- Mahavishnu Orchestra featuring John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman and Rick Laird.
Track listing:
0:00 Meeting of the Spirits/You know you know
11:36 Lotus on Irish Streams
21:00 Noonward Race - Hudba
A totally original once in a lifetime band that blended the virtuosity of jazz soloing with the intensity of hard rock all while playing South Indian and North Indian rhythmic patterns. There was never a band with the instrumental ability to blend all these influences and yet be relatable to someone steeped in the rock music of their era. It brings back wonderful memories.
*John Mclaughlin will always be an inspiration to players who appreciates real music!*
No chord wasted, no sound out of place, pure soul and significance. They appeared, bloomed and gone away, like the beautiful flowers in their season.
Quite possibly the greatest band ever. I was living in Manor House in Austin back in '73 and somebody had the Birds Of Fire album in the little room leading to the upstairs porch. We would put Birds on and start passing a joint and a quart of Old Milwaukee around and....... ah the good old days.
+Joe Logger agree completely. Weather Report is the closest one for me but they do not have a Birds of Fire. And by the way what a year that was.. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Tubular Bells, Houses of the Holy, Dark Side of the Moon, Catch a Fire, Al Green's Call Me, Overnite Sensation.. all stellar albums.
They are - The Greatest Band That Ever Was!!!!!
@@Abhishek-pb6rv Selling England By The Pound alone would worth 1973 for the human kind.
This is the first incarnation of my favourite band of all time--fantastic!
Nobody held time like Billy.
I saw the Manavishnu orchestra, Santana, and Weather report at the Cleveland Colosium a LONG time ago :D. But I was there! :D And guess what, I am still alive!
This is so good it is cruel. These guys are beyond brilliant.
Very well said.
All I can say was that was completely amazing , every one of them is a master at their instruments
I saw this band. Nothing on the scene like this in a while.
Killer band, kicked off an entire explosion in fusion for me, opened the door for Jazz in general too.
I remember seeing this gig in black and white on BBC2 as a 15 year old novice guitar picker. Blown away is an understatement. Two days later I grabbed a ticket to see them live, the gig ran over by an hour and I missed the last bus home. I walked the ten miles home in torrential rain but I didn't care. Great days and it set me on a lifetime of music. They were a monstrous live act on this tour. Thanks for posting.
What a great memory and story: I saw them live and was astounded too, but fortunately never had to work that hard to get home!
Great story !
I saw them on this tour in '72 at Palo Verde High School auditorium in Tucson. It was at once incomprehensible and illuminating. I was just 17 and a striving guitar player. Who knew all this could even be conceived let alone played at this level.
Epic.
All of these bands members were super super musicians, finding and placing together these musicians was not a stroke of luck but an overt act of brilliance as heard by those that love them!
My number one band.listening to Birds of fire and Inner mountain flame over many years and still seem to find things ive not noticed before.Five absolute Maestros.Never got to see them live, didnt hear them untill the late 70s.......bummer.....
Among the most amazing experiences of my life was to hear this sound.
Cobham is a beast!
damn!
In their IMF show I attended (1972) , he, at one point in playing, made the sticks disappear.
I think .the drummer in Rush. forgot the name--have had 2 many beer.
I remember. The speed of light couldn't catch up to him !@@scribe21121
@@jimdep6542 Absolutely! Something divine about him and his big kit, often slightly elevated up there, center-stage. Mesmerizing! Another concert sticks in my mind, but he was drumming with Blue Oyster Cult. MO wasn't on that bill, but MO and BOC toured together in the '70s. Maybe he was filing in for absent Bouchard. [It wasn't MO that night; I'd have recognized John (McL) even in my rarified state of mind that evening. Lol. And here, decades later, I'm pals with Tony Grey, John's nephew, and world-class bassist. Go figure. :)]
Amazing. What an incredible version of “Lotus on Irish Streams”.
Thank you for posting.
Still mind blowing when you consider that, other than intros and outros, most of their stuff was Improv!!!!! And it was Magic!
the very artistic jazz music . the most talented musicians Mahavishnu Orchestra , thank you John Mclaughlin
I saw them live in Brisbane in 1974 , and it was a great Concert .
Fifty years have passed and this music is still stirring and original. Cobham and McLaughlin are, imo, the GOATs on their instruments.
Talk of 'GOAT' is for children. To me, they are undeniable greats - but there are other guitarists and drummers I could name who do it differently - not better or worse - and who are also greats.
Music was SO COOL in the 1970's, then ...it stopped !!??
In 1972-73 my life revolved around the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I met Billy Cobham and asked him if i could sit behind him in concert. It was a surreal experience.
Saw this group in 1972 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago... They were extremely impressive to say the least. I preferred the quieter acoustic things personally, but my god, how technically brilliant they were!
Calling all spirits. Welcome... Behold the Mahavishinu Orchestra
God inspired ........His gifts put to use and so beautiful.
Thank you - mind expanding, relaxing, gorgeous, wonderful, amazingly gr8ful
1987 Montreal Jazz Fest...I had been waiting a long time to see my favorite drummer. Me and a buddy took a train from London, and we stayed a fabulous 10 day's and night's in the most beautiful city. Saw a lot of outstanding jazz performers during that week and a half, but sitting front row at the Spectrum, and seeing Billy Cobham, and his tight band, was the highlight of that year's festival for me.
I saw Cobham do a drum clinic in Ann Arbor around 1985. I had no idea then, or even now, how amazing he really is. This is great, thanks for the upload.
They were on another level......Know one has been back here since. Just amazing live.
I seen them 5 time live. Music for the Universe.
After seeing they whole show. I forgot how frigging amazing Cobham is. A drummers, drummer.
Listening for the first time Birds of Fire was really an enlightned experience. A new sonic world open
I sent this video to Jeff Beck in 1999 before you could watch it on CZcams: he freaked out,and has since been including Mahavishnu tunes in his sets since.
Hare Krishna; the ability of mankind. No need to compare, great is great
Powerful statement. Hare Krishna indeed.
Dang, such clear video (film?), good recording quality, and the band seems so focused. At their peak, thanks for posting this.
i saw this band-UNH (New Hampshire USA)with Blue Oyster Cult; and the Clarence White era Byrds winter 1972-"Inner Mounting Flame" had yet to be released-Miles Davis told McLaughlin he needed to do his own band-and boy did he ever-i relished every second of this-
SUPER group ! .. the best of the best
Back again - far out. This is too sweet
The comic timing at 20:32 is still immaculate
Thanks for the memory of this superb band--Lotus on an Irish stream was part of my Wedding music
Goodman doesn't get enough credit. Saw them live in 72 and they were just flat out sick.
people call this music pretentious. I call it real. Not some musician trying to make a pop record so he can sell more records. Real musicians play from their soul and they dont give a shit how many records they sell. Funny thing is when you play from your heart people are drawn to it. Not some phony bullshit
jealous people.
331paradiddle who calls it pretentious..? I suspect they weren't there to witness this firsthand, I was.
Yea dude.... Brilliant theory .. thats totally what drives records sales... i mean just look at Justin Beiber... totally KILLIN it .... king of soul.
331paradiddle great comment.
Only one person ever called it pretentious to me, and he was as pretentious an idiot as I've ever met.
I was there. Still one of my favorite pieces of The Mahavishnu Orchestra, and I especially have always loved Jerry and Billy... even all these years -- no, DECADES -- later (sigh).
I miss my hair which I used to swing around in the air while at their concerts. Now I just circle my head around. Those my age know where that comes from and what it means.
It's needed now! I couldn't believe this and other film of this line up even existed! I think it was about 10yrs ago I first seen and heard this! I've been into this band since I started drumming 30yrs ago. I only got one friend into Mahavishnu, all the others....the same laimo response "duh.what are they doing and what's with the violin and keyboards!?" Back in the 80's my friends were into metal more than me and they listened 2 hard core Wich made fun of everything under the sun except themselves! Ironically 2day speedmetal is closed 2 what Mahavishnu was about than some fusion
Oops! Close to is what I meant not closed
The blessed double-neck guitar of a master !
Billy The Best !
What a fucking drummer!!!
Piano solo in Irish Streams is awesome !
we were teenagers and musicians to boot!
ALWAYS GREAT
Always a favourite show , among so many others ! :)
Thank you for posting it. We are grateful.
God bless you, John !
I got this record in 1973. Schok for me. From deep space...
Gosh they were amazing.
Saw Jon Luc Ponte in concert too! :D
And I Like it. AMAZING It is Really. Thank Yoy Friend i learn englsh THANK about word AMASING
Excellent !....Gratitude... AUM
This is music, but there are many kinds of music. John plays fast and good but there are many guitar players playin well, music must come from the heart and soul, if you like it or not is not important!
AH !
I saw them in Charlotte when they toured for Birds of Fire. Unfortunately for the Allman Brothers Band they had to go on after them.
Great video and sound quality.
It's amazing to think Billy Cobham just started with double bass drums at this time. Didn't take him long to get comfortable with them.
GOOD MASTER WORKS
thanks for uploading and greetings from tasmania
Just.. Woooow!!!
Geniales Spiel von Jan Hammer bei "You Know, You Know". Da das E-Piano Störgeräusche von sich gibt, wechselt er zum Minimoog und improvisiert. Wahrscheinlich das einzige Konzert, in dem er hier seinen Part mit dem Synthesizer spielt.
Phenomenon
Tremendo grupo musical
cobham has a good time with mclaughlin at the beginning of "noonward race"
Love that drum kit it, was perfect for that stuff at the time, I think. I would trade all my stuff for a large acrylic kit.
I always wondered what became of Brian..he joined the Mahavishnu Orchestra ! Come on Brian ..cheer up..
reminds of Page w/ the SG double neck
Guthrie was a violinist in his past life.
If you don't like Mahavishnu, I don't like you.
but you can still love everybody
Golf, and Lager/ Hobart
dang,man!
I wonder how people reacted to this Orchestra...I was too young.
That was one @#$% of a Jerry Goodman solo on "You Know..."
2:50 Jan his electric piano isn't grounded and he shifts to the moog that's my guess.... I never knew why he was looking around and looking pissed till I finally after 30 years since I got the video tape bootleg did I ever hear it in the headphones... I was like AHHH that's what it is .... However this 30 min performance is amazingly outrageous ... I mean like beyond the beyond ...
Goodman at 24:00 isn't that guy anazing.
Agreed: I love his solos; a sublime player, on fire and still making perfect melodic sense and in time!
Did someone ever know the accoustic guitar used in "Lotus on Irish Streams"?
An Ovation.
Holly Music; Fusion Jazz.
I love John, I am blessed to have seen him twice in my life. Mahivishnu Orchestra and Shakti are in regular rotation in my daily routines. But can someone tell me what kind of accent he has? It's not exactly English but not Indian either.
He's from England.
His mom was Scottish I believe. So it's kind of a Scottish/ English hybred. These days, it's got a bit of Parisian as well given how long he has resided there.
He always spoke very calm, gentle, respectfull and kept low voice with the audience. Remarkable moment when he asked the crowd somewhere for silence before start playing, and promptly attended, you could hear a fly land in the ground.
Škvorecký's Jan Hammer Band ever record?
💻💻💻💻
These guys are awesome musicians. Mind blowing stuff. McLaughlin seems to be a bit awkward talking to the audience lol
I saw them live in 1974 , I'll never forget the amazing experience .
Uncle John is a quiet, unassuming person.
12:37 Jesus Christ.
Mahavishnu Orchestra Live 1972 and 1973 was John at his best. His albums were weak. The album with Santana was great though! Saw them plenty of times.
Weak ?
I find it odd that the such undeniably superb talents of Jan et al and the tuning is all over the place. Is it me or did anyone else(musicians)notice that too? Note around 4:00 and after when Jan fires up the Mini Moog. It is horrible intonation, or lack thereof...and please, I am not knocking John Mclaughlin, not in the least so please don't jump all over me, just wanted to note that and if you hear it too, otherwise maybe I need to hang up my ice skates.
I allways find McLaughlin's acoustic sound so dirty. It sounds like if he wasn't pressing the strings enough. It's such a turn off to me.
