    Interesting comments below---but the main Duel truck that was wrecked had a 13 speed tranny, and a model 1674 Cat motor, (245 horsepower). That Pete was a 1955 model. Bought new in 1955, it had a 275 Cummins and a 5X3, was a Union 76 Transport for around 10 years, and was then bought by a trucker to continue to haul fuel out of Union Oil, the Broadway and Rosecrans terminal in Gardena, California. That old trailer had torsion bar suspension, a bit odd for a gas tanker, and it carried 7,150 gallons legal. Not a bad driving old truck, but no show case either, it could earn you a living though. I hauled a load to Universal TV studios one day, and they saw the truck, and bought it soon after. The rest is history.

    I've been forever trying to come up with a great fan fiction theory to explain what Duel was all about ever since I was a nipper when I first saw it on TV in the 70's Lol, this movie was in a class of it's own and I dare say it would beat anything today, despite the better special effects incorporated into today's movies, the best part is when David Mann is in the drive by diner and he suddenly sees the truck outside and naturally concludes that the mysterious insane driver must be one of the people in the diner, understandable paranoia sets in as he tries to work out who it probably is, then he spots that bloke sitting their eating and drinking on his own and he decides that it must be him and goes up to him to tell him to 'cut it out' etc and the bloke just thinks he's a nutter Lol because as we found out shortly afterwards, it wasn't him, the psycho truck driver wasn't in the diner after all, the ending was good as well although it left a lot of obvious questions, namely who was the driver and what was it supposed to be all about??.
    Okay, well, I admit that this will have holes in it but this is what I make of it, the made truck driver was actually the chap at the party that David Mann and his wife were talking about on the phone, somehow, he found out that David would be on his way to see someone about this business contract so he knew where he would be on the road and then he just decided to make Davids life hell with a view to eventually killing him off but in a way that it would look like an accident, he would then go off with Davids wife who was obviously bored with David anyway because he was too nice, she made that clear, look at the way she belittled him for not wanting to 'get into a fight', perhaps Davids wife and the truck driver might have even planned it together?, that's how he would have found out where David would be on the road, how's that ? Lol.

      DUEL was IMO, the most terrifying film ever made. Beginning in 1990 I began flying Chicago to Orlando on vacation, in 1992 I decided to drive to see what I'd been flying over. Visions of 'dueling banjos' and insane truck drivers filled my mind as I left home for the first drive south.
      I missed an I75 sign in Chattanooga Tennessee and ended up off the highway. The banjos were playing in my head as I searched for an entry ramp back onto the highway. I found the entry but realized I was being followed by a 'cab over' 18 wheeler. I know I didn't cut a truck driver off, I just didn't know where the truck came from. I sped up, the driver of the truck sped up and at 80 MPH, in 9 PM traffic I finally lost him/her.
      I agree with your theory about Mann's wife, as I recall, she was a self-centered bitch.

    • @nicky29031977
      @nicky29031977 Před 10 lety +3

      I read somewhere on the web some years ago that the truck driver was a psychopath who regularly killed people by running them off the road since if you look at the back of the truck you'll see( I haven't noticed but this is what I read) different number plates impyling that after he kills someone he takes their number plates as some king of morbid souvenir collection! At least this was a possibilty, and no more than that, put forward! Steven Spielberg never gave a clear explanation either and the film was based on a short story! The fact that there is no eplanation is what makes the story so scary in the first place and also why people are still talking about it over 40 years later. To think this was a tv film which was later rereleased in cinemas but extra footage had to be filmed to give it cinema lengh time! The extra scenes filmed were David talking with his wife over the phone where she berates him for not standing up for himself and also the scene where he drives out of his garage at the begining!

    • @46619TAB
      @46619TAB Před 10 lety

      nicky29031977 I never noticed the license plate thing but I have seen 2 versions of the film, one with the ultra bitch wife and one without.
      For me the scariest part is that we never saw the truck driver or learned why he was tormenting David and of course the truck looked as if it had been to Hell and came back possessed.

    • @nicky29031977
      @nicky29031977 Před 10 lety +1

      ***** the version with the wife is the cinema version with added scenes...the one without is the tv version! As for why the truck driver is trying to kill David and his face never being shown...no clear explantion is given and shouldn't be either since that would make the film less scary! It should be left up to our own imagination!

    • @46619TAB
      @46619TAB Před 10 lety +2

      nicky29031977 I saw the original cut on TV years ago and saw the version with the wife years later on TV, it may have been a rented VHS or on HBO. The later is far better because it's a better portrayal of David and his personality flaws and explains his exuberance in the end of the film. But OMG that truck!
