There’s nothing quite like throwing a surfboard in the back of a Holden Sandman and hitting the Great Ocean Road. Dave Strong has a deep-seated connection with the iconic panel van, hunting down original examples and owning several models over the years. As Dave sees it, the Sandman is a quintessential 1970s Australian surf culture vehicle and ultimate freedom machine.

Sweet. Brings back my childhood in the 70s.

I owned an HZ Sandman, same colour as this one, but no side windows. Plus I had the Twin headlights, and the Statesman badge on the nose. Bubble window at the back, Coffin Rack on top, tramp rods, and the exhaust dropped down behind the mud flaps pointing at the road. Made it better for driving with the back opened as fumes did not come in. 5 litre V8 and 4 speed, with Bridgestone 245's x 16 x 55. Had Carpet on the sides, and an 8 inch thick foam mattress to make it nice and snug when sleeping in the back. A great versatile car that went well and looked great. Always turned heads when driving it.

That was so good to see and hear, I am an old surfer, but missed having a Sandman, I had a 73 HQ GTS instead, Deep Purple, Black Interior, 308 V8 no air con of course, and a Valiant Charger before that, both had the boards on the roof, but the Sandman was the one to have, wish I could find one now.

My brother in law had a brand new one in the pretty blue/aqua, it had the mad barky exhuast 4spd and i got to drive it a couple of times. I had an XB falcon 200 as my first car and thought the sandman was a race car. It sounded great, was relatively slow but i thought fast at time, drank fuel like a B52 bomber and as a Ford lover, i would kill for one. Thanks for Video guys.

That was great, very, very nice van and thanks heaps or the post. Thanks a lot for the post hast has bought back so many memories. I remember the Sandman with great affection. Because of it's success it created the Valiant Drifter and Falcon Sundowner to try and compete. I think they did okay from memory but neither of them got close to the Sandman in sales. A golden time in history when life was simple. "don't knock your daughter might be inside" stickers sold up a storm LOL.

Excellent vid. Beautifull van. My hj van is 6 cyl bench seat. Hearing your v8 is musical torture. I would love to put in an 8 and duals for the music and buckets for the comfort. Something tells me i should leave her original. After all we have had her since new. Just gorgeous. .

If only we had these in the States. There would probably be a good market for sedan-chassis pickups and panel vans here too, but nobody’s making them

The closest thing to a sandman my uncle owned was a hx panelvan i think. When my mom was a teenager the only Holden her mother owned was a sedan hj or hx. Currently im 19yrs old a
Almost 20 in 2020 the closest thing I got is a HQ one tonner
