  • In this episode I take you through, step by step, how to get your preference points, research units using GoHunt and the WY game and fish website (with screen sharing so you can actually see the process), and draw your Wyoming antelope tag. This year I took a family group to Wyoming and filled tags on public land with just 1 point and you can too!

Just subscribed, looking to do a hunt with my father in law this year. sadly we didnt purchase any preference points last year. We got swindled by an outfitter in montana this past year for an elk hunt (google beau birch). We decided to start trying to get into better odds and less expensive western hunts while we build points in these states. your video is extremely helpful! I have looked and watched a ton of videos and this was the most informative I have seen. Fingers crossed we can get a tag this year!

    Good video.
Funny thing is I was just the opposite.
I started hunting Mule Deer first and one year I applied for a Pronghorn Doe tag to go along with my Muledeer Buck tag. Little did I know that pronghorn hunting is now one of my favorite hunts.
I applied for a Montana tag this year. Fingers crossed!

This will be my 1st time hunting out west and hope to come across some good people to help with some pointers and get some scouting in for my other hunts in the coming yrs...

That was a great breakdown of how one could find their best opportunity to draw a pronghorn tag 🏷 in Wyoming. As I mentioned on your post about this episode on Instagram I dream of hunting pronghorn in every state that I can DIY public land style no matter what weapon type I have to use to get a tag 🏷.
I am a GoHunt INSIDER and have been for three years. I also just bought points for elk, mule deer 🦌 and pronghorn a couple days ago. Oh Montana’s point period ends a month earlier than Wyoming on September 30th. I also bought points there too.
I haven’t yet been able to apply for a hunt but I am hoping to be able to in 2022. I have played with the Filtering 2.0 on NR regular and set the public land to at least 20%, which knocks it down to maybe 8 units.
My biggest issue in making my decisions is figuring out access since many units are checkerboards much worse than the unit 113 that you used as an example. I have never asked for permission to hunt someone’s property before even locally in West Virginia.
I may have to check out the NR special and would like to take my 64 year old Dad out on a pronghorn hunting trip. But part of me wants to do an open country mule and pronghorn combo hunt for 10 days so the Special draw makes the budget super tight.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience. I actually listened to the podcast in my car 🚗 then watched the whole video. Hopefully you all had a great pronghorn hunt this year.

I am hoping to do just that but lack of vacation, money and the fact that the family members that I would want to go with have their own ideas for a western big game hunting adventure. Mostly OTC options since they don’t want to play the draw tag 🏷 game.

@@thehuntersquestwhuntermcwa3475 oh I agree with you. There are multiple options available out there that can be had OTC or drawn with zero points. No matter the species. Plus certain weapon types make it an easier draw.
I know that multiple states like Colorado, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Oklahoma (possibly others like Kansas and Texas) have archery 🏹 seasons for Non Residents that are OTC hunts for pronghorn.
Yes I had to do unpaid leave for my waterfowl 🦆 hunting and fishing 🎣 to Alaska that was 9 days.

I am a little confused. If I want to hunt this year(2022), I am too late to buy points, which means I would go in with zero points. Does that mean that I can’t buy a point this year though to use for next years hunt if I do get drawn for a tag this year with zero points? Hope that makes sense. I am from Ohio where you just go buy a tag for white tails and go hunt them, no points, no drawings, so this is very new to me. Great video as I have been trying to understand how to get the data to complete my analytics and this definitely helped not only with location but your thought process as well. Thank you.

      @thehuntersquestwhuntermcwa3475  Před 2 lety

Hey Craig, so yes, I think the period to buy 2022 points is closed… though you should look to confirm. You can still apply and do the special draw and you might still be able to get a tag in a easier draw unit with zero points. Check gohunt.

Hi Hunter, I know I'm a year late to this party, but I'm in the process of planning my first Wyoming antelope hunt, and just found your videos. Something I think I understand, but that you didn't touch on is preference points vs random draw for your first choice unit. My understanding is that for your first choice unit, the system will first attempt to draw you based on preference points (which get 75% of the tags), and if you're drawn then, your points are "burned". But if you don't get drawn based on points, then it moves you into the random draw (25% of the tags) for your first choice unit. If you're drawn then, your points are not burned. That's my understanding, but it's the point that I'm not 100% sure about. And then if you still don't get drawn, it'll move you to your 2nd and then 3rd choices, which are random-only and don't burn your points (I know that for sure).

Hey Shane, thanks for your comment. First of all, for a first time, I would focus on one species. Don’t try to do two at once. It’ll be a waste of points in my opinion. Start with antelope. With 2-3 points you can get on a good hunt. I have had good hunts on 0. Apply for special draw if you can swing it financially. Look up draw odds and unit info on the game and fish site and gohunt. Pick the best unit you can with your points… look at public land percentage because there are goats everywhere in the eastern part of the state. Animals aren’t the issue access is. Get there a day or two early and rove the unit to see where you can get. Good luck and happy hunting!
