and floaters. As far as bear issues go, issues with grizzlies are rare. If grizzlies are a concern then you'd better stay out of the Madison and Gravelly s , that' s were there bear issues happen. Back in the day, 40 to 60 fish days were common with Cutts averaging 14 " plus. Bull trout from 5 to 7 lbs were common . The Bob today is the Disneyland of Montana wilderness areas.
Sad to hear that. Yes we were really surprised by the amount of people up there. Still very desolate and isolated but a fair amount of traffic

I've floated the "South Fork of the Bob" five times now. Been packed in twice to the confluence of Danaher and Youngs (the headwaters of the South Fork) twice, twice to Gordon's Creek, and to Salmon Lake once. All unbelievable trips of a lifetime. If God gives me a few more years, (I'm 71), I'm doin'er again.

The hoods are popped to keep pack rats from nesting. A little bit of light deters them.
I had to do go live in the Bob Marshall for 17 days hiking and clearing trees off trails when i was 15. I hated fish until that trip. The cut throat trout was incredible

I worked for the forestry as a wilderness ranger out of spotted bear ranger station this past summer! I hiked all over the Bob solo for 9 days at a time. Awesome seeing some familiar spots! Great video!

I've also found it helpful and give me more peace of mind to keep all my fishing gear away from camp too and off the ground. From handling fish it actually carries more scent that humans realize.
Love it! I did a pretty epic solo trip in the Bob about 12-13 years ago. I also fished the south fork but much farther upriver above Big Salmon Lake. I hiked in via Holland Lake. It took two days one-way to reach the river but I was rewarded with killer alpine scenery coming/going and I fished the river for three days without seeing a single person. I caught so many fish it almost became boring. I also had great fishing in Big Salmon Lake for cuts and bull trout. Highly recommend this route if you head back and want a longer trip.

I did the same thing in '94. Hiked in from Holland, got to the top of the ridge and there was still a lot of snow on the other side (late June). It was quite steep. As I was solo I decided with disappointment to hike back out. Rented a car and went to Glacier. Caught some cuts at Avalanche Creek. Not the same. I still want to get back and do what you did but I'm 59. I can still dream... and watch videos!
Sir Winston, I hear ya! I was a younger man when I did this route. 2nd day down to the flathead kicked my ass! There is no shame in hiring horse packers to haul you and/or your gear. I was invited to a camp of a group that packed in on horses at Big Salmon Lake on Day 5 or 6. Boy was I happy to have steaks and beer for dinner! I finally did my first pack-in by horse trip this year in the Sierras (we hiked out) and I have to admit, it was really nice! A good option for the Bob.

To answer your question about the vehicles with the hoods up......................it's to keep Packrats/Woodrats from building nests in your engine compartment.

Lightweight hike pants, boots and even light weight gloves save a lot of discomfort...I live near Glacier and always pack my Glock 10mm also, overall you guys did great.
Mark Kerns how do you like that 10mm for bear protection? I hiked into the bob 2 years ago and spend lots of time in montana, just looking to stop carrying my 44
@@Tommy-og8gb It is the most firepower in the easiest to carry package for me. I have both chest and hip holsters and don't even know it is there. There are some great bear loads for the 10mm and the 15 round mag is a comfort.

Every summer from the time I was 5 until I left Montana at 19 to join the Navy, we hiked the BMW. One of my favorite trips was fishing the headwaters of the South Fork (Youngs Creek and White River). Good on ya for braving the bears!

A good tip in bear country is to set up a triangle, 200 feet from each, where you sleep, where you cook or eat food (don't do it near your tent) and where you store you food overnight. Never eat and cook food near your tent.

Good job boys! I love a good fishing adventure in the Bob. Some lessons learned I imagine. Good preparation makes for great opportunities. Very enjoyable vid, thanks. I've gone to the bear barrel system for food. No hassle with hanging, much easier to leave the food well away from the tent in any environment. Also doubles as a nice chair.
That sounds like a good system! It's really nice to have a decent chair too after a long day of hiking.
Great video of a very doable trip for many. One suggestion I can offer related to bears is to make your meals away or in a different area from your camp. It's kind of an inconvenience I know, but it can be a big help to make your meals even 1/2 mile from where you are sleeping for the night.
I also learned about packrats the hard way, had them literally invade my truck one night in the Big Belt mountains. I wasn't aware they had chewed a ground wire up against the firewall in the truck and about 3 months later it disabled my truck. Lesson learned!

There are some better bear precautions you can take. The food bag hang looked pretty close to the tree but could just be the angle of the shot. Grizzly bears can climb trees too. Look into hanging between two trees instead of from just one or the PCT hang method if you can get far enough from the trunk. Beautiful place! Thanks for sharing.

Lived in Montana for awhile always wanted to fish Bob Marshall but never could buy the time,however for those of you out there Who feel you haven't the time our resources for Bob Marshall Montana is a fly fishing paradise.I found in the time I lived there several absolute great streams to toss feathers at,so if you get the itch scratch it go.You don't have to join the crowds on the Madison to have the trip of a life time.
Fish the Flathead all the time. Best dry fly to use is a Purple haze in #12 or #14 in July and Aug.

@@BackyardBassin If you are tying your own, I suggest a PMX with purple body. This is a purple haze with legs, and works a bit better than purple haze. Best rig for dry fly fishing in summer is purple PMX (12-14) with small orange stimi (14) as trailer.

Fish tend to be stunted way up in Glacier and Bob Marshall area. Not much growing time with the long winters. Beautiful country though.

If parking at the trailhead for an extended foray into the wilderness, pop your vehicle’s hood and prop it up with a stick - with the hood down, the vehicle becomes a haven for packrats, which will chew through your electrical wiring.
Awesome video, really enjoyed it. Recommendation from a long time brook trout fisher: bring salt, pepper/lemon pepper, maybe butter, and tinfoil with you whenever you are trout fishing in the backwoods. Gut the fish, sprinkle the spices and butter, wrap the trout in the foil, and stick it right into the fire fro 10 minutes, rotating halfway. Cooks really well and keeps the moisture, plus you can put the tinfoil back in the fire afterwards, cook off the scent, and either reuse or roll into ball and pack out. You can also cook the fish without the tinfoil by having a flat rock and sticking on edge of fire, flipping the fish halfway just check the color change on the inside to know when it is done. That is how we have been eating our brookies for lunch in the backwoods of Northern Michigan for decades. Great video!

Those are the smallest cutties I've ever seen caught out of the Bob. Sorry for your luck guys but hey you guys still had a blast. I've caught some monsters out of there.

Loved the video. My brother and i fly fished the BOB summer 2019. Hiked 55 miles over 5 days. Caught a ton of trout. Just like you guys they were all smaller. I think the biggest was 13 inches. It was an Incredible experience and im hoping to go back again in the future.

hoods poped to let everyone know your still on the trail
I believe that the hoods up are to discourage Marmots. They get in enclosed places and chew up hoses and wires.

I was raised in Columbia Falls in the 50s and have done The Bob several times including last August. The river is crowded now days and the fish smaller. There are many better places to fish but the experience is great if you stay away from the South Fork. I came in from Holland Lake and the South Fort trail was closed due to a forest fire downstream. Others were waiting for me and I did not have time to fish. I wanted to get away from the rafting camp and it was difficult to get to the river. I did find nice fish off the river. Shoulda been there 40 years ago!
Oh boy. Your bear hang needs to be pretty far from the tree trunk my friend, grizzlies climb trees and are experts at pilfering. Great video

Some years ago, the auto industry changed wiring plastic to a new formulation, and it is actually attractive to to rats and mice. We went on a year long fly fishing trip in the west, and this practice was common. After hearing horror stories of new vehicles being destroyed (this is not under warranty), we did the open hood thing, placed moth balls in containers all over, and used solar lights placed under the hood and on the ground at night.

Maybe to prevent rodents from hiding up in there and chewing down your electricals? Happened to me in the city with rats and one of the things to prevent it is to leave your hood open. Although then you're inviting the rain and elements in...

We were told by a ranger that packrats like to crawl into tight spaces (the engines of cars) and sometimes they chew cords. People pop their hood to make their engine a little less cozy and warm. Thanks for watching!

This is a super fun place to fish. We replaced that timber suspension bridge up there and were there for a month. Have a video of it on my channel. Nice video!
I've had pack rats build a nest in the engine compartment in one night and I was sleeping in the truck. Then the nest caught fire the next morning when I started the engine. Always pop your hood when camping.
