  • How to Wet Form a Leather Sheath with Vacuum Sealer
Here I show you how to wet form a leather sheath. My secret to getting a good fit is using a vacuum sealer and treating my leather with Sno Seal.

I just clicked on this video because I was searching for a better method for wet, forming my knives and you and me literally do the exact same method so I think I’m going to not change anything and continue to do what I’ve always done vacuum ceiling is a game changer

I did this same thing a few years ago! It was a brand new sheath that I had just finished making for a client... to avoid getting the textured part on either side, I bought a sheet of thin craft foam (the type people use for colorful cutouts, etc) and sandwiched it between the textured vacuum bag and the leather - it worked perfectly! Thank you for taking the time to make this excellent video to share this trick.

Some good tips in this video, particularly about being careful not to use the textured side of the vacuum seal bag against the top grain of the leather. One bit that I don't really understand is why everyone takes such great pains to keep the knife dry. I have a number of very nice knives, high-end handmade knives. I actually use them in the field, a lot. I get them wet all the time. If I had a knife that couldn't survive being wet for 15 minutes I would not be making a custom formed leather sheath for it... I would throw it away. I would be far more careful about making sure that the sheath was 100% dry before I stored a knife in it.

I use this method too. But today I screwed up and got the textured side on the top of the sheath. Looks funny. But doesn’t matter, it’s for my daily user. Thanks for the video, needed to check what time others use before taking it out of the bag.

Brilliant, I enjoy making my own leather conditioner. You seem like someone who might enjoy doing the same. I challenge you to give it a try. I use bees wax, sweet almond oil, shea butter and sonetimes coconut oil.

It is so funny you say that. I’m actually working on a fix n wax video (not my recipe) but I do have permission so I have something to treat my high carbon knives and sheaths in the field. I do alter the recipe a little to make it a little more diverse. But the big thing is I have my own way to apply it (kind of a twist). So you will have to stay tuned. I have 4 videos on the computer that need edited and I’m just starting to shoot this one so probably be 2-3 weeks. I like snow seal for boots and other stuff like that, but I don’t believe it’s food grade with what they put in it. This will be an all natural, food grade treatment, easy to carry, and apply. I really appreciate your feedback. It’s comments like urs that keeps me going. And thanks for watching, blessings the ocd Hunter.
