    Thanks for the review. I just want to make a point that this is not a helical cutterhead even though their product marketing states it is. Helical cutter heads are offset perpendicularly as to create a knife cutting action. This arrangement is simply a carbide cutting tip mounted perpendicularly. This basically bridges the gap between full straight knives and a true helical cutting head like you would see in a Byrd Shelix design.

      Carbide inserts for this machine is an additional cost. Default inserts are high speed steel. (Hss) per the manufacturer.

      I wasn’t aware of that distinction, thanks for the clarification 👍

    Awesome review, what length would you say is the max board you can run through it well? I commonly use 8' boards?

    • @_Shopfix
      @_Shopfix  Před rokem

      Sorry for the late response, but for anyone that has a similar question I’d say that boards under 4’ in length are easy to joint with this jointer. Boards over 5’ in length are much harder to joint because the table of the jointer doesn’t support much of the workpiece. If you wanted to joint boards that are 8’ in length or longer I would recommend building extension tables in the front and end of the jointer.

      @@_Shopfix hey thanks for the reply, I ended up ordering a full size grizzly 6 inch jointer, and even with that I had trouble with 8 foot boards, so I ended up having to get some roller stands to extend the outfield and infield lengths, and it was a huge pain in the neck, I would say that it's great for jointing 6 foot boards or smaller, but I plan to get an 8 inch grizzly. Partly because most rough sawn lumber comes in 5 to 7 inch widths, and a lot of the boards had to be ripped before jointing them, adding yet another step.

    The onkly REAL difference with this machine vs other benchtop units is the helix head cutter...and if an extra $100 is not an issue for you, go for it. Otherwise the Craftsman and/or the Porter Cable are a better option. All other configurations on these 3 machines are almost identical.

  • @Theonebaddude
    @Theonebaddude Před 2 lety

    The cutter head of this machine is actually segmented not helical.

    You recommend a 4" jointer but I don't think this exists. WTF

      They aren’t common anymore, the 6in models have taken over. My point was that if your main goal is to edge joint boards there’s no reason to spend extra money on larger capacity.
