I think this was a Honda promotional VHS video tape sent to Honda motorcycle dealers back in 1986. One day back then I walked into my local Honda motorcycle dealer and one of the salesmen who knew me excitedly told me to come with him to the video tape player and watch this awesome video he was dying to show me. Seeing it here is just as I remember it.
Freddie was my racing hero ,I bought the helmet, and many other Spencer goodies.As I am Australian I am loyal to my own ,but Freddie was my first and actually probably the best I have even bought the 25th Anniversary Helmet- Mr Cool King Freddie#1.
Nothing like the stroker era of GP motorcycle racing! Those things were evil fast! In the 70's, a guy in the US put an OW31 on the road!! I still have the Cycle World mag that wrote about it!
Spencer's resume and racing career speaks for itself. His legendary status is unquestionable. His 500/250 Championship record, IMO, will never be broken. I think Kenny Roberts might disagree with the nice guy status but that is another story.
I raced against him in 1977 at Charlotte. All I knew was he was some kid from Louisiana that had 7 race bikes. His dad tuned them all and he won six races that weekend. Next time I saw him he was riding for Honda at Daytona and the rest is history.

Not too long ago I heard an explanation for carpal tunnell syndrome that seems to fit, at least for me. It is a psychological condition, where someone has an intense fear that they cannot hold onto something very important to them, as a result the tendons grow and increase in width, and can eventually cause this condition. If this was the case for Freddie then perhaps it was the fear of loosing his title that led to the end of his career. Perhaps...whatever the cause we lost a genius.
The 1984 NSR500 Freddie's riding was not a very successful design. Its low-mounted fuel tank compromised handling, and the idea was abandoned in future NSR500 models.

Yeah Freddie was the man back in the early to mid 80's. Shame injury cut his career short or he would have won at least 1 more 500cc title.
