Hello there!
I finally got the Erica Synth Perkons, which was one of my favorite instruments at SuperBooth 2022. The immediacy and playability of this drum machine is outstanding. Everything is at your fingertip and easy to manipulate, but how this beast sound? Erica Is well known for a certain kind of industrial/experimental tone, but I think the Perkons can be suitable for more subtle , "round" sounds too.
These are my first impressions, more video will come soon!

Those sounds and patterns at the beginning were awesome. Thanks for showing off a totally different side of this thing.
Thanks for the walkthrough! Looks like a lot of fun. I need to try one out!
Have fun!
Really dope sounds thanks for showing the capabilities of this machine in the right hands!
Glad you like it!
I recently bought a Perkons and this video is incredibly helpful. The performance strategies section is outstanding. I felt as though I was sitting next to you and observing you putting it through its' paces. Glad you also did some Syntrx videos. The Syntrx II is on my radar. Happy to have discovered your channel.
Glad it helped!
Great demo! Very cool instrument!
Thanks a lot!
Man I'm so happy to see you have one of these, I'm excited to see what you do with it. Perkons HD-01 meets Avalon 😉
I love how the Perkons sound's with the Syntrx when they're combined.
Id love the syntrx too, sadly my budget is gone with the persons ahah
@@OoraMusic 🤣 No GAS then 🤣
@@OoraMusic You could sell me your 2nd Avalon and buy one 😉😁
great video man. just put a pre order for the black perkons . this has me excited please keep these coming
the black one looks amazing
Thanks for the video. The Perkson is on my watch list. This video gives a good inside view.
Glad it was helpful!
Thx it was fun to watch
Thanks!
"Create sounds that I like" is a good approach for this kind of video content because your viewers want to see you explore the device and how it works
thanks!!
Waiting for mine to arrive any day now.
:)
this with the new Syntrx II would be amazing combo!
You're building quite a collection! and yet your desk always looks so tidy. Where/how do you store the gear you are not using? would be interesting to see a video with a full tour of all your gear!
oh man, they are all around. I keep one table only for videos, that's why it seems clean. My wife want me out of the house lol
@@OoraMusic hahaha! same here
Love the video! Not sure if missed it but can you make drum patterns in odd time signatures?
You can do that setting the length and division of each track independently!
Hey! I just wanted to say I love your content, keep it up! been looking at the perkons for a while, so thanks for the video! One question, could you share what camera you use to record your videos? Really nice image! Thank you
Thanks!!! I use an iPhone 13 Pro Max for all the videos :D
Great overview and while it looks fun, I think that I made the right choice going with Elektron Rytm MK2 for my drum synth. The screen is easier to deal with and still have finger pads and nice sounds. I prefer Erica Synths Eurorack modules to their stand alone synths.
Great vid. Definitely what has attracted me is its playability. They are taking forever to get to the States...unless I'm just not on the VIP list lol.
I bought is from perfect circuit actually!
@@OoraMusic Dang...how long it took to get it? I ordered mine (unnamed vendor) in July and still nadda.
There is a Tap Tempo function
The unlit triggers are great. You can lock parameters without triggering th envelope.
Hi Federico, have you already paired it along side with your beloved vermona/octatrack combo? It sounds like a really fun live setup.
Coming soon !
love your output and focus. tell me, is the compressor noisey on your unit?
over certain setting yes, it got pretty noisy, so I keep it under control
the one thing that really annoys me is the single modulation source, i feel like even just letting you have some params be modulated negatively so they would at least be in opposing parts of the lfo amplitude would allow it to be a lot more interesting
OoraMusic is the master of attenuation. 😎
ahahah
Extremely interesting device. Finally something interesting in drum machine area (especially after disappointing drumlogue from korg). Thanks for this in-depth review ❤
Glad you like it!
Yep. The Drumlogue was quite a letdown. I really don't get what they were going for there. My favorite drum machines at the moment are (aside from the Perkons), the LXR-02 and the Syntakt. The LXR-02 probably comes closest to the sound of the Perkons if you're looking for something like that but don't quite want to spend the hefty amount of money.
@@Berus7777 I like LXR-02 too. It sounds hard and gridy
I'd love to get one of these. I just don't know if I'd get used to the aqua color. A neutral black or grey one would be cool.
ahaha I hear you. definitely a strong color choice :)
How would you compare this (Perkons) against the Vermona DRM1 MKIV [which you also tested]? Thank you!
Ditto this request!
The Vermona DRM is incredible. However - it’s not really comparable here because it requires external sequencing/playing and has no ability to modulate its parameters. The Perkons is a full performance instrument. I absolutely adore all things Vermona, but I parted with the DRM simply because I don’t really like many external sequencers and because I have a multi instrument rig where modulating is an important part of the expressiveness. The DRM is perfect if you just are focused on it, but perhaps a little too attention demanding if you’re playing with a mix of things or eurorack gear too
@@chadthecurator1974 Thank you very much for the detailed explanation, much appreciated!
One feature you missed is the ability to record modulations of any knob. Press REC to turn the light on then twist a knob.
yes!
There is a tap tempo if you use shift+ reset and voice 2 button.
🕺
:)
Instant Rødhåd machine...
I wish!
Why smurf blue? I want it black, all black please.
It's nice but the sounds are so mundane. I've had drum machines since Roger Linn's first, my faves have been the DMX, RX5 and the Drumatix. RX5 sounds are ok but the 8 assignable individual outs are a huge plus in the studio. the Drumatix was magical in 1981. Loved the Drumulator when it came out, grew to hate those sounds... still have my DMX....not the greatest sounds solo but flippin' great in a song mix. check out Herbie Hancock's "Rockit", New Order's "Blue Monday", Phil Collins' "Sussudio", or Stevie Nick's "Stand Back". You can tell it's a machine but the DMX sounds like drums. Run DMC's "My Addidas is an 808 but still sounds like drums. Check out Scritti Polliti's "Boom There She Was" with ending reprise adding the great Roger Troutman...and probably the greatest pop keyboardist David Gamson ...the Synclaviers, Matrix 12, Prophet VS, MKS-80, and the DMX + Linn... on the behemoth that was the QXC-1.this may be when programming reached its pinnicle...the cuilmination of the best gear in the most fertile period......period of the greatest produces of electronic music, Trevor Horn, Steve Lillywhite, Nile Rodgers,.and David Gamson programming at its most refined and musical.
It just strikes me funny that many drum machines really don't have much to do with drums at all. More like click, clack, clong, bong, tick, chik, bing, bong, beep, and boop machines. Not saying I don't like them...just time to call them something a little more fitting..
PARAMETER LOCKS
Great device. Unfortunately also very expensive.
that is an issue that lot of cool instruments have :D
@@OoraMusic Indeed. I think for that price I would go for a SOMA Pulsar-23. But I am not sure. One should have the possibility to try both for a week :-)
Buy a LXR-02 now or wait 6 month and buy a Perkons? 😁
Id go Perkons :)
Try a year or two
@@christopherpederson1021 Maybe I can sell my souls to the highest bidder.. probably need 6 month at least anyway 😁
(Why I never got tats)
good to know!
So you could be a troll
Instead? 🙄
He's probably glad his name isn't "Jed". Isn't it cool how the universe balances things out?
You have no idea... within 5 years, companies will have temporary tats for the backs of gadget and synth ifluencers' hands. Or what about head ads for all the bald talking heads? You could do an ad read within a video that's basically an ad for a synth (for example, you could sell wallets or a VPN within a ten minute and 13 second video that's already fluffing/hyping a synth). And then, right after the ad read, you cut to the midroll ad🤣. I saw that ONE time, the serial ad trifecta. But only once😮.
With that stuff in mind... tatoos seem quaint and old fashioned in comparison. Hardly worth get offended or shocked by, IMO.
BTW, I don't consider these deep dives to be ads, per se... they do function that way, but they're useful to people who are looking for a drum machine. You learn some positive aspecta, and also the compromises and bugs.
For its price range it didnt offer anything wow. Ads7 mk2 half the price all the right beef
respectfully disagree :)
@@OoraMusic nothing at all mate. This should be no more than 1k. Is a dfam with an analog four hybrid
Good machine but wow it’s full of stupid bugs that still havnt been fixed
It crashes way too often and in opinion WAY overpriced for what it is
It sounds really not like 2k...
Uh... "Most PLAYABLE"??? ROFLMAO... No. Not by a long, loooonnnnnnnnng shot. If you want "most playable", look at something like the DrumBrute Impact. That thing is crazy easy. Now, I LOVE the sound of the Perkons, in fact, it might be my favorite sounding drum machine ever (that or the Quasar), and there are a lot of things it does well - a LOT... but it is NOT, by any description or stretch of the imagination the "Most Playable" of drum machines. Pretty much anything aside from the Quasar is easier, in fact.
maybe we think of playability in a different way. I like the immediacy of the persons and so far make it the easier to mangle in a live performance. OFC I di not try all drum machines :)
@@OoraMusic Ohhh, OK, if you mean "playable" as in "performable", yes, I would strongly agree. If you're familiar with the Zen Delay (Erica/Ninja Tune), I would describe that pedal as probably the most performable pedal on the market, although it is far from the easiest to use. I think we just had a semantic misunderstanding, because I was taking your use of the term "playable" to mean "easy to play", rather than "able to be used as a performance tool" - which, I agree, it really is. I would rate it at or near the top, along with the TR8S, although I like the sound of the Perkons more, because it's more modern and has a more industrial/techno sound.
no one is going to afford this drum machine
there is always a way :)
No one gonna ever get one either🤣
