I am also French.. my Grandpa worked as French Police back in 60’s and his Dad worked in French court too. All their birth certificates that we still have are transcripted in French.
We can’t have Dual Citizenship because Indian Govt does not give us that rights. We do have OCI instead so we can live in India as long as we want. So it’s mistaken as dual citizenship.

Similarly to British, The French East India Company was a colonial commercial enterprise, founded on 1 September 1664 to compete with the English and Dutch trading companies in the East Indies. India gained freedom from the British in 1947. However, the French colonisers left Pondicherry, a coastal town in Tamil Nadu, only in 1962. And when they did, they offered French citizenship to the locals.

The French treated everybody equally as long as they accepted their Napoleonic Civil Law/Code", learnt the language and accepted French culture and way of life. The French revolution happened inspired by Voltaire's "Fraternity, Equality and Liberty" . Moreover the French system is built on meritocracy, you will never see a guduguduppukaran, pakoda kader, pani puri wala, chaiwala become their political leader, PM or President . They value merit more than anything else. All French political leaders are long serving accomplished civil servants and they are very highly educated and super smart who went to Grand Ecoles. I have never met even one single person who went to a Grand Ecole in France outside france, while I have worked with lots of people from top universities from other parts of the world. The French were conferring French Citizenship irrespective of ethnicity, race since the times of the First Republic, more so and easily since Napoleon III. During the Fourth Republic after WWII, all people of French India were also full French Citizens like any other French Overseas Department. So Tamil people did drogam to people who took good care of them(French) and fell for the false hopes given by Gandhi, Jinnah, Sardar, Nehru all of them were british barristers and the first three were Gujratis. Now they are suffering. I could see the deep pain, helplessness and remorse in the eyes and heart of those people. Their drogam was to vote against the French in the plebiscite, and completely stupid in not opting for French Citizenship. All they had to do was go fill a form and live in Pondicherry as usual like they are living now. I really feel sorry for them. One of my classmate joined the French Legion(Division of French Army). where anybody can join. The french give preference to Tamils in the recruitment to the Legion, that is one option left for the young men, based on value and love of the french for the Tamils. I have heard even 20 years ago that lots of Tamils were in the legion, I met a US Marine long ago who worked alongside the legion, commended Tamil Legionairres for their extraordinary courage, bravery and valor. The Tamils, Telugus, Malayalees and Thuluva were no less in their stupidity and fell for the evil schemes of congress men and did drogam to their own leaders of Justice Party. The Justice Party leaders were educated people who were businessmen,economists. hereditary(for thousands of years) administrators. The were dead against complete independence, they were not even for dominion status. Their stand was they South Indians have work to eradicate the ills and malice in their society before going for self governance, they envisaged an enlightened society before seeking independence. It is very well accepted that we need atleast an educated society if not an enlightened one for effective functioning of democracy They also wanted to square up 400 years of accounts with the brits before separation. Rajagopalachari died a very sad man for having supported Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar and Jinnah. He supported DMK (succesor party to Justice Party) in the elections and we now have them. I am saying all these because, my maternal great grand father was the headmaster. teacher to Rajaji, on my paternal side, my great grand fathers grand father was one of the founders of Justice Party. We only hope that things can be better in future.

India constitution doesn't allow dual citizenship, we need to give up our India passport to became a citizen of a foreign country. Then we'll get a OCI card (overseas citizenship of India) which is nothing but a PR(permanent residency) this is like a green card in US, இது வச்சு எப்ப வேணும்னாலும் இந்தியாவுக்கு வரலாம் எவ்வளவு காலம் வேனுமானாலும் தங்கலாம், but citizen கிடையாது.
இதைத் தான் பலரும் தவறா புரிஞ்சு 'Dual Citizenship'னு சொல்றாங்க.
பிரான்ஸ் Citizenship வாங்கி இப்ப French Passport வச்சுருக்க யார்கிட்டேயும் Indian passport இருக்காது, இந்த OCI card தான் இருக்கும்.

My home town is Pondicherry... Adding to all the information on positive side let me add up two which i know and which i have seen.
Which i know:
Brathiyar wrote குயில் பாட்டு when he was i pondicherry from a Mango farm which was also know as குயில் தோப்பு.. nice song have a read when you find time.
Which i have seen:
The sweage which is show it does not end in that area... its a long connection for KMs some underground and some open. on postive side the plan is to make pondicherry not taken by sea as the place is low lying area of sea.
If you can go to indira Gandhi stadium and sit on the top seat of the view point and see the SEA will be of that height. So there is always danger of sea entering town. This happened when tunami stuck tamilnadu and pondicherry the sea water started to come fast through the sweage in reverse way from sea to sweage and those sweage are interconnected which leads near ousteri lake and that inturn connects to sankaraparani river(Gingee river) and that inturn connects to again sea.. so water will move out at any cost back to sea at no extra cost even if it enters lands... and also there was a passage which govt later closed the underground passage will start near that white town area and lead to Gingee fortress which is belived to be dugout by desingu raja(Gingee King) when he rulled in Gingee.

I was brought up in thiruvannamalai and bring there just 100km away, i have visited Pondicherry many times during childhood till now. Never knew that information and seen through eyes like you have. Have drived, walked, rode over that canal but never knew it's history. This video is informative as usual like other videos in this channel 👏👏 I don't know if you are preparing information before making the video or it is spontaneous. But Vera level informative video making. 👌 There are few comments of people with both the citizenship. If possible talk to them and let us all know their side of lifestyle. there is an island called reunion in indian ocean which is closes to madagascar is also a part of French territory ..reunion is a multi cultural and multi ethnic island of that nearly a quarter population were called as malbars who were taken to that island from the pondicherry and karaikal regions..but sadly majority of then dont know tamil as they speak french creole and most of them are mixed group with other ethnicity like whites, blacks and chinese and all the inhabitants were granted french citizenship...

They did not have to grant french citizenship. These territories are part of the French metropolitain so they are already french citizens. They would have done the same to pondicherry, the people then were stupid and fell for false nationalizm of Gandhi and other north Indians, Tamils from the british side. They are as foreign as french.

Actually this is not true.The Puducherry french nationlites are having only one citizen ship .Most of the french natiolaties are having overcitizen ship only.This oci cannot be taken into account of Indian Nationality. Moreover Puducherry french natiolaties are not having voting power in an India Élections, Pl take note of this.

Cost of living is more in Pondicherry because of this wealthy French nationals. For example, they simply throw away Rs. 1000 and take one vanchiram fish( in 1998) and tell the lady to keep the balance. This happened to me, when asked it for 650(normal price) The fisher woman scolded me that I could not buy and to move on.
