I’ve done this also. PVC frame plus a tarp on a Ranger pickup. You’ll have to cover the tail end above the tailgate, for sure. A longer tarp in that direction works good because you can stake it out in the daytime like an awning with a couple poles. It’ll give you a sheltered work space on the tailgate for cooking. The tarp clamps can’t hurt, but I bungeed the grommets TIGHT to the bottom edge of the bedsides, and it survived a high wind rainstorm. Also, to bug proof the thing, I bought a few yards of tulle at a fabric store. Just enough to zip tie in place above the tailgate. I have no idea what it’s usually used for, but it’s good enough skeeter netting. Good job. Have fun.
I think a ridge pole would be a good addition, not only would it stop the apex of the tent collapsing but it makes a good place to hang lanterns etc! Looks nice and sturdy! Hope you have many, many fun trips together!
When you add the center ridge pole cover the pole with a pool noodle. The noodle will prevent rips as the tarp is over the top with tension and stand up to wind and rain better.
I made one just like that for the top of my houseboat. I used it in summer so i put bamboo curtains on it and i could roll them up to the peak and have a view of the sky. If it rained i would put a tarp over it. Everybody loved it, it looked tropical.
I followed this pattern but had to added a bar to the bottom of the truck bed to secure the legs because i have an insert for my truck bed which covered the holes on the back of the bed. Then i added a center pole to the very top of the A frame and four windows. I am using bungee cords to hold the tarp down. Thanks for the idea.
Sweet! This is exactly what I've been looking to do. I'm a 54 yo female n I wanna go camping alone. About 20 yrs ago this idea to camp alone woulda been no biggie but now that I'm older I consider all the things that could potentially go wrong and what that could mean if alone. I also watch a grip of Dogman stories on YT n I have officially scared myself out of single camping. I'm gonna get my conceal carry permit so I can bring a piece just in case but until I get it this idea of yours might fit the bill for me as far as my comfort being alone goes. I have a 92 toyota 4x4 and being up off the ground will make me feel much safer. I had checked out the prices for overland/truck bed tent systems n they're outrageously priced. I noticed the prices to average in the 5 to 600 range. That's just ridiculous. Thanks to your engineering I think I'm gonna be able to solo camp this summer.
Thats awesome your getting out doing your thing. A few tips from experience. 1) You've got great idea there. Its been done in various styles with varied types of frame work for decades. Right down to the tarp covered wagons of the pioneer's. 2) figure a way to run a ridge pole.3) Using some sort of cordage. Run an X rack from corner to corner. Helps exponentially in heavy winds. I dig your style, great hiking rig!
I made this identical truck tent. Bought my pc pipe section at Lowe's and purchased a tarp at Harbor Freight. Very inexpensive. Used bunji cords to tighten the tarp to outside of bed. Also designed it with a ridge pole to keep from sagging. Rained the first day and through out the night and absolutely no leaks. The rain hitting the tarp was somewhat disconcerting as it was rather loud. I had power at the camp site and ran an extension cord for my small ceramic heater. With an air mattress and cooler inside I had a comfortable time in the tent/bedcamper. Unfortunately I traded my 8' bed regular size pickup for a crew cab with a 5 1/2' bed.
I know it's only been a week, but have you gotten to try it out yet? Only thing I could think of is you should be able to get "3-way pvc connectors" that you could use to run another 5' pipe along the very peak of the tent, to really keep the top from caving in at all under any weather conditions. The nice thing about using PCV is it's basically a big lego or erector set, you can change it and modify it however you want. I'm thinking you could put T's in your two upper 5' pipes now and use it to run a couple of pieces horizontally from bar to bar. If you did this at the front of the truck bed where you're not going to hit your head on it climbing in, and put two parallel bars spaced about a foot apart, you could put a shelf up there that would be above your pillows to hold your duffel bag or phones or whatever at night so it's not down on the floor where you'll step on it. You could also expand it outwards past the tailgate to make a "front porch" area so that you are covered climbing in and out of the truck bed in inclement weather. Also would let you leave the tailgate down to have move "living space" while you're in there. Looks good so far though, keep up the good work!

I was going to suggest the same thing with the top ridge. Anytime you do not have something there, it WILL sink down with rain, snow, branches, birds, etc. : )
I have built hotbed covers for early planting in a similar manner. One other upgrade later is to assemble it then drill holes through the fittings and pipe the use Carter pins or wire to firmly attach the pipe to the fittings. They want pull apart in high wind.
I was originally planning to make my own truck tent until I started looking at some of the ones on the market. The only thing that I really like better about the ones that you can buy is having windows and skylights especially. But this is a great way to get her done on your own brother!

You could even layer the PVC piping with insulating material and clamp or zip tie it down, and then recover with tarps, canvas, or waterproof canvas material, etc. The truck bed can be covered with some type of foam or rubber matting, perhaps underneath that an insulating material of some sort, and actually have a very snug, warm in the Winter, camper. A tiny wood stove could be added if a top build was created to hold and insulate from melt, a stove pipe; the wood stove could be mounted and surrounded with a protective framing device that will keep it in place. So many possibilities here, including ventilation and solar powered fans :) I Love It !!
They might just slide together, but quite often they are not that easy to slide apart afterwards... Often you need a pipe wrench to twist the pipe in order to get it to loosen up enough that you can slide it apart even if you didn't glue it together... If I was designing something like this, I would sand the ends of the pieces of PVC pipe a bit to reduce their diameter slightly so that they could be more easily detached later...
I agree with a top ridge pole too and I am not sold on the tarp clips. It seems the wind will remove that tarp easily with those clips? Maybe some bungees along the lower edges pulling down on the tarp? Maybe even some plastic ties that you can cut off when removing? Great idea. Beats my sleeping under a tonneau cover lol I am just not sold on anything a hungry bear can reach through.

You might show the frame broken down and in the bag. And, while it should go without saying, I think you should tell viewers to not use glue on the connector pices because that will make take down and storage, more than a bit difficult. Be sure to remind viewers that they will want some air circulation throughout the day and night so they don't suffocate. The Army had this happen a few times while moving troops in duce 'n halfs years ago. You and your girl should be proud of yourselves, nice video.
Ya, I went to lowe's and bought vinyl bug screen to re-screen my homes windows and patio door. That stuff is great and sturdy! Any your cat or dog can't put a hole in it, tear it, enlarge any openings etc...(Plus you can see out fine, but you can't see in fine!)
Looks pretty good. I would change out the fittings at the very top to incorporate another pole from front to back to increase support and use tie outs to the ground to stabilize the tarp.
I made a square frame back in the winter for my truck. I never thought about the squeeze clamps as a way to secee the trap to the frame, that's brilliant!
Good job, simple and effective. I made something very similar for my ‘83 GMC K2500 long bed. I utilized my headache rack for the front but made PVC supports for the middle and rear stake bed holes. Covered bed with an inflatable mattress is easier and more comfortable than any tent I’ve had.
I have a 5' x 8' utility trailer (with no walls, just the welded rails about a foot up the sides and the tall mesh ramp at the back. I plan to do something very similar with it, but have mosquito netting at the front and rear for airflow, and an electric power bank or small fueled generator for a fan for circulation in the hot Texas weather. Excellent! Exactly what I'm looking for. I've wasted an entire year looking everywhere from auctions, classified adds, all the online places looking for an affordable tow behind my truck rv or something enclosed yet large enough I can put a couple of cots in there. I don't want to sleep on the ground in my sleeping bag or some blowup bed matress, cause no matter how puncture proof (yet they always come with a patch kit hmmm) I'd still manage to find a way to puncture it. But as one man said, you got a truck, you got a camper. I can't afford a camper shell to fit my truck. Dodge Ram 1500. I had one back when I had a little Isuzu truck, but that was years ago and both are long gone lol. I"m on a poor mans budget. I ride a motorcycle when the weather is good enough, but I want to sell it. I just want to cover the back of my truck, throw a couple of comfy cots and an ice chest or something in there. I never found what I was looking for. Then I just watched a previous vid a guy used pvc. I thought that's the answer. PVC. It's durable, shapeable, you can buy those things you have to give it an "elbow", I mean it's just perfect. The only thing I worried about was the extra space when you insert the pipe into the truck. I thought exactly what you did. OR used. I used those on my canoe. I had no trailer, a small truck at the time. My husband and I could both get the canoe up and in the bed of the truck, but we had to put the front half up on the cab. I went to walmart and bought a couple of those floaty foam things. Cut them to size, then cut from the hole, end to end and it slipped tightly over the crossbars on the canoe, so it didn't rub against the paint. It was perfect. Just like your build is perfect. Thanks for posting and showing off your build. There's TONS of people like ourselves out there, looking for the same thing. If only they find your vid. I can share, but I'm a bit of a loner. Every one I know has passes away before their time. So I wanna take the time I have left with my older husband, and get away without going to get a vacay loan or travel loan. We've been married over 30 yrs. but we never had kids, so I really have no one) The problem is, the rear of my truck, did I say what it is....well it's a Dodge Ram 1500 3.1liter. I'm 5 foot 5 inchs and the tailgate up, comes to my chin. That's how high it is lifted. Getting in and out is going to be a problem for him, so I said nope, we can either buy steps or build some. OR we've got a step ladder we can throw in..getting in is easy to figure out, it's what to use and how to build it that's the problem. WELL ITS SOLVED! Thanks for posting this. As I told the other person, there's tons of us out here looking for this exact type of thing. Hopefully many others will find your vid. I'd share it, but I've got no one left to share it with. How well does it hold up in wind? There is enough surface area to make a strong sail and pull the whole assembly off the truck. I would add a way to anchor it to the truck and a flap to cover the back by the tailgate to keep wind blown rain from entering. Adding light is a great idea. Consider a disco ball.
Dude you totally reminded me that PVC pipe exists and are like lincoln logs for adults. I was about to buy a purpose built truck bed tent, but that is not necessary now. I'm not much of an A frame guy, so I'll have to design my own version of this, also the previous owner of my truck covered those holes with some stupid caps that I can't remove without damaging it. I'll have to redesign this, but thanks for the inspiration!
You might have more PVC than I do in mine, but I can fit it all into a Lawn Chair bag. I might have to "modify" mine now. It could use some additional support. Good video...
Great idea! I am planning on doing something like this with my Jeep Gladiator on my next camping trip so I dont have to worry about setting a temp up on the ground.
Love your innovation.. Take a length of 3 o 4 inch PVC and notch the ends to correspond with the peak. The length should extend so the notch on each end will engage and stay put. Lash together if needed. Now you have a peak that won't collect a rain puddle...Great, cheap idea! Well done
If you pitch your tent in a good location and dig a small drainage trench around it's base as well as a trench on the downhill side draining the water away, you will be dry if your tent and fly are in good condition.
I had a similar idea for my 2011 ford ranger, cool to see someone make something very similar as a visual, only thing is id want mine completely closed in with a screen, I'd probably be able to rig something up as a custom tarp/covering.
i have a 2500hd with an 8 foot bed. I have ladder racks AND some long ladders. I can use the ladders for an awning extended off of the ladder racks. Then tarp it over. I just ordered a diesel heater also....
Gonna make a similar one for a 2022 ford ranger. Gonna make mine with pvc poles past the tailgate, also gonna try to make it breathable for hot summer days
It needs a peak support to extend out beyond the tailgate like a patio cover... a couple expandable poles out at the corners and support lines to anchor and it should be great 👍

I've seen a few different setups, I usually take a little from each and make my own design. I liked the use of the pool noodles, I may incorporate that into my plan!

Great job but we used to just bow a piece of PVC from stake hole to stake hole and make a covered wagon type out of it. Only need 3 pieces of PVC and that's it.
My setup is a little different. I have three holes on each side of my bed, so I utilize three very long tent rods half mooning across the bed and one on top going front to back. A total of four tent rods that fold up into a little bag. I put a tailored, heavyweight tarp over the bed and viola!
I don't have the holes on the bed sides but I bet I can just make the pipes longer and go to the bottom of the bed and make it work thanks for the great idea
My thought is to put a bar across the very top of the A frame so as to not hold the rain water where the tarp will flatten, but make it run right off it completely. Enjoy! 🙂
This is brilliant!! I've been toying with the idea of trying to build a version of a collapsible camper that I saw on a video, but he just has a flat roof. It's made to be put up after you get to camp and then dismantled for the drive home. I HATE changing clothes all bent over so I wanted to make a domed or peaked roof to add on top of it, but have been having no luck figuring out how to create and mount it to the camper and yours looks like it could totally be adapted for this! EXCELLENT idea with the noodle! That would never, ever have occurred to me!

You shoukd replace those 90s at the top with a couple of 3 way couplers and put in a ridge pole. In the rain the center will collapse
A brace in the middle would strengthen it as well.

Would be great on an 8' bed but the new Ford Maverick has a 4 1/2' bed. Can anyone say motel? (In the woods?)
You can get tees with a side outlet for the top/ridge pole. They are used for sprinkler risers at corners. Good project.

Slick! You might consider bungee cords or luggage straps to really tighten up the tarp.

Easy to add bug screen across and down the back with the same clamps that hold the tarp.

I saw one that did that to trailer. And he took tarp it to a marine upholster and he sewed on a door and window. Really nice.
I made a square frame back in the winter for my truck. I never thought about the squeeze clamps as a way to secee the trap to the frame, that's brilliant!

I made something very similar for my ‘83 GMC K2500 long bed. I utilized my headache rack for the front but made PVC supports for the middle and rear stake bed holes.
Covered bed with an inflatable mattress is easier and more comfortable than any tent I’ve had.
I have a 5' x 8' utility trailer (with no walls, just the welded rails about a foot up the sides and the tall mesh ramp at the back. I plan to do something very similar with it, but have mosquito netting at the front and rear for airflow, and an electric power bank or small fueled generator for a fan for circulation in the hot Texas weather. Excellent! Exactly what I'm looking for. I've wasted an entire year looking everywhere from auctions, classified adds, all the online places looking for an affordable tow behind my truck rv or something enclosed yet large enough I can put a couple of cots in there. I don't want to sleep on the ground in my sleeping bag or some blowup bed matress, cause no matter how puncture proof (yet they always come with a patch kit hmmm) I'd still manage to find a way to puncture it. But as one man said, you got a truck, you got a camper. I can't afford a camper shell to fit my truck. Dodge Ram 1500. I had one back when I had a little Isuzu truck, but that was years ago and both are long gone lol. I"m on a poor mans budget. I ride a motorcycle when the weather is good enough, but I want to sell it. I just want to cover the back of my truck, throw a couple of comfy cots and an ice chest or something in there. I never found what I was looking for. Then I just watched a previous vid a guy used pvc. I thought that's the answer. PVC. It's durable, shapeable, you can buy those things you have to give it an "elbow", I mean it's just perfect. The only thing I worried about was the extra space when you insert the pipe into the truck. I thought exactly what you did. OR used. I used those on my canoe. I had no trailer, a small truck at the time. My husband and I could both get the canoe up and in the bed of the truck, but we had to put the front half up on the cab. I went to walmart and bought a couple of those floaty foam things. Cut them to size, then cut from the hole, end to end and it slipped tightly over the crossbars on the canoe, so it didn't rub against the paint. It was perfect. Just like your build is perfect. Thanks for posting and showing off your build. There's TONS of people like ourselves out there, looking for the same thing. If only they find your vid. I can share, but I'm a bit of a loner. Every one I know has passes away before their time. So I wanna take the time I have left with my older husband, and get away without going to get a vacay loan or travel loan. I don't wanna be in debt, not at his age. I'm 51, but he's 70 (I know I know...age diff. thing freaks ppl out. We've been married over 30 yrs. but we never had kids, so I really have no one)
The problem is, the rear of my truck, did I say what it is....well it's a Dodge Ram 1500 3.1liter. I'm 5 foot 5 inchs and the tailgate up, comes to my chin. That's how high it is lifted. Getting in and out is going to be a problem for him, so I said nope, we can either buy steps or build some. OR we've got a step ladder we can throw in..getting in is easy to figure out, it's what to use and how to build it that's the problem. WELL ITS SOLVED!

How well does it hold up in wind? There is enough surface area to make a strong sail and pull the whole assembly off the truck. I would add a way to anchor it to the truck and a flap to cover the back by the tailgate to keep wind blown rain from entering. Adding light is a great idea. Consider a disco ball.
Dude you totally reminded me that PVC pipe exists and are like lincoln logs for adults. I was about to buy a purpose built truck bed tent, but that is not necessary now. I'm not much of an A frame guy, so I'll have to design my own version of this, also the previous owner of my truck covered those holes with some stupid caps that I can't remove without damaging it. I'll have to redesign this, but thanks for the inspiration!
You might have more PVC than I do in mine, but I can fit it all into a Lawn Chair bag. I might have to "modify" mine now. It could use some additional support. Good video...

Take a length of 3 o 4 inch PVC and notch the ends to correspond with the peak. The length should extend so the notch on each end will engage and stay put. Lash together if needed. Now you have a peak that won't collect a rain puddle...Great, cheap idea! Well done
If you pitch your tent in a good location and dig a small drainage trench around it's base as well as a trench on the downhill side draining the water away, you will be dry if your tent and fly are in good condition.
I just set up my 4' x 7' freestanding tent in the bed of the truck and then I have bug netting.
This is better then tent on ground w animals, dirt & rain.
And ^%#@$&* bugs LOL
I had a similar idea for my 2011 ford ranger, cool to see someone make something very similar as a visual, only thing is id want mine completely closed in with a screen, I'd probably be able to rig something up as a custom tarp/covering.

i have a 2500hd with an 8 foot bed. I have ladder racks AND some long ladders. I can use the ladders for an awning extended off of the ladder racks. Then tarp it over. I just ordered a diesel heater also....
Gonna make a similar one for a 2022 ford ranger. Gonna make mine with pvc poles past the tailgate, also gonna try to make it breathable for hot summer days
It needs a peak support to extend out beyond the tailgate like a patio cover... a couple expandable poles out at the corners and support lines to anchor and it should be great 👍
I have a truck tent made by Napier Outdoors. It fits like a glove in my F-150. For right around $300, I consider it money well spent.

Great job but we used to just bow a piece of PVC from stake hole to stake hole and make a covered wagon type out of it. Only need 3 pieces of PVC and that's it.

I only used 1 inch, made it like a covered wagon, I did use a top pole from cab to tailgate, lol minutes to set up, I love it
Except you have to carry around 10' pvc pipes.

My setup is a little different. I have three holes on each side of my bed, so I utilize three very long tent rods half mooning across the bed and one on top going front to back. A total of four tent rods that fold up into a little bag. I put a tailored, heavyweight tarp over the bed and viola!
My dad did something like this in the fifties. Only he welded everything together and it was great for the beach.

That's awesome, I will try this but will need to figure out a door and hook a strap to the tailgate, so I can pull it closed easier from the inside.
I don't have the holes on the bed sides but I bet I can just make the pipes longer and go to the bottom of the bed and make it work thanks for the great idea

Looks really good, maybe consider strapping it down so high winds don't yank it off the bed of your truck, but all in all it's a good idea
My thought is to put a bar across the very top of the A frame so as to not hold the rain water where the tarp will flatten, but make it run right off it completely. Enjoy! 🙂

This is brilliant!! I've been toying with the idea of trying to build a version of a collapsible camper that I saw on a video, but he just has a flat roof. It's made to be put up after you get to camp and then dismantled for the drive home.
I HATE changing clothes all bent over so I wanted to make a domed or peaked roof to add on top of it, but have been having no luck figuring out how to create and mount it to the camper and yours looks like it could totally be adapted for this!
